2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Honoring heritage, Building community.

3. Strengthening families to be self-reliant and successful.

• 80% of 20 Vietnamese immigrant parents reported improved communication with their child’s school.

• 90% of 20 Vietnamese immigrant youth in our job training program successfully completed a 60 hour summer work internship.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2013

1. Supporting students to be college- or career-ready.

2. Developing leaders so the Vietnamese community is heard and represented.

4. Engaging with diverse communities to advocate for systems change.

• 81% of the 40 refugee and immigrant students in our after school program increased their grades in at least one core subject.

• 92% of the 150 students in our Saturday English School increased their literacy or math scores by one or more levels.

• Our community-building events, like the Lunar New Celebration and World Café, were attended by more than 600 people. Participants described feeling “hopeful” and “inspired” by the event.

• VFA served as an incubator for advocacy efforts and coalitions such as the Southeast Seattle Education Coalition and Rainier Valley Corps, to fight for social justice and education equity.

• Our youth team and volunteers registered over 300 new Vietnamese voters in King County.

• We trained over 15 youth leaders who organized community-building events that welcomed over 150 people.

Juan Carlos VasquezJuan Carlos Vasquez is a graduate of VFA’s Saturday English School program. Because of the difference it’s made in his life, Juan Carlos now wakes up early every Saturday to volunteer as a tutor in the program. Juan Carlos desires to help other kids have the same experience that has helped him excel academically and move forward with plans to attend college.

RifkaRifka, a survivor of the 2004 tsunami, was born in Sri Lanka in a small town called Hambantota. Every Saturday morning she volunteers at VFA as a member of the Student Leadership Council, where she helps support the Saturday English Program, improves her English skills, and collaborates with her peers on a research project to implement an anti-bullying campaign for recently-arrived students.

Tony VoTony participated in the CARE Project to research, document and assess the needs of the Vietnamese community. Since his involvement with CARE, he has continued to do amazing work in education. Tony recognized that there exist large disparities among Asian-American subgroups and has advocated for the recognition of Southeast Asian communities. He is currently the Asian Student Commission Director for the Associated Students of the University of Washington.
