Dear Goodwill Friends,

In ancient times artisans of all sorts marked their work with an identifying imprint or “character” engraved on every vessel they created, distinguishing their unique product from all others. Their imprint demonstrated the integrity of their work as they could not create a substandard product without others knowing who made it. Their “character” or imprint thus represented the quality of their work, but also their lives. We as individuals leave a mark on everything we do and our mark is only as good as the product we help create.

Every organizational accomplishment of Goodwill Dallas is achieved through a collaborative effort by the many community leaders, donors, educators, shoppers and volunteers who choose to positively influence humanity through great gifts of time, financial contribution and undying commitment thus leaving their distinct mark or fingerprint on our organization and the thousands of individuals served through our programs and services.

As stewards of the organization, every action we take, every initiative we propose and every dollar we raise is carefully considered from a mission oriented focus, executed with fiscal responsibility and maintained through measurable outcomes.

We owe it to those we serve and our stakeholders to be held to high standards. For the last 89 years Goodwill Dallas, has exceeded expectations, sending a strong message to the philanthropic community that our mission is worthy of private investment. This will continue to be our undertaking well into the future.

And that’s why it’s not us; it’s you. We have a story to tell, but so do you. It is with the dedication, commitment and unique fingerprint left by every member of the “Goodwill family” that our mission becomes a reality.

Our Donated Goods operation kicked off 2013 with the opening of the very first stand-alone Valet Donation Center (VDC). In January, a VDC was opened in Plano, TX at the corner of 15th & Independence. This new venture is a direct outcome of sustainability, driven by the Mission Advancement Campaign. A Computer Parts Store was added to the interior, allowing tech-savvy shoppers access to refurbished computer parts and creating more jobs within the community. This endeavor is the first of many to come for Goodwill Dallas.

Michele and Jack Lafield generously donated a significant $100,000 gift to fund computer hardware and software upgrades for Goodwill Dallas’ youth and adult education programs. Michele and Jack Lafield’s contribution offers students an innovative, educational tool to increase levels of competency and critical thinking through hands-on, personalized instruction helping to better prepare students for future success.

We restructured our resource development infrastructure, launching a mission-centric philanthropy department solely focused on increasing public awareness and building philanthropic support to enhance the organization’s education, job placement services and training programs.

Every individual served by Goodwill Dallas has a unique story; a unique life circumstance. And, so does every donor motivating them to do good.

--- Rodney Ginther, President & CEO

“We have been fortunate to acquire tremendous support from individuals who play a vital role in the impact our organization can make. Our donors, stakeholders, volunteer leaders and community partners have allowed us to imprint the lives of those we serve. It is because of you we are able to take on a new venture enabling us to raise funds in support of our mission and service programs.”

FUN FACT: No two fingerprints are the same - they are TOTALLY UNIQUE. There’s a one in 64 billion chance that a fingerprint will match up exactly with another -- Just as no two experiences with Goodwill Dallas are exactly alike!

THE EMPL YEE

“Goodwill is a good place to work. They work with you, for you and will train you to help you perform. --- I wake up every morning and give glory, honor and praise to the Lord, for he has blessed me with the ability to wake up, come to work and to have this job!”

Involved in an automobile accident at the age of 5, Chris was left fatherless, with brain damage and in a coma for 6 months. Forced to relearn everything he knew, Chris was aware at a young age that college was not an option for him. Attempting to work for countless employers that were unwilling to consider his disability and the limitations it

brings, Chris finally found Goodwill Dallas and has held his job for over 10 years. Chris knows he is limited by his disability, but he doesn’t let it slow him down. He is extremely gracious and thankful for the chance he has been given to be employed.

THE STUDENT

“The help that a person who is disadvantaged can get here is life changing; and I am so thankful that I was able to come to Goodwill.”

Born in Africa, Emmanuel contracted polio at the age of 2, leaving him with a physical disability. Upon entering the United States as an adult he sought out an education, landing him at Goodwill Dallas.

“I came to Goodwill because I wanted to get my GED and you offered the classes at no cost. I am enjoying

my geometry class and think my strengths are in math because I love it so much.”

“I want people to know that when they are investing their money in Goodwill they are not only offering me an education, but they are investing their money in people who have a disability, like me.”

Emmanuel Zihove, Adult GED Student

*Funding in its entirety is not guaranteed year to year.

We continue to meet and exceed organizational standards, receiving over 90% of the Scored Standards for Goodwill Industries International’s (GII) certification. The review consisted of a study of organizational documents, a tour of the Goodwill Dallas headquarters and classrooms, two retail stores, two Job Connection Centers and interviews with key staff members and program participants.

We are proud recipients of an estimated $2,431,317* in grant allocations over a three-year period from the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas’ Community Impact Grant. Goodwill Dallas was selected as a service provider to assist in the effort to achieve United Way’s 2020 goals, focusing on the most exceptional programs in Education, Income and Health ---- Preparing at least 60% of all students to graduate and succeed, moving 250,000 people out of poverty and improving community health across the Metroplex.

ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program Intern, Nicole Stevens put in countless hours archiving Goodwill Dallas’ history dating back to our start, 1924. She found a room full of photos, audio and video tapes, plaques, newspaper articles, reports and many other items collected over an 89-year period with no system, method or any other form of organization. Nicole left us with an official archive room – clean, shielded from natural light, equipped with neatly aligned storage racks to house well-preserved items by category and year.

Employees of the organization appear to be well qualified, dedicated to the success of and committed to the mission of the organization to provide needed services to the community.”

In April, we became home to the only Certified Work Incentives Counselor (CWIC) in the greater Dallas area. Financial Coach, Willie Matlock, is able to effectively integrate work incentive counseling services into federal, state and local employment programs, conduct outreach to individuals and community stake holders, assist individuals in understanding their benefits and deliver integrated services that are sensitive to individual needs.

PUTTING PEOPLE TO WORK IN OUR COMMUNITY --- On August 28, 104 individuals attended our first job fair with 11 employers looking to hire. 33 job offers were extended as a result.

Selected as one of 22 Goodwills nationally and the only in the state of Texas, we are proud recipients of the GoodGuides® mentorship grant from the US Department of Justice, awarding Goodwill Dallas the ability to create an after school mentorship program focusing on at-risk youth 14-17 years of age.

On North Texas Giving Day, we raised $139,055 compared to $1,400 in 2012, ranking Goodwill Dallas #29 for total revenue raised out of 1,351 nonprofits receiving donations in the North Texas community.

On September 10, Goodwill’s National Ad Council PSA Campaign “Donate Stuff. Create Jobs.” officially launched with objectives to increase the donation of goods, encourage engagement with Goodwill within the community and inspire an emotional connection to the mission. PSAs were distributed to more than 33,000 media outlets throughout the country, reaching a donated media value of $11.7 million nationwide, and $97,115 the DFW area.

On July 26, Bill HR 1305 honored Goodwill Dallas’ commitment to our community as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site during the 2013 tax season, completing 214 returns totaling $341,728 in earned income tax credit returns. Introduced to drugs and incarcerated at a young age, Pam had no job skills to prepare her for employment. Fresh out of the penitentiary and living in a half-way house, she was given a few dollars, told to catch the bus and go find a job. When the bus driver asked her where she wanted to go Pam replied, “I don’t know. You have any suggestions?” The bus driver recommended Goodwill Dallas, dropped her off and she has been here ever since. Pam has been employed with

Goodwill Dallas for 12 years. “I’ve never had another job. Goodwill is designed for someone who is disadvantaged like me. I’ve been to prison, I have health issues, and they have given me the opportunity to provide for myself. I started out at the bottom and in two years worked my way up to supervisor.” She says the job skills she has received and the friendliness from every person within the organization has kept her here.

Give a GIFT. Create an OPPORTUNITY. Provide a JOB. Change a LIFE.

“I’ve been through all walks of life. Goodwill has given me the opportunity to start my life over; to improve my quality of life. They are my family.”

YOU make an IMPACT.

Paul Brown, Textile Returns Laborer & Extended Work Adjustment Training (EWAT) client

Born with an intellectual disability, Rose Brown knew her son Paul would lead a different life than most. “I wanted to give Paul a better life, and for him to understand that he is important. I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that is as unique as the individual.” Paul has been an employee of Goodwill Dallas for almost 25 years.

“I am so glad I chose Goodwill for Paul; this is the only job he has ever had. I find peace of mind in knowing he is

in a safe, friendly environment and with people willing to work with him and support him to better his skills. I don’t know what I would do without Goodwill. They have been an anchor for Paul and I, especially after the loss of my husband years ago.” Rose knows Goodwill Dallas is here to support her and Paul. He loves coming to work and taking home a paycheck.

HOLIDAY SPIRIT IN THE AIR --- Merriment, fellowship and joy filled the air as all those that make Goodwill Dallas a truly unique institution gathered to show gratitude to approximately 500 individuals including clients, staff and volunteers. As a family tradition, our Holiday Luncheon was sponsored by the Hoglund Family with 15 family members in attendance, spanning three generations. Festivities included a holiday feast and entertainment provided by Texas Winds, with beverage and dessert generously donated by Kroger. Special and honored guest, Kirk Franklin, also contributed his musical talents to create a memorable and unforgettable experience for all.

17.

Goodwill International Jumps to #19 in Forbes America’s 25 Most Inspiring Companies compared to last year at #23.

THE DON R

YOU make a difference to Goodwill & the Dallas community.

“We give to leave our mark paving the way for opportunity. ---- While the passage through adolescence and into adult roles is difficult for all youth, it is especially challenging for youth who are at risk of failure in traditional school settings. Every North Texas youth deserves an opportunity for advancement. We believe if given the appropriate tools and resources to succeed every student will flourish.”

Michele & Jack Lafield, Philanthropic Donors

Since joining the Goodwill Dallas Board of Directors in 2013, Jack Lafield and his family have been loyal, active and generous supporters of the organization. After hearing from an instructor during one of Goodwill Dallas’ board meetings, Jack was compelled to invest in a software and

computer upgrade to enhance the students’ educational tool to increase levels of competency and critical thinking through hands-on, personalized instruction. We are truly grateful to have the Lafield Family’s encouragement to make an impact on our community.

“Volunteering as a part-time receptionist, I am reminded of the power and influence we have to change the lives of others every time someone walks through Goodwill’s doors. I volunteer because I believe in Goodwill’s mission and when something or someone touches your heart as Goodwill Dallas has mine, the impression lasts forever.”

Valerie Lowe, Volunteer

Valerie has been giving her time as an volunteer with Goodwill Dallas for over a year. She chose to volunteer with Goodwill Dallas as a part-time receptionist, allowing her the flexibility she needs to care for her autistic son who is wheelchair bound. Valerie shares, “I enjoy being a part of an organization that offers support for those less

fortunate within our community, for example the Ticket to Work Program, which provides assistance to people with disabilities, like my son.” Valerie is a valued volunteer within the organization; we are thankful for the enthusiasm, support and advocacy she provides to Goodwill Dallas.
