Barn Quilts of WisconsinWisconsinites consider barns an art formunto themselves. After all, they are emblem-atic of our way of life and come in lots of va-rieties, from round to rectangle, gabled togambrel, fieldstone to wood. Now, many arebeing jazzed up with the addition of quilts. Not the fluffy, keep you warm on a cold nightvariety, but rather an 8 by 8 foot wood pieceof art (or some other square configuration)affixed to the side of a barn for all to see.Often created by volunteers, all that’sneeded is a willing barn owner to donatehanging space, and there have been lots ofwilling types in these parts. In fact, Wiscon-sin is considered a leader in this rural artmovement, and we think that’s as it shouldbe given it honors the agri way of life.

Barn quilt tours are becoming so popularfor motorcoach outings and Sunday after-noon drives that communities have evenstarted putting out maps for self-guidedtours that include stories about the barns, the inspirations for the quilt designs, andprofiles of the people who created them.

This symbol of comfort is showing up inGreen County big time, with a whopping 115plus barns are on display there. ShawanoCounty isn’t far behind with more than 100barn quilts, and Rock County has 70 andcounting. Lafayette County is using its 60barn quilts to promote the culture and his-tory of the area. Barn quilts in KewauneeCounty appear on historically significantbarns. In Marquette County, there are some40 barn quilts and murals. Columbia Countyis new to this but already you can see howartistic expression is being encouraged inthe creation of their first half-dozen barnquilts. Add Door, Walworth and Racine Coun-ties to round out your barn quilt itinerary.

This is an art form that makes people feelgood about where they live, and we dare saymakes visitors feel good about where theyvisit too.

Wisconsin’s Public ArtWisconsin has a wealth of art that truly be-longs to the people. Statues and monumentshave long decorated our parks and govern-ment buildings. Since 1980, over 1,000 sep-arate pieces of public art have been addedand installed where it’s accessible to every-one. Some are hidden in plain view, so mucha piece of daily life that you may not recog-nize it.

Whether it’s a glass sculpture by formerUW Alum Dale Chihuly, the mathematicallyinspired Fibonacci Chimes located in the In-stitute for Discovery, or a 1931 bubbler de-signed by Vilas Zoo director FredWinkelmann, it’s waiting for discovery.

Let it tickle your imagination, capture youin its creative web and engage all yoursenses. Wisconsin’s art is begging you tocome and explore. Finding this fun is easy! For more information go to: artsboard.wi.gov/percentforart/index.html

Indigenous or Native Art of WisconsinNative American art is about evolution. While works by Wisconsin Native artists can be rooted in tra-dition, it also has important things to say about the modern world and the future. Some Native Wis-consin artists take the traditional and lend it a new twist, for art is created in the present, notfrozen in time.

Going to the original source of art will always provide you with an experience – it’s where storiescan be shared and mutual understandings grow. Here, you can learn from the artists themselvesand celebrate Wisconsin’s history through its diverse culture. We encourage you to explore further.

Morrow’s Native Art, HaywardArtist and teacher Ramona Morrow of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and

Plein Air or Making Art “In the Open Air”Art. It’s not magic, it’s a process. It’s a skillthat can be taught and observed in action.Wisconsin’s natural beauty sets the stage forour plein air artists who seek to capture all thegreat outdoors has to offer in real time, on lo-cation, where bug spray may be just as impor-tant as green paint and brushes.

Want to know “how do they do that?” This isthe time and place to learn from the experts.Generally lasting 3-5 days, plein air festivalswelcome those who want to know more, andwelcome your questions while letting you ob-serve first-hand the mechanics and skill thatare the building blocks of creative expression.

Each year, the number of plein air eventsgrows. Some are competitions where prizemoney is awarded, others are community fundraisers where arts enthusiasts can bid on freshoff the brush artwork. But always, it is theartist taking on nature rain or shine.

We will set you on a path with some dates tomark on your calendar then hope you’ll tap intothe Wisconsin Plein Air Painters Association’swebsite – http://wipapa.blogspot.com/ – wherethe latest events are listed. Who knows, youmay even be inspired to join in the fun.

Travel Green wasthe first certification program in thecountry that went beyondaccommodations to include tourismbusinesses of all sorts-events,attractions, restaurants, and everythingin between.

So if leaving a lighter footprint isimportant to you, then considerpatronizing the hundreds of Travel GreenWisconsin™ certified businesses whenvisiting. Visit travelwisconsin.com for a listing.
