DESCRIPTION

The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals® is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that works with more than 150 partner rescue groups and shelters to offer important programs and services that save the lives of NYC’s homeless animals. We are supported entirely by donations from foundations, corporations, and individuals and receive no government funding. Since our founding in 2003, we have remained committed to transforming New York City into a no-kill community by 2015, meaning that no dogs or cats of reasonable health and temperament will be killed merely because they do not have homes. www.AnimalAllianceNYC.org

In 2013, high-profile, multi-group adoption events continued to be one of our most effective tools for finding homes for NYC’s homeless animals, as demonstrated by our success during Maddie’s® Pet Adoption Days. More than 3,000 dogs and cats from 70 NYC-area rescue groups and shelters found new homes during the two-day, citywide, free adoption extravaganza sponsored by Maddie’s Fund. Two large, outdoor mega adoption events in Manhattan, presented with support from the Petco Foundation, provided a visible focus for the citywide activity. Collectively, the organizations that participated in the event garnered more than $3 million in adoption subsidies from Maddie’s Fund.

Other high-profile Alliance adoption events – Adoptapalooza and Whiskers in Wonderland, presented in partnership with the Petco Foundation, and Broadway Barks, the annual star-studded adoption spectacular, presented by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore, resulted in hundreds more adoptions in 2013.

WHEELS OF HOPE BRINGS THEM HOME

Moving animals out of crowded Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) shelters to partner organizations with the capacity to find new homes for them continues to be our most effective method of saving lives. Through our ongoing partnership with AC&C and its New Hope department, the Alliance Wheels of Hope vans

transported more than 13,700 animals from AC&C to rescue groups and shelters, adopters, foster caretakers, and veterinary clinics in 2013. Seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, our wheels are turning to create brighter futures for more Little New Yorkers.

We intensified our efforts in 2013 to solve the feral cat overpopulation crisis in New York City through the humane, effective method of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

The Feral Cat Initiative of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals continued to engage and support feral cat caretakers throughout the city by providing them with information, assistance, giveaways, and specialized training. Thanks to special grants we acquired from the ASPCA, the Petco Foundation, and a private foundation, we increased funding for TNR in New York City. The funds were used to pay for spay/neuter, traps, cat shelters, training, and other TNR-related expenses.

We continued to speak with New York City Council Members and other community leaders about TNR to help educate them and their constituents about the benefits of TNR to their communities. And we shared our experience and training with communities across the country interested in starting or strengthening their local TNR programs.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTAs we embarked on our second decade

of life-saving initiatives, the Mayor’s Alliance celebrated many achievements in 2013. Our community collaboration of 150 Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) succeeded in saving eight out of every 10 lives at AC&C this year, and more than 250,000 have been saved since 2003. Euthanasia was further reduced in 2013.(See chart to the right.) To read more about our progress, please visit our 2013 Progress Report on our website at AnimalAllianceNYC.org.

Our valued partners and supporters make all of our successes possible by dedicating their time and resources to benefit NYC’s shelter and homeless animals. One such partner – the Alex and Ani and Charity by Design team – recently visited the Alliance. We thanked them for providing critical support to all of our programs, from the key initiatives outlined here, to the Alliance’s Lost & Found and Helping Pets and People in Crisis programs, which work to keep animals safe and at home with their owners, where they belong.

Our shared vision of a NYC where all healthy and treatable dogs and cats receive a loving home is in sight. Thank you for your support this year, and for joining us as we continue on our mission to save precious lives in 2014 and beyond.
