May 30, 2014

Dear Supporters,

2013 was another record-breaking year for the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF) with more animals rescued and adopted than ever before. A total of 1,113 cats and dogs were adopted into loving homes, which is an 8% increase over 2012. This is the second year in a row that we have placed over 1,000 animals which makes ARF one of the largest and most effective shelters on all of Long Island.

Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator, granted ARF a 4-star rating for the second year in a row. ARF is in an elite group with only 19% of the charities in the United States earning 4-stars two years consecutively.

Our long term vision for the organization includes an exciting, major capital project here at the Adoption Center that would allow us to double the number of adoptions, provide Sanctuary housing for hard to adopt cats and dogs and build a dog training center where dogs and their handlers could enjoy training classes year-round. We have hired the Bacon Group one of the nation’s leading animal facility architects to help us with these plans.

We are a publicly supported charity and receive support from over 13,500 households, foundations and corporations. We are proud to list most of them in this annual report. We celebrated in August with the Bow Wow Meow Ball held for the first time at the Adoption Center. The lovely Bernadette Peters was our honoree and helped make it the most successful benefit in our history with a total of $500,000 raised!

During the summer of 2013 we also launched the LemonARF program where young people sell lemonade and other treats to benefit the animals at ARF. In its first season, children who participated in LemonARF raised over $5,000!

We at ARF know that your pet is part of your family. There are numerous medical benefits associated with pet ownership. We cannot thank our adopters enough for sharing their testimonials of all the values they reap owning their four-legged friends. Thank you for sharing your letters, emails and photos with us. We love hearing from you! Please be sure to go on our Facebook page and follow ARF’s lively posts and share them with your friends.

All of us at ARF feel fortunate to touch so many lives with the work we do. We want to continue to save lives and enrich yours. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Bow Wow Meow BallARF was proud to present the “Champion of Animals” Award to Bernadette Peters, animal activist and star of stage and screen. Presenter Beth Ostrosky Stern, friend to all animals, MC Dick Cavett and four hundred guests enjoyed the first ever summer gala held at ARF’s 22 acre campus in Wainscott, NY which included a silent auction, cocktails, dinner and dancing the night away with Peter Duchin and the Peter Duchin Orchestra.

20th Annual Stroll to the Sea Dog WalkAlways a must attend event, ARF’s 20th Annual Stroll to the Sea held over Columbus Day weekend was a day to remember. All walkers received a free event t-shirt with artwork by Isaac Mizrahi, inspired by his rescue dog Harry, and in addition to the walk from historic Mulford Farm to East Hampton’s Main Beach and back all involved enjoyed contests with great prizes, a dog agility course, Dreesen’s Donuts, Starbucks Coffee, cider from The Milk Pail as well as silent and chinese auctions.

2014 ARF Pet CalendarNow in its ninth year, the ARF Pet Calendar has raised over $1 million to help us carry out our mission. By purchasing a page in the annual calendar pet lovers are able to share their love for their furry friends, or sponsor that special ARFan who is still looking for a home. For the 2014 Pet Calendar ARF was fortunate enough to have internationally acclaimed artist Malcolm Morley create the striking front and back panels.

2013 EventsLong Island’s Best! Pet Adoption ExposARF took to the Polish Hall in Riverhead, NY for two more Long Island’s Best! Pet Adoption Expo. As the host of 6 other Long Island animal welfare groups, great times were had by all – especially ARF’s adoptable animals, 38 of whom found forever homes from this popular event.

Third Annual Designer ShowhouseThe Third Annual ARF Designer Showhouse and Sale featured internationally acclaimed designer vignettes inspired by and arranged using Thrift Shop donations and the designer’s personal contributions, presenting unequaled sales opportunities. The talented designers were: Elizabeth Dow, James Huniford, Ann Madonia and Susan Madonia, Annie M. Napoliello, Barbara Ostrom and Preston Phillips.

27th Annual Garden TourOne of the longest running garden tours on Long Island, ARF’s 2013 “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” self guided tour included six outstanding gardens in the village of East Hampton & environs as well as a magnificent cocktail party to end the day at the historic home of Mary Jane & Charles Brock in the heart of East Hampton village.

Operation Cat (Op Cat):Founded 16 years ago by Board Member Zoe Kamitses, Op Cat is the only TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) program covering Westhampton Beach to Montauk. In 2013 Op Cat saw 1,210 cats fixed and a 34% reduction in kitten intake from the wild.

People United with Pets (PUP) Program: ARF’s PUP Program provides a safe haven for pets when their owners are in a period of crisis or difficulty due to illness, domestic abuse or the limited means of many seniors. PUP provides veterinary care, boarding or in-home care, food, grooming and/or transportation to those in need.

Humane Education:ARF staff members teach students from pre-school to high school about the basics of animal care and the importance of spay/neuter. Student internships are an excellent way for young people to learn about caring for cats and dogs.

Pet Therapy:Volunteers and ARF staff bring our animals to local daycare centers and nursing homes where a child or senior citizen may enjoy a purring kitten in their lap or an affectionate, playful puppy by their side.

Free Clinics:Each year ARF provides free microchipping, rabies shots and free or low cost spay/neuter services to our local community.

Dog Obedience and Agility Classes:Our extremely popular and affordable dog training classes help strengthen the bond between dog and owner and help prevent people from giving up their dogs because of poor behavior.

Annual Meeting & Pet Celebration Day:Each year ARF holds its Pet Celebration Day & Annual Meeting on the ARF campus. The morning activities include election of board members and annual report to the members followed by lots of fun including contests, treats for animals and humans alike and a chance to greet the ARF alumni who are now enjoying their second chance at life with their new families. In 2013 we were proud to recognize three dedicated volunteers with the Friends of Animals Award: Eunice Bennett, Mina Kahofer and Cathy McHugh.

Emergency Pet Evacuation:ARF is the official Emergency Pet Evacuation Center of the Town of East Hampton.

Volunteers:Volunteers are the lifeblood of ARF. There is nothing these dedicated men and women won’t do to help the animals as they wait for adoption including: walking and socializing dogs, socializing and bottle-feeding young kittens in their home, working at offsite adopt-a-thons and special events, caring for community cat colonies, manning the Thrift & Treasure Shop and so much more. Every year ARF honors its volunteers with a Volunteer Appreciation Party, as well as laud outstanding commitment to the Friends of Animals’ Award at the Pet

Celebration Day and Annual Meeting.

Thrift & Treasure Shop:Open seven days a week in bucolic Sagaponack, the ARF Thrift & Treasure Shop has something for

everyone. All donations including clothing, housewares, furniture or other

gently used items, are tax deductible. 100% of the proceeds earned at the Thrift Shop go directly to benefitting the animals

at the ARF Adoption Center.

ARF thanks all of the generous donors who help keep our kennels and doors open each and every day. Due to space constraints we were not able to list all of their names, but each and every gift, no matter the size, helped us save lives in 2013. Every effort has been made to ensure this list is complete and accurate. If you find any errors or omissions, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will update the listing.
