Fellow Cattlemen:

I would like to invite you to the Bluegrass Gelbvieh/Balancer Bull Sale. As many producers are finding, Gelbvieh influenced cattle are some of the most profitable in the beef industry. Gelbvieh’s popularity continues to grow due to the breed strengths: modest birth, excellent growth, maternal traits, quite disposition and feed efficiency.

This offering certainly reflects the breed’s strengths. I feel you will be pleased with the quality. This is one of the best offerings yet! Many are sired by some of the leading AI sires in the breed. Several of the bulls are products of ET programs with dams that are nationally recognized. Additional pictures will be available on Friday before the sale. Contact me if you would like a picture emailed of a specific lot. I will be glad to discuss the sale lots to provide you with any information that will help in your seedstock selection. If you are unable to attend the sale and are interested in bidding, please contact me prior to the sale. I will attempt to provide the best means for your participation.

Sincerely,

David Slaughter270-556-4259

Bar None Captain 42X

Maverick 70T

Maverick 70T was the high selling lot ($8,000) from the fall 2008 Bluegrass Sale purchased by Gelbvieh Bar None Ranch and Pleasant Meadows Farms. Maverick was among the top 25 used Gelbvieh sires in 2011. He has sired sale toppers such as ALS Mason 14W, GBNR Sampson 973W, EGL Maggie Y056, and GBNR Sugar's Mav 188Y. He sires cattle with eye appeal, performance & maternal strength, and carcass merit.

Captain 42X was the high selling lot ($15,250 for 50%) from the spring 2011 Bluegrass Sale purchased by Post Rock Cattle Company. His first set of calves are arriving and it appears he will certainly be a breed impact sire. Breeders who have used Captain are reordering semen and report that they are some of their best calves. They have exceptional performance with extra bone and muscle. He is sure to be a sire of sale features for years to come.

Additional Sale Features:

Sampson 973W was the high selling lot ($9,500 for 50%) from the fall 2010 Bluegrass Sale purchased by D & W Farms. His first set of calves are arriving with great success. He sires modest birth with great growth and eye appeal. Watch this fall for his first calves in the show ring and sales. Sugar’s Mav 188Y was the high selling lot ($15,500) from the fall 2012 Bluegrass Sale purchased by Larry P & Sunny D Farms and Padon Farms. He is a high performance son of Maverick and Sugar 446J. His personal performance and EPD profile was off the charts.

Bar None Highlight 120Y ET was another of the high selling lots ($10,250) from the fall 2012 Bluegrass Sale purchased by Rufshod Farms. He is a full brother to Bar None Captain 42X. He combines some of the best genetics the breed has to offer for performance and maternal.

New Generation AGA EPDs

The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.

Gelbvieh and Balancer® Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus

Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.

Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology

For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal fewer unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.

Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDsThe true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA

enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.

Growth Traits are More ReliableThe new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight

(YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.

Carcass Traits are StandardizedIn recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass

traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-to-finish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable.
