Ford sets standard againFord, the industry’s truck

leader, marks the launch of thelatest F-150 with a new state-ment on pickup luxury for2013 – the F-150 Limited.

“The F-150 Limited signifiesthe highest levels of designrefinement, luxury and tech-nology that we’ve ever offeredin a Built Ford Tough pickuptruck,” said Ford Group VicePresident for ProductDevelopment, Raj Nair. “TheF-150 Limited reflects a grow-ing trend – more and morecustomers today have highexpectations for luxury andconvenience, yet their needscall for a truly capable truck.”

Ford leads the luxury trucksegment. In 1999, the compa-ny introduced the special-edi-tion 2000 Harley-Davidson F-150. In 2001, the first KingRanch F-150 arrived. The2009 F-150 took truck luxuryto new heights with thePlatinum model.

Today, more than 30 percentof F-150 sales are from thesehigh-end trims, with MSRPsthat start at more than$35,000 and reach almost$50,000.

Limited meets the stilluntapped and growing luxuryneeds of customers and dealersinterested in exclusivity andfine craftsmanship who wantto differentiate themselvesfrom other high-end options.F-150 Limited surpasses thewell-appointed Lariat, west-ern-themed King Ranch andcontemporary Platinum.

The 2013 Ford F-150Limited design combinesunique 22-inch polished alu-minum wheels and center capswith a monochromatic exteriortheme available in three hand-some hues – Ruby RedMetallic Tinted Clearcoat,Tuxedo Black Metallic andWhite Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat.

The theme carries throughthe F-150 Limited exteriordesign with body-color front

and rear bumpers, frontbumper valance, sideview mir-ror caps, wheel-lip molding, upper fascia and grille sur-round.

Segment-first HID head-lamps provide a signature lookwhile delivering two and a halftimes more light than conven-tional halogen lamps. Lampdetailing even incorporates F-150 insignias.

Jewel-like chrome high-lights the bold three-bar grille,

tie-down hooks lining thecargo box, the single tip of thetuned exhaust and the towhooks on 4x4 variants. “LIM-ITED” dimensional letteringaccents the box sides.

F-150 Limited is availableexclusively with a SuperCrewfour-door cab configuration.

IInntteerriioorrRich red and black full-grain

leather-trimmed seats takeluxury and style to new heightsin trucks – capitalizing on a

trend seen in other high-endluxury vehicles. The seats alsooffer cooling and heating withmemory functionality toremember seating preferencesfor two different drivers. Headrestraints are four-way-adjustable and second-rowseats are heated, too.

Aluminum trims the centerpanel and console, lending asophisticated yet technicaltouch that complements thepiano black accents. Ambient

lighting can shift the mood ofthe F-150 Limited interior, offering five accent colors.

A standard moonroof pro-vides the upward view, whilethe rear view camera aidsmaneuvering visibility. Voice-activated navigation offers abird’s-eye view via a centrallymounted 8-inch LCD screen.A power-sliding rear windowfeatures privacy tint anddefrost functionality.

Connectivity comes stan-dard with MyFord Touch pow-ered by SYNC. Designers haveoptimized the physical inter-face for MyFord Touch toaccommodate truck users whomay be wearing work gloves byproviding easy access to cli-mate controls and audio pre-sets on the center stack.

Limited offers a uniquegauge cluster design with a4.2-inch driver-programmableproductivity screen that can becustomized to monitor variousvehicle systems.

The new series level alsoincludes a media hub withUSB ports, an SD-card readerand RCA video input jacks. Apowerful Sony Audio System isstandard.

F-150 Limited bringsuncompromised capability forentrepreneurial and lifestylepursuits with an electronic six-speed automatic transmissionwith tow/haul mode, trailertow package, trailer brake con-troller, Reverse SensingSystem, power-deployablerunning boards and a 110-voltpower inverter.

The 2013 Ford F-150 Limited brings a new level of luxury and refinement to the pickup truck market.

Providing a better viewSUVs, crossover vehicles and minivans have

long been the most popular types of cars forfamilies. They offer plenty of space, but theyhave an inherent problem: it's not always easy toback up in a vehicle that big.

Large vehicles often have equally large blindspots when driving in reverse, which is an espe-cially dangerous problem for people with youngchildren. In some cars, it's all but impossible tosee what's directly behind the rear bumper whenbacking up.

The solution: put a video camera behind thevehicle to give the driver better visibility.

BBEECCOOMMIINNGG SSTTAANNDDAARRDDWhat started out as a sci-fi dream and high-

end luxury for a few well-healed buyers has nowbecome standard equipment on a wide range ofvehicles.

Rear-view cameras are so useful that manycrossover vehicles and SUVs offer them acrosstheir lineup, at no extra charge. Most luxurycars, whether big or small, also offer rear-viewcameras as standard equipment or as a nominalupgrade.

OOTTHHEERR CCAARRSSWhile they're most common in large family

vehicles, these backup cameras can also be use-ful in smaller cars.

Little two-door coupes, for example, usuallyhave a big blind spot in the back. Their curvedrooflines, thick back pillars and high door linesmake them look sexy, but they also can limit vis-ibility when backing up.

In cars like this — or any car with poor rearvisibility, for that matter — it makes sense tospring for the backup camera system if it'soffered as an upgrade. Just one avoided fender-

bender could pay for the added cost, which isusually minimal.

CCOOMMMMOONN UUPPGGRRAADDEEWhy are rear-view cameras becoming such a

cheap, popular option? Because they're easy for

the manufacturers to install. Most camera systems take advantage of a dig-

ital screen on the dash that is sometimes usedfor the navigation system and sometimes simplyfor controlling the radio station. Adding a rear-

view camera is an easy thing for manufacturersto do when these digital displays are becomingavailable in virtually every car today, which isone reason the cameras have proliferated soquickly and affordably.

Camaro range expandsThe road-racing-inspired

Camaro 1LE performancepackage returns for 2013 withunique gearing, suspensiontuning and tires that make themodel capable of more than 1 gof lateral acceleration and asub-three minute lap time atVirginia InternationalRaceway’s Grand Course. It isoffered on Camaro SS coupeswith manual transmissions.

All Camaro SS models nowfeature variable-effort electricpower steering and an avail-able dual-mode exhaust sys-tem on manual transmission-equipped models. Both fea-tures were introduced on theCamaro ZL1.

In addition to the new per-formance features offered onthe Camaro SS, all 2013Camaro models offer a widerrange of choices and enhance-ments that will help it remainAmerica’s most popular sportscar.

NNeeww 11LLEEThe 1LE package is offered

on 1SS and 2SS coupe modelswith an exclusive TremecTR6060-MM6 six-speedmanual transmission. Pairedwith a numerically higher 3.91final-drive ratio, the close-ratiogearing of the transmission istuned for road-racing perform-ance. As with the ZL1, the 1LEtransmission features a stan-dard air-to-liquid cooling sys-tem for track use.

The 1LE also features exclu-sive, monotube rear dampersinstead of the twin-tubedampers on SS models. Thenew hardware allowed engi-neers to tune the 1LE suspen-sion to focus on optimal body-motion control while preserv-ing much of the ride qualityand wheel-motion control ofthe Camaro SS.

Visually, the 1LE package isdistinguished by its matte

black hood, front splitter andrear spoiler – as well as the 10-spoke ZL1-based wheels, which are finished in black. The functional front splitterand rear spoiler contribute tothe car’s on-track performanceby helping to reduce aerody-namic lift at high speeds.

MMyyLLiinnkkChevrolet’s color touch radio

with MyLink infotainment isavailable on 2013 Camaro LS,SS and ZL1 models. The colortouch radio, with a seven-inchtouch screen, also can bepaired with an available in-dash GPS navigation system –a first for the Camaro.

The color touch radio withMyLink gives customers ahigher level of in-vehicle wire-less connectivity and cus-tomized infotainment options, while building on the safetyand security of OnStar.

DDeessiiggnnCamaro’s heritage-inspired

interior and exterior conveysportiness through iconicdesign cues. A rear spoiler isstandard on all models and avariety of stripe packages offersa broad range of personaliza-tion features.

LT and SS models are avail-able with the RS package, which adds 20-inch wheel,body-color roof moldings andantenna, as well as high-inten-sity discharge headlamps.Eighteen-inch wheels are stan-dard on LS and LT model, with20-inch wheels standard onSS.

The Camaro convertiblebrings top-down driving funand style to LT and SS models. And because the architecturefor the fifth-generationCamaro was designed toaccommodate a convertiblemodel, it gives the cars coupe-like driving dynamics.

IInntteerriioorr

The 2013 Camaro is inspired by Chevrolet’s muscle-car heritage, with a great combination of style and power.

Camaro’s well-executed bal-ance of heritage and contem-porary features provides a funand comfortable environmentfor up to four. An ambientlighting package on 2LT and2SS trims gives the interior aspecial glow with LED lightpipe technology.

Driver and passenger seatsfeature six-way adjustable set-tings (fore/aft, up/down andtilt), with power recline frontseats that are standard on LTand SS models. Heated,leather-trimmed seats are partof the 2LT and 2SS trim pack-ages.

Additional comfort and con-venience include a standarddriver’s foot rest (dead pedal),power windows with expressup/down, an auxiliary gaugepanel in the center console –standard in 2LT and 2SS – anda new ZL1-inspired shift knobfor all manual transmissions. A

leather-wrapped, three-spokesteering wheel is standard onLT and SS.

A head-up display, whichprojects key instrument, Turn-by-Turn navigation and audiosystem details on the wind-shield, is part of the 2LT and2SS trim packages.

Maximum efficiency, usabilityFord Motor Company once

again raises the hybrid fuel-economy bar with the all-newFord C-MAX Hybrid, which isnow officially EPA-certified at47 mpg city, 47 mpg highwayand 47 mpg combined – beat-ing Toyota Prius v by up to 7mpg.

Hybrids traditionally havebeen more economical in citydriving than on the highway, unlike conventional vehicles.C-MAX Hybrid is Ford’s firsthybrid vehicle to offer 47 mpgacross the board.

C-MAX Hybrid returns thesame fuel economy whetherdriving cross-country or acrossthe city – stemming mostlyfrom a growing list of Fordinnovations that have helpedthe vehicle to deliver animpressive list of metrics, suchas its 570-mile overall range, taking customers from LosAngeles to Las Vegas and backon one tank of gas.

“The all-new C-MAXHybrid is a great symbol ofhow Ford has transformed intoa fuel-economy and technologyleader with 47 mpg across theboard and a highway rating 7mpg better than Toyota Priusv,” said Ford Vice President ofPowertrain Engineering JoeBakaj. “We’ve done this withinnovation – represented bynearly 500 hybrid patents –while driving costs down 30percent so we can bring thesefuel-saving vehicles to morecustomers.”

C-MAX Hybrid is expectedto be America’s most affordablehybrid utility vehicle with abase price of $25,995, includ-ing destination and delivery, which is $1,300 lower thanToyota Prius v. C-MAX Hybridis currently available for orderat Ford dealers nationwide.

As hybrid vehicle drivers tra-ditionally saw superior fuel-economy figures in city driving, loyalists maximized their fueleconomy through regenerativebraking in stop-and-go traffic. But now higher-speed innova-tions have caught up on effi-ciency.

“City, highway, and every-

where in between, C-MAXHybrid is EPA-certified at 47mpg,” Bakaj said. “It’s a win-win-win.”

PPoowweerrThe power of C-MAX

Hybrid stems from the combi-nation of a gasoline engine anda battery-driven electric motor, providing customers with “realcar” performance and capabili-ty. C-MAX Hybrid will offer atop speed of 62 mph in EVmode and 188 net horsepower, beating the Toyota Prius v bymore than 50 horsepower.

When powered by gasoline,C-MAX Hybrid uses the all-new 2.0-liter Atkinson-cyclefour-cylinder engine – power-ful and fuel efficient andamong the most advancednon-turbocharged four-cylin-der powertrains Ford has everoffered.

C-MAX Hybrid also offersclass-exclusive technologiessuch as SmartGauge withEcoGuide along with the avail-able hands-free liftgate and

active park assist.SSmmaarrttGGaauuggeeThe latest-generation

SmartGauge with EcoGuide isdesigned to help drivers get themost from the C-MAX Hybrid, providing information such asinstantaneous fuel economy tohelp them more closely moni-tor how their driving behavioraffects the vehicle’s efficiency.

The Brake Coach feature –part of SmartGauge – helpsdrivers optimize their use ofthe braking system so thatdriving range can be enhancedthrough proper braking tech-niques.

Redesigned imagery ofgreen leaves shows overalldriving efficiency – as driversimprove their efficient driving, they are rewarded with moreleaves.

PPrraaccttiiccaalliittyyC-MAX Hybrid offers room

for five people and plenty ofcargo – making it perfect forthe owner with an activelifestyle.

The vehicle has a highroofline – 63.9 inches – offer-ing ample interior space andflexibility. C-MAX Hybridoffers 99.7 cubic feet of passen-ger space compared with 97cubic feet in the Toyota. Thespacious C-MAX Hybrid alsoprovides greater headroom inboth front and rear seats thanthe Prius v.

For cargo, C-MAX Hybridhas 60/40 split-fold rear seats. The seats easily fold flat with52.6 cubic feet of space behindthe first row and 24.5 cubic feetbehind the second row.

The all-new C-MAX Hybridis part of Ford’s first dedicatedline of hybrid vehicles that alsoincludes the 2013 C-MAXEnergi plug-in hybrid.

Ford C-MAX Energi plug-inhybrid is projected to deliver550 miles of total range, including more than 20 milesin electric-only mode, nearlydouble the electric-only rangeof the Toyota Prius plug-inhybrid.

Ford’s new C-MAX is available as both a highly efficient hybrid model and as a plug-in car.

A great time to buyHistorically speaking, there may never have

been a better time to purchase a new car thanright now.

Not only are cars more advanced than everbefore -- with new technologies and reliable,fuel-saving drivetrains that can save driversmoney -- but they're also available during a "per-fect storm" of financial conditions that make it agreat time to consider purchasing a new vehicle.

LLOOWW IINNTTEERREESSTT RRAATTEESSEveryone knows that interest rates can make a

big difference over the life of a loan. A few shortyears ago, top-tier car buyers may have had topay 10-percent interest or even higher to pur-chase a new vehicle, while people with less-than-perfect credit would have to pay even more.

Today's interest rates, though, are drasticallylower than they were just three or four years ago.The financial crisis of 2008 caused centralbankers to lower interest rates, and they've keptthem near record lows ever since.

That means buyers can save thousands of dol-

lars compared to what they would have paidbefore 2008. It makes new cars more affordablefor more people, and it lowers monthly car pay-ments for everyone.

AAVVAAIILLAABBLLEE FFIINNAANNCCIINNGGAnother reaction to the 2008 financial crisis

was a tightening of lending standards. For a brieftime, unless you had spotless or near-perfectcredit, it was all but impossible to qualify for acar loan.

Fortunately, the auto financing world hasreturned to a more reasonable place since then.Car makers and banks reported making moreloans to people with lower credit scores in 2012,and dealers are saying that it's easy to findfinancing for people with all types of credit his-tories.

Between the historically low interest rates andmore reasonable lending standards, now may bethe perfect time to shop for a new car. There's noway of knowing how long these current financialconditions could last.

Connectivity for allSmart phones and tablet computers mean

there is no such thing as an offline life today.People are always connected.

The same thing applies to new vehicles, too,as many 2013 models are rolling out new con-nectivity features that let you use your phone orother devices to stay informed and entertainedwhile on the go.

And, while technology like this used to beunveiled for only the most expensive luxurycars, many of today's carmakers are reachingout to younger, more tech-savvy buyers by offer-ing their best connectivity features across theirfull lineup of vehicles — including their leastexpensive compact cars that young people canmost easily afford.

PPHHOONNEE CCOONNNNEECCTTIIOONNThe vast majority of today's cars, including

many compact cars, offer some way to connectyour phone to the car wirelessly.

The advantages are obvious: Instead of hav-ing to pull your phone out of your pocket andfumble with the small keys or touch screen on it,you can keep your hands on the steering wheeland eyes on the road by letting your car do thework.

When you get a phone call, for example, manycars will just let you press a button on the steer-

ing wheel to take the call. You'll talk naturally, using the car's built-in speakers and micro-phone, without having to even pick up your cellphone.

VVOOIICCEE,, MMUUSSIICCMost of today's cars offer some type of voice

command, too. Depending on the particular carand phone you're using, you might be able tosay, "Call Mom" and have the phone call gostraight through.

The same thing applies to your music collec-tion. If you've got thousands of MP3s on yourphone, many new cars will let you access them— and often control them by voice — wirelesslyusing a Bluetooth connection. Some offer a USBport to let you download your entire music col-lection onto a hard drive in the vehicle.

DDAATTAA OONN TTHHEE GGOOFinally, a few 2013 models are connecting to

the internet like never before. One new option isusing an in-car Pandora app to stream musicwirelessly through your car's stereo system.

The bottom line is that carmakers are stayingon the cutting edge of digital technology toremain competitive. If you want your vehicle toseamlessly integrate with your digital life, take alook at the latest 2013 models to see how farthey've come in terms of technology.

Is your car trying to tell you something? While talking cars only appear in the movies,

your vehicle can still communicate using its ownlanguage. Sounds like squealing, thumping, hissing and grinding are all signs that your vehi-cle may be trying to tell you something, says theCar Care Council.

“It’s important for car owners to listen and act

accordingly when their vehicle speaks up,” saidRich White, executive director, Car CareCouncil. “By checking out what your vehicle issaying, you can take care of the problem nowand avoid a breakdown or more costly repairslater.”

Many motorists are familiar with noises their

vehicles make on a daily basis. However, anynoise that is new, different or suspicious mayindicate a problem. For example, a high-pitchedsqueal that stops when pressing on the brakepedal is a sign that a vehicle’s brakes should beinspected. The same goes for grinding thatcould be the result of worn brake pads that

should be replaced.Thumping that increases and decreases with

the speed of the vehicle could mean a trip to yourlocal service center. The diagnosis may be a tireproblem like a bubble in the sidewall or tornrubber that could lead to a blowout.

The 2013 Chrysler 200 has a simpler model lineup this year with just three choices: LX, Touring and Limited.

Sonata a thing of beautyBy Derek PriceCARGAZING.COM

Sonata is a great name for acar. Hyundai probably pickedit as the moniker for its mid-size sedan because it soundsso musical and Italian, bothgreat things for an aspira-tional car company in Asia.

Now there’s a new reason itmakes a great car name:everyone seems to be singingthe Sonata’s praises.

Unless you’ve been living ina cave for the past four years, isolated from all things auto-motive, then you shouldn’t besurprised to learn thatHyundai doesn’t suck any-more. They used to buildcheap, throwaway cars, butnow they’ve turned thingsaround.

The current generationSonata is a big reason why.

For starters, it looks amaz-ing. You can set it next to vir-tually any other four-door carin the world and walk awaysaying, “Wow!”

Its design stands outbecause so many other sedanshave taken the boring, saferoute and ended up with dull, lookalike cars as a result. In an

effort not to offend anyone, most family cars have startedto look pretty much the same.Hyundai’s swoopy, curvy stylewas a gamble, but it worked.

Thankfully, its beauty ismore than skin deep. TheSonata is also one of the bestdriving cars in its price class, with a lineup of sophisticatedand efficient engine/transmis-sion combinations that let itdrive with a luxurious taut-ness, which is a hard mixtureto get right.

The suspension feels firmbut not too rough. It feelssmooth but not too squishy orbouncy. The end result is a carthat provides enough feed-back to satisfy the enthusiastsand enough comfort for peo-ple who want to just sit backand relax over long stretchesof highway.

Hyundai nailed the overalldriving feel, especially withthe 2.0-liter turbochargedengine. It makes 274 horse-power — seriously, almost amusclecar-like number —while still earning a 34-mpghighway fuel economy rating.Few engines are capable ofmaking such a huge amount

of power while using so littlefuel, something that easily jus-tifies its price premium overthe base engine.

Sonata pricing starts at$20,895, or $24,895 if youwant the turbocharged engine.

Granted, the base engine isno slouch. It makes 200 horse-power, which is considerablymore than the 2.4- or 2.5-literengines in the 2012 ToyotaCamry, Honda Accord, NissanAltima, Ford Fusion and ChevyMalibu, all while getting 35mpg on the highway.

Either way you go, you’ll begetting a remarkable power-train.

And to top it off, the Sonatastill has the best cabin in itsclass.

It’s not only a comfortable, practical and pleasant place to

The Hyundai Sonata looks more expressive than most mid-size sedans.

spend lots of time on the road, but all the parts fit together sowell that Hyundai needs togive lessons to other car com-panies — even some luxury

brands — on how to maketheir interiors feel more solidand upscale.

As a whole, the Sonata is atough car to beat. It does so

many things exceptionallywell, from styling to practicali-ty and even pricing, that it’sobvious why people are singingits praises.
