2013 President’s Review

As we go to print, the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games have drawn to a close. New South Wales had 31 representatives in the largest ever Australian Olympic Winter Team of 60 athletes. These athletes brought us some inspiring as well as heart stopping moments, but overall, their unbridled joy in competing in their respective events and the camaraderie with their competitors showed us the intangible qualities which sport can bring. They were brave in the execution of their events, gracious in defeat and humble in victory, and in that respect all were “winners”. Finishing the Games with three medals and 15 top 10 results (27 top 16 results) the future looks promising. Congratulations to them all. On 3 May 2013 we were delighted to welcome seventeen Olympians, John Coates AC, President of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce and The Hon. Kate Lundy MP, former Minister for Sport to the presentation of the Official IOC Participatory Pins from the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The presentation took place alongside the AOC’s Annual General Meeting Cocktail Party and provided a wonderful opportunity to publicly recognise these athletes’ wonderful achievements in London. In 2013 the New South Wales Olympic Council (NSWOC) was well represented through a variety of education

projects. The Pierre de Coubertin Academy and Award presentation continues to attract large numbers of nominations with NSW again receiving the largest number of nominations in the country. At the Pierre de Coubertin Academy students were thrilled to interact with and hear from Olympic Champion Matthew Mitcham OAM (Beijing 2008, Diving - Gold Medallist & London 2012, Diving) Nicola Zagame (London 2012, Water Polo – Bronze Medallist), Jo Brigden-Jones (London 2012 –

Canoe/Kayak – Sprint) and Shaun Boyle (Skeleton, Torino 2006) who gave insightful and

inspiring presentations on their respective Olympic journeys. Two NSW Pierre de Coubertin Award recipients – Lily Vidler and Samuel Kete - were selected to attend the International Youth Forum in Lillehammer, Norway during August, as part of the Australian contingent. The NSWOC was delighted to assist with the unveiling of new Olympians to the Illawarra Olympic Tribute Wall and the unveiling of the Tamworth Regional Olympians Honour Wall. These initiatives are testimony to the collective pride we share in the achievements of our Olympians, but also recognise the inspiration they provide to our communities.

I am pleased to advise that the NSWOC is introducing an Athlete Grant Program designed to provide financial assistance for junior sportsmen and women in NSW. The focus of this program is to provide funding for the development of young ‘up and coming’ NSW athletes. Nominations were open to NSW based sportsmen and women, under the age of 18 who are currently competing in sports on the Olympic Program, and we have been delighted with the response rate. The recipients of the 2014 Athlete Grants will be announced at the 2014 Annual General Meeting. Following a General Meeting on Wednesday, 4 December 2013 we were pleased to welcome our member sports and the NSWOC Delegates to an End of Year Function in our new offices on Level 4, Museum of Contemporary Art, 140 George Street, Sydney. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our member sports for their commitment and dedication to their athletes. At the 2013 Annual General Meeting the Order of Merit was awarded by the NSW Olympic Council to Mr Bill (William) Ronald OAM, a deserving member of Australia’s Olympic family. Bill’s contribution to the sport of fencing as an athlete, coach, and official has been an exemplary and is was a great honour to recognise his achievements. Helen Mantellato, Sales Director with the Sydney Convention and Exhibition centre was also selected by the NSW Olympic Council to be awarded an Order of Merit for her most significant contribution to the Australian Olympic Team Appeals and the Olympic Movement in Australia. Helen was presented with the Order of Merit at a special ceremony in front of her colleagues and peers at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday, 31 May. The Annual General Meeting also served as the quadrennial vote for Executive positions on the NSWOC board. We welcomed Caroline Toh (Badminton) and Betty Moore (Athletics), both long serving members of their respective sports. I would like to thank Bob Lawton and Linda McLaren for their service to the NSWOC Executive Board. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the AOC and NSW Sport & Recreation which has enabled so much to be achieved over the past year. In conclusion may I acknowledge the sterling efforts of our Executive Director, James Edwards, and Coordinator, Sarah Burston, in taking the profile of NSWOC to new height s. My sincere thanks are also extended to the Executive, the Olympians Club of NSW and our member sports, who contribute in a voluntary capacity to the work of the NSWOC. We have entered this new Olympiad with optimism, and look forward to working with you to assist our athletes in pursuing their dreams. Helen Brownlee OAM President

2013 Executive Director’s Review

Seasonal change permeated the Olympic Movement in 2013 as we transitioned from the afterglow of the Summer Games in London to the lure of the Winter Games in Sochi. The New South Wales Olympic Council (NSWOC) had the pleasure of working and assisting with a great number of NSW based Olympians and athletes across summer, winter and youth throughout 2013 in what proved to be a very busy and productive year. In January, The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) staged the sixth edition of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) during a record breaking heatwave in Sydney. The NSWOC assisted the AOC in delivering 17 sports for 1,350 athletes from 30 nations at Sydney’s great Olympic sporting facilities – legacies from the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. NSW was represented by 132 athletes and supported by as many officials from our State sports. The festival proved a great success as judged by the attendance and reaction the Australian and International Athletes. Although not in the 2013 calendar year, it is important to acknowledge in this report the outstanding results of the 2014 Australian Olympic Team competing in Sochi. Incredibly, of the sixty strong Team, half were from NSW – and amazing achievement – and their contribution to the Team’s results and camaraderie was significant. Following the Opening Ceremony where Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin lead the Australian Team into the Sochi Olympic Games as the Australian flag bearer, Torah Bright at her third Games showed incredible athleticism competing in three events and achieving an historic Silver Medal in the women’s snowboard half pipe. Following her Gold Medal in Vancouver 2010 in the same event, Torah equalled the medal haul of compatriot Dale Begg-Smith to become Australia’s most successful winter Olympian in history. Teammates Holly Crawford and Jenny Owens competed at their third Games along with Jana Pittman who competed in Bobsleigh in Sochi and in so doing became Australia’s first female athlete to compete at the Olympic Summer and Winter Games following her Olympic career in athletics in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004. Lucy Glanville (Biathlon) made her Olympic debut in Sochi, having previously competed at the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games. A total of 21 athletes from NSW made their Olympic debut in Sochi which is promising for the future of winter sports in NSW and Australia. Under the guidance of John Conde AO, Chairman, the Australian Olympic Team Appeal (NSW) Committee was renewed in 2013. The Committee gathered in October to outline the broad plan for the 2016 Team Appeal. The Team Appeal is planned to launch in August 2014 with the NSW Government, ahead of two major dinners in Sydney (2015 and 2016). These events will be the backbone of the NSW Team Appeal. The Sydney dinners will be supported by regional events with planning underway in the Illawarra and the Hunter regions of NSW. The NSWOC awarded 355 high school students with the Pierre de Coubertin Award in 2013. The Award, which celebrates the Olympic ideals of sportsmanship and fair play is open to all NSW secondary schools who may nominate only one student per year. The NSW Academy and State Presentation Day held on 21 June at Sydney Olympic Park was an outstanding success with strong support from local Olympians. Combined with the AOC’s Olympic Education program including the Aspire School Network, ‘Chat to a Champ’ and ‘Talk with a Champ’, primary and secondary students across NSW are leaning the Olympic Values at an ever increasing rate.

The NSWOC assisted the NSW Olympians Club to renew its purpose and in 2013 to run events for Olympians as their core audience. The NSWOC hosted the NSW Olympians Club meetings and social gatherings the offices of the AOC / NSWOC at Circular Quay. NSWOC is now providing and Athlete Grant program, to young (under 18) up and coming athletes with the first five athletes receiving their grants of $1,000 on the occasion of the NSWOC Annual General Meeting in 2014. The NSWOC’s investment in the Australian Olympic Foundation continued to provide quarterly distributions in 2013, which allowed the NSWOC Executive to allocate $50,000 to the 2016 Team Fund. NSWOC was pleased to support the Illawarra Team Appeal Committee along with the sporting community of Illawarra in recognising their local Olympians in the unique ‘Illawarra Olympic Tribute Wall’. The unveiling of the plaque for our new London 2012 Olympians on 6 June was a great community day in Wollongong. In 2013 the city of Tamworth created a new ‘Tamworth Regional Olympic Honour Wall’ which was unveiled by Helen Brownlee OAM on 2 August. In December 2013 the AOC launched a new initiative of the ‘Australian Olympians Alumni’ which aims to network all Australian Olympians and assist the Olympians Club’s objectives in running social events for Olympians. NSWOC is coordinating efforts for NSW Olympians Club and to assist the Alumni and bring NSW based Olympians together. We are looking forward to progressing events in 2014 and beyond. At the NSWOC Annual General Meeting in March 2013 the Executive Board then welcomed Caroline Toh and Betty Moore, following the quadrennial vote for the NSWOC Executive positions. Bob Lawton and Linda McLaren stepped off the Executive Board after an extended period of service. The NSWOC would like to thank the NSW Government for their continued year by year financial support in providing $45,000 for general operations. This contribution greatly assists the NSWOC to deliver the Olympic programs within NSW. Congratulations to Helen Brownlee OAM who has not only served as the President of NSWOC for more than 20 years, but has also served on the AOC’s Executive Board for the same duration. At the AOC’s meeting in May 2013 Helen was elected as Vice President of the AOC. Congratulations as well to Doug Donoghue AM who stepped down from the AOC’s Executive Board after 20 years of service and was inducted as a Life Member of the AOC. In May 2013 the NSWOC welcomed Sarah Burston in the position of Coordinator. Sarah has been very quick to learn the ropes and improve systems. Sarah has been invaluable to the NSWOC programs and in 2014 is overseeing the transition of many programs into the digital format. We look forward to moving through the Olympic cycle supporting Australian Teams as we approach the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games in August, Lillehammer 2016 Youth Olympic Winter Games and of course the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. 2013 Pierre de Coubertin Awards The Pierre de Coubertin Award is open to all secondary schools in NSW. The take-up in 2013 was outstanding with a total of 355 Award recipients across the state. The State Presentation of the Pierre de Coubertin Awards was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on 21 June 2013 attended by special guest James Chapman, Dual Olympic rower and Silver Medalist in London 2012. One hundred of NSW’s finest students were recognised at this State Award Ceremony. The Pierre de Coubertin Award is granted by the AOC (NSWOC) to senior students who are nominated by their school for displaying excellence in sport and importantly, demonstrating sportsmanship. In conveying this award, the AOC recognises sports people who not only play the game well, but uphold the Olympic virtues of fair play. Students are selected by their schools and are often role models for students in their own right. Having spent a full day with them, the NSW Olympic Council was very impressed by the exceptionally high calibre of students who are nominated for this award. An outstanding group of Australian Olympians joined the Academy to impart their knowledge to the students. Olympic Champion Matthew Mitcham OAM (Beijing 2008, Diving - Gold Medallist & London 2012, Diving), Nicola Zagame (London 2012, Water Polo – Bronze Medallist), Jo Brigden-Jones (London 2012 – Canoe/Kayak – Sprint) and Shaun Boyle (Skeleton, Torino 2006). Olympians provided an interactive presentation, captivating the students with an emotional insight into their Olympic journey and experiences, describing the highs and lows of life as an athlete they provided guidance into setting goals, striving for excellence and facing challenges.

Olympians Club of NSW: President’s Review 2013

2013 has been a busy year for the Olympians Club of NSW. Our first event was a Harbour Cruise Dinner in April on the spectacular glass walled ‘Bella Vista’. 140 guests were entertained by special guests, Gold Medal sailor from London Malcolm Page and future Winter Olympic Skeleton representative John Farrow. Election of officers for the next 4 year term was conducted in May with the following results: Peter Hadfield – President, Warren Parr – Secretary, Ian Brown – Treasurer and a Committee of Amy Hetzel, Hannah Campbell-Pegg, Jeremy Rolleston, Jo Carter, Alex Croak, Barclay Wade, Dean Lukin, Manoel Santos, Russ Phegan, Mark Tonelli, and Rick Timperi. The power of personal contact was seen by the Committee as a means of maximising the engagement of Olympians. As such an Olympians Club Ambassadors program was created where representatives from the majority of disciplines within the Olympic umbrella were appointed so that they could make direct contact with team mates and Olympians from their sport. The Ambassadors are already having a positive impact on engagement and I thank them for their support. The focus of the Committee is to create a program which is relevant to our members – NSW Olympians. A survey was conducted with all Olympians in NSW to gain feedback so that the committee could formulate a future direction for the club. In February 2014, we conducted a Twilight Sail on Sydney Harbour. The competitive spirit of our Olympians came to the fore on what was a picture perfect evening on the harbour. The sailing was followed by a cocktail party at the Australian Maritime Museum. Many thanks must go to Matt Hayes, Olympic Sailor and CEO of Sydney by Sail for arranging and supporting the event. I encourage all NSW Olympians to spread the word on upcoming events. We are working in collaboration with the AOC and suggest that Olympians also join the Australian Olympians group on LinkedIn. I would like to thank the Olympians Club Executive members for the significant contribution they have made to the success of the Club and the events conducted this year. Sincere thanks to the AOC and the NSW Olympic Council for their on-going support of the Olympians Club and a special thanks to James Edwards and Sarah Burston for their active involvement. Peter Hadfield OAM President Olympians Club NSW

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2013 (1) CORPORATE INFORMATION

The financial report of the New South Wales Olympic Council Inc. (‘NSWOC’ or ‘Council’) for the year ended 31 December 2013 was authorised for issue in accordance with a resolution of the Executive Board on 5 March 2014. The NSWOC is an Association incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act, 2009 of New South Wales and is domiciled in New South Wales. The principal place of business is Suite 402, Level 4, 140 George Street, Sydney, NSW, 2000. The nature of the operations and principal activities of the Council are that the NSWOC acts to develop and protect the Olympic movement in the state of the New South Wales in accordance with the Olympic Charter and the Constitution of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. and to actively promote the fundamental principles of Olympism within the framework of sports.

(2) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The significant policies which have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are: (a) Basis of preparation

This special purpose financial report has been prepared for distribution to the members to fulfil the committee of management’s (“Executive Board”) financial reporting requirements under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009 of the New South Wales and the Council’s constitution. The accounting policies used in the preparation of this financial report, as described below, are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 2009 of New South Wales and the Council’s constitution, and are, in the opinion of the Executive Board, appropriate to meet the needs of members: (i) The financial report has been prepared on an accrual basis of accounting including the historical cost

convention and the going concern assumption. (ii) The Council is not a reporting entity because in the opinion of the Executive there are unlikely to exist

users of the financial report who are unable to command the preparation of reports tailored so as to satisfy specifically all of their information needs.

The members neither hold equity in, nor are financial lenders to, the Council and their membership is pursuant to the Olympic Charter as well as the Constitution. Accordingly, the financial report has been prepared in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act 2009 of New South Wales and the Council’s constitution, the basis of accounting specified by all Accounting Standards and Interpretations and the disclosure requirements of AASB 101 ‘Presentation of Financial Statements’, AASB 107 ‘Cash Flow Statements’, AASB 108 ‘Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors’, AASB 1031 ‘Materiality’ and AASB 1048 ‘Interpretation and Application of Standards’ which apply to all entities required to prepare financial reports under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009 of the New South Wales and the Constitution.

27

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2013

(a) Basis of preparation con’t

The Executive have determined that in order for the financial report to give a true and fair view of the Council’s performance, cash flows and financial position, the requirements of Australian Accounting Standards and other financial reporting requirements in Australia relating to the measurement of assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and equity should be complied with.

(iii) The financial report is prepared in Australian dollars.

(b) Statement of compliance Certain Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations have recently been issued or amended but are not yet effective and have not been adopted by the council for the annual reporting period ended 31 December 2013. The Executive have not early adopted any of these new or amended standards or interpretations. The Executive have not yet fully assessed the impact of these new or amended standards (to the extent relevant to the Council) and interpretations. This special purpose financial report complies with Australian Accounting Standards as described above.

(c) Income and expenditure recognition

Income, with the exception of fundraising, has been brought to account on an accrual basis and if not received at balance date is reflected in the statement of financial position as a receivable. Expenses have been brought to account as incurred and any expenses incurred but not paid for at balance date are reflected in the statement of financial position as creditors.

(d) Government grants Government grants are recognised at their fair value where there is a reasonable assurance that the grant will be received and all attaching conditions have been complied with.

(e) Fundraising

The NSWOC undertakes fundraising on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc (‘AOC’) and, as a result, all net fundraising revenue realised by the NSWOC is recorded directly in the financial statements of the AOC. At 31 December 2013, the NSWOC had realised $33,076 for the 2013 – 2016 Olympic Team Appeal (2012: realised $2,010,935 for the 2009 – 2012 Olympic Team Appeal) Net fundraising revenue is proceeds of fundraising less direct costs associated with fundraising.

(f) Income Tax

The NSWOC is exempt from Australian income tax.

28

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2013

(g) Cash and cash equivalents

The NSWOC undertakes fundraising on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. (‘AOC’) and, as a result all of the funds realised by the NSWOC are recorded directly in the financial statements of the AOC. At 31 December 2013 the NSWOC had no bank account and for administrative purposes all cash transactions are processed by the AOC and the net cash position is reflected in a net receivable account at year end (refer Note 5).

(h) Trade and other receivables

Trade receivables, which generally have 30 – 90 day terms, are recognised and carried at original invoice amount less an allowance for any uncollectable amounts. An estimate for doubtful debts is made when collection of the full amount is no longer probable. Bad debts are written off when identified.

(i) Property, plant and equipment

Acquisition Items of property, plant and equipment are recorded at cost or, in the case of donations and sponsorship contributions in kind, at fair value at the time of donation or contribution, less accumulated depreciation and any impairment in value. Depreciation and amortisation Items of plant and equipment are depreciated on a straight line basis over their estimated useful lives ranging from 3 to 40 years from the date of acquisition. Impairment The carrying values of plant and equipment are reviewed for impairment when events or changes in circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable. If any such indication exists and where the carrying values exceed the estimated recoverable amount, the assets are written down to their recoverable amount. The recoverable amount of plant and equipment is the greater of fair value less costs to sell and value in use. Value in use is the depreciated replacement cost of an asset when the future economic benefits of the asset are not primarily dependent on the asset’s ability to generate net cash inflows and where the NSWOC would, if deprived of the asset, replace its remaining future economic benefits. Impairment losses would be recognised in the statement of comprehensive income.

(j) Trade and other payables Expenditure is brought to account on an accruals basis. Any expenses incurred but not paid for at balance date are recorded as payables on the statement of financial position.

(k) Employee benefits and expenses

(i) Wages, salaries, annual leave and long service leave Expenses for wages and salaries, including non-monetary benefits, annual leave and long service leave, are recognised when the wages are paid or payable, benefits are received or leave is accrued and are measured at the rates paid or payable.

(ii) Superannuation

The Council contributes to the AOC group employee superannuation scheme as well as any authorised employee superannuation scheme chosen under choice of super. Contributions on behalf of employees are based on various percentages of gross salaries and are charged against the statement of comprehensive income when due. All employees in the group employee super scheme are entitled to benefits on retirement or permanent disability. Benefits are payable to nominated beneficiaries on death.

(3) SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING JUDGEMENTS, ESTIMATES AND ASSUMPTIONS

In applying the accounting policies the NSWOC evaluates judgements, estimates and assumptions based on experience and other factors, including expectations of future events. All judgements, estimates and assumptions made are believed to be reasonable based on the most current set of circumstances available to the NSWOC. Actual results may differ from the judgements, estimates and assumptions.
