Dear Friends, 2013 was an exciting year and we are proud to have been able to continue to serve our community in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility - just as we have done for nearly 100 years. We know that it is only with the support of friends like you that we can continue our mission to help all people realize their fullest potential through the development of Spirit, Mind and Body. Thank you!

We strive to meet our mission through direct service, collaborations, and dedication. I hope you’ll take some time to read the inspiring stories in this year’s annual report. They show just how we’re tackling some of southern Arizona’s most important issues. For example, did you know that 53% of Arizona preschoolers are not ready for Kindergarten when they graduate? Or, that 25% of adults and 17% of children in Arizona are obese? Read on to see how your support is helping us put an end to these staggering statistics.

Another area where we are making great strides is with our Diabetes Prevention Program. In 2013 the Y was awarded a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation grant that has allowed us to offer the ground-breaking program to Medicare participants for free. The program has a proven track record showing that participants with prediabetes can prevent or delay new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58% overall and by as much as 71% in adults over the age of 60.

These are just a few examples of the great work the Y is doing in Southern Arizona. For more information, please visit TucsonYMCA.org.

Yours in service,

OUR MISSIONThe YMCA of Southern Arizona is dedicated to improving the quality of human life and to helping all people realize their fullest potential through the development of Spirit, Mind and Body.

Our preschool, school age, and summer camp programs prepare children for success in school. No matter their age, children are encouraged to explore their world in a safe, nurturing environment. From inside our classrooms to our play areas and beyond, we foster a love of learning and prepare each child to be ready for Kindergarten.

Not only do children thrive in Y Child Care, but parents find resources that help them become stronger families, too!

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT:

“Prior to Kindergarten Camp [our 5 year-old twins] had been quite apprehensive about going to Kindergarten, but after camp, they were much better prepared and much less afraid of this key change in their lives.” -Thaddeus, Dad, Y Preschool

With a mission centered on balance, we bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. Our state-of-the-art fitness facilities, personal fitness programs, child watch, and group exercise classes all help families achieve success. Youth, adults and families alike receive the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

Healthy L iv ing:

“We appreciate the Y’s presence in the community. Our family benefits from the fitness room during the school year and the pool during the summer months. The staff are committed to the well-being of its members.” -E.S., YMCA Member

Our pledge is to never turn a child away based on their inability to pay. Thanks to our many generous donors - who include community members, local businesses, volunteers, members, and staff – we can honor that pledge by offering financial assistance and scholarships for all our programs and services from membership to child care, sports to swim lessons, diabetes prevention to refugee assistance. The Y is so much more.

Socia l Responsibi l i ty :

“At one point I had no child care. I went to DES for assistance. All they could do was put me on a waiting list but they did send me to the YMCA. The first person I met there helped me though the whole process… She met my deadline and stayed on top of my [request for] assistance. From then on my kids have been taken care of in the best way. Everyone there has helped my kids grow so very much stronger. Each staff member there is the sweetest person I’ve ever met, top to bottom… They’ve kinda coached me through being a better single parent and dad to my girls and son. I can’t thank you guys enough for everything. You have been like family to my family.” -Robert, Parent, YMCA Mulcahy/City Child Care Center

ENSURE A BRIGHTER FUTURESAFEGUARD YOUR ANNUAL GIFT INTO PERPETUITY

Roy Morey has been all over the world working for theWhite House, State Department and the United Nations. His career included positions in Thailand, Samoa, Vietnamand China, but for him, there is no place quite likeTucson, and no organization quite like the YMCA.After 22 years of international development work, Roy wondered at first if his experience was relevant in his home town. He soon had his answer. “A kid in Tucson will have some of the same needs as the kids in Hanoi and Beijing.”

The YMCA’s commitment to never turn a child awaybased on their inability to pay inspired Roy and his wife,Delores. The Moreys make an annual contribution to theY and they also set up part of their estate as a gift tothe YMCA Foundation. A planned gift of $25,000 or morewill guaranty a $1,000 annual gift into perpetuity.

That’s why the Roy and Delores Morey ScholarshipFund is an important part of the YMCA Foundation.Their investment will provide valuable support for kidsincluding infants, preschool and after school child care, and youth activities. Their legacy will ensure a brighterfuture for thousands of Tucson children.

You can also help kids learn self-confidence, discipline, civic engagement and leadership. A bequest through yourwill or estate ensures that essential Y programming for kids and families continues for generations to come.
