Five-Year Investment Pays Off Sharon Hayes, Executive Director

It’s hard to believe it has been five years since I first stepped

into Saint Saviour’s Center (SSC). SSC’s founders had

poured their hearts and souls into reinventing the old Saint

Saviour’s Mission, making it relevant for today’s community

needs. It was a place for outreach where volunteers could

serve the community, and it it had a lot of potential.

Yet, in 2009 the business of SSC was in a vulnerable state. Donations were

declining, as the national economy was in a downfall. The leadership was in

transition, public awareness about the center was missing, and the property

was showing signs of neglect. There was much work to do before SSC could

truly be successful.

The Board and I took a step-by-step approach to addressing each challenge.

Our process included:

Developing a strategic plan as a roadmap for moving forward.

Designing an organizational structure to focus on key areas, such as

fundraising, communications, programs and property care.

Recruiting volunteers to clean, paint and repair the facilities.

Documenting administrative procedures to manage the organization

more effectively.

Building a support network within the community.

Adding new programs and volunteer opportunities.

Creating a development plan for public awareness and year-round

fundraising activities.

Monitoring the finances and making budget adjustments as needed.

Our efforts paid off. Today, SSC supports programs that feed the hungry,

care for babies, nurture seniors and educate children. Each year, more than

200 volunteers distribute food and diapers, provide administrative assistance,

lead activities and spiritual programs, organize events, and maintain the

property.

The organization now receives financial support and in-kind donations from

individuals, churches, businesses, schools and neighborhoods across Wake

County. In 2013 donations increased, and we ended the year with our income

exceeding expenses for the first time since 2008. The additional funds are

being reinvested in the center and its programs.

I want to offer a big THANK YOU to our Board, committees, volunteers and

donors. Because of your belief in the mission, your tireless energy and your

ongoing support, SSC is now ready for new challenges and continued growth.

Currently the Board, led by Marshall Lamb, is preparing a long-range plan that

will lead us into the next five years. I look forward to exploring new ways of

reaching more even people in the future.

Our Mission Saint Saviour's Center is a community outreach ministry that

provides a home for human service organizations and offers

health, wellness and recreational programs for the elderly and

low-income residents of Raleigh and Wake County.

Our Beliefs As volunteers serving the community, we believe we are called to:

Care for our neighbors in need

From Diapers to Duets: Saint Saviour's

Makes a Difference Dane Huffman, Communications Advisor

Imagine trying to raise a child and being so poor, and desperate for

diapers, that you had to use a grocery bag instead of a diaper for your

daughter.

That’s the situation some people in Raleigh find themselves in, and why

The Diaper Train at Saint Saviour’s, and other programs at Saint

Saviour’s, are so vital to those in need. Programs like The Diaper Train,

Community Music School, Wake Relief and Meals on Wheels have a

home at Saint Saviour’s, which serves as the soil that allows them to

blossom.

Stop by The Diaper Train at any time when customers are coming in

to pick up their diapers, and you can see a great example of how

Saint Saviour’s works.

Diapers are stored and catalogued, and parents and care-givers come in

at specific times to get what they need. Those times when the doors open

can be bustling, with moms and dads arriving with children in their arms

to get diapers and grab a book as well. They are referred by other

agencies in the city and greeted at Saint Saviour’s by the smiles of Allene

Cooley Adams, Cameron Ellerbe and many dedicated volunteers.

Diapers can cost a family $100 a month per child, and so naturally

families in need try to save as much as possible. They sometimes use old

shirts, towels and even grocery bags if necessary.

In 2011 the SSC Board developed a strategic plan that

included capturing measurements for statistical

analysis. After three years of collecting data, here are

some interesting things we’ve learned.

Since 2008 Healthy Living for Seniors has helped

339 seniors navigate the aging process. 40% of

them have participated in the program for two or

more years.

In 2012 The Diaper Train’s distribution increased

Community Impact

Outreach Program Offerings Population People Served Frequency per Person

Healthy Living for Seniors Classes, activities, counseling Older Adults 212 Weekly

The Diaper Train Diapers, wipes, books Babies 1,800 Monthly, or as needed

Wake Relief Emergency groceries Families and individuals 9,591 One-time or bi-monthly, as needed

Meals on Wheels Lunch and fellowship Older Adults 75 Daily (weekdays)

Community Music School Individual and group lessons Youth, K-12 95 Weekly

Outreach programs at Saint Saviour’s Center make a significant impact for people of all ages, races, nationalities and faith backgrounds. These

programs serve low-income residents in our community, or in socio-economic terms, the working poor. Most people who come to SSC for services are

self-sufficient, yet their income isn’t enough to meet all of their needs. Together, programs at Saint Saviour’s Center help more than 10,000 Wake

County residents each year. We are grateful for their gifts to the community, and we are honored to support them in their missions.

The Diaper Train has exploded since its launch in 2011 and expects to

distribute its one millionth diaper in June. The program is full of

amazing examples of people who needed help.

Lynn, a single mother, cares for her four children, three

grandchildren and four of her cousin’s children in addition to working 30 hours a week. The Diaper Train, she said, “helps me so much.”

Faiza and Mohammed came to The Diaper Train through a

resettlement program after coming to Raleigh from Somalia.

Carla has been served by The Diaper Train since 2012. She has

two children, and her 7-year-old remains in diapers because of health issues.

Another program flourishing at Saint Saviour’s is Community

Music School (CMS). The school has served 2,000 people since

beginning in 1994 and has found a home at Saint Saviour’s.

Underprivileged children get superb music lessons once a week for only

$1 each time.

CMS also includes trips to performances and recitals. But the real goal

is to use music to inspire students and build their confidence and self-

esteem. Students who once never thought college was possible are

finding themselves accepted to schools around the state.

“Those skills carry over to the classroom and that carries over to

society,” said Saint Saviour’s executive director Sharon Hayes. “That’s

the outreach part of what they do. What they are doing is helping these

kids truly have a better life for themselves.”

And that’s the point of what Saint Saviour’s does, every day –

empowering people to make a difference in their lives.

by 370% from the previous year. Between 2012

and 2013 distribution increased again by 90%.

Our resident program Wake Relief provided

groceries for 7,000 people in 2011, 8,800 in 2012

and 9,600 in 2013.

In 2011 SSC program volunteers served 9,470

hours. By 2013, volunteerism grew to 14,326

hours — an increase of 51%.*

*SSC programs only. Volunteerism for Wake Relief, Community Music School or Meals on Wheels is tracked separately.

The SSC Program Committee provided oversight

to volunteer programs that keep seniors active.

The seniors participated in Bingo, book club,

walking groups, arts and crafts, knitting and

crochet , men’s breakfast

meetings, trips to the Farmers

Market and seasonal parties.

Our spiritual support team led

Bible studies, offered pastoral

counseling, and held Memorial

and Healing services to help

residents cope with grief, loss

and loneliness.

We appreciate the commitment of those who help

older adults achieve healthier lifestyles.

Programs at Saint Saviour’s Center are in two categories: SSC Programs and Resident Programs. SSC Programs are managed by the Board, staff

and volunteers of Saint Saviour’s Center. They include Healthy Living for Seniors and The Diaper Train. Resident Programs are separate

organizations or programs of larger organizations that reside at SSC. They include Wake Relief, Meals on Wheels, Community Music School and

Haitian Evangelical Community Church. The reports below reflect activities and progress of SSC Programs in 2013.

Volunteers of all ages help The Diaper Train.

Arts and Crafts class brings out creativity.

Financial Report Emily Smith, Treasurer

At the beginning of 2013, the Board of Saint Saviour's Center set a goal of raising all

funds required to operate the center in the year ahead. We planned to end the year

either at break–even or exceeding our budgeted income goals. At the end of 2013,

through increased fundraising efforts and diligent cost containment, we had a net

income of more than $46,000.

Our donor base has expanded with more individuals, corporations, foundations and

congregations providing financial and in-kind resources. Along with this increased

visibility in our community, we are investing in programs, infrastructure and our long-

term strategy so that we can continue the positive momentum in the years ahead.
