#053 introduction to tapestry Want a taste of history? Come discover how to dress and work on a frame loom. Students will learn the basics of weaving from setting up their loom to using plain weave and finishing off their piece. Blending of color, slit tapestry, angles, and eccentric weft are techniques covered in this class. Students should purchase and bring to class four stretcher bars (between 11” x 14” and 16” x 22”), 1 pack of size 13 tapestry needles, 1 pack of size 16 or 18 tapestry needles, 3 different colors of paton’s or Lion Brand 100% wool yarn, one spool of cotton twine from Lowes (roughly $2), a ruler or measuring tape, and a pair of scissors. The majority of the supplies can be found at A.C. moore or JoAnn’s Craft Shop.

Students will learn the basics: machine threading, using the feet and attachments and different stitches, while completing a drawstring bag. #056needle Felting Basics This class will teach you how to transform loose wool fibers known as roving into beautiful works of art, both 2D and 3D. It will cover various elements of felting such as armatures and blending of various colors and will allow for some exploration of the medium. Students will need to purchase and bring to class 2 or 3 different colors of Romney wool roving (8 oz.) 3 to 5 38-gauge triangle point (all purpose) felting needles ($1 each), and a needle felting work surface (foam block), all of which can be found online at www.woolery.com Alternatively, Quilting Adventures in Willow Lawn has a pack of different gauged felting needles as well as surfaces to felt on. #070Commercial Flooring installation There is a growing demand for quality commercial flooring installers. This two-part course is designed to provide indi-viduals with the basic skills needed to become a commercial flooring installer apprentice. The first semester will con-sist of classroom instruction; the second semester will consist of hands-on com-mercial flooring lab experience. Upon suc-cessful completion of the course, partici-pants will be eligible for certifications from various flooring manufacturers as well as possess the basic skills needed to be a productive employee in the commercial flooring industry. Participants must have strong math and language skills. A high school diploma or GED® is highly recom-mended.

This course is not designed for persons interested in residential flooring installation. (No Golden Age waiver)

The GED® test is changing... Are you ready? The new GED® test begins January 2014

Beginning January 1, 2014, there will be a new GED® test. The current version of the GED® test is expiring at the end of 2013. Persons who have taken the test but have not passed all parts (by the end of 2013) will be required to start over with the new test. The new GED® test will be completely computer-based and will cost $120.

GED® TESTING PROGRAM

Henrico County has two GED® testing locations. In order to qualify for testing, an individual must be at least 18 years old and NOT enrolled in the regular school program. It is recommended that a free practice test be taken before registering for the actual test. Registration must be completed in person at one of the adult education centers. A government-issued photo ID is required. Cost is $50.00 payable by cash in exact change or money order. In addition, there is an $8.00 first time tester fee required by the National GED® Testing Service. Registration is required at least 7 days (1 week) before the test date. Testers may register during regular office hours. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request to individuals who qualify.

FAST TRACK TO GED®

Fast Track to GED®!

The Fast Track class is designed to give students the extra instruction needed to pass the GED® test in ten weeks. Teachers will offer small group and individual instruction in the areas of:

• Essay writing • math skills • Test taking strategies • Interpreting graphics • Computer assisted instruction

Class content includes speaking, reading, writing, English language/civics and understanding American culture. There is a 70+ hour commitment required. Classes meet twice a week for 2.5 hours each.

Students are required to bring to class a three ring notebook, paper, and pencils.

Registration: Students are required to fi ll out a registration form and attend an evaluation to determine class level before entering classes. This process takes approximately 2 1/2 hours. Students must present a government-issued photo ID at the time of registration.

HENRICO COUNTY SENIOR CITIZENS/GOLDEN AGE PROGRAM

Henrico County residents, age 60 or older, are eligible to participate in the Golden Age Program and receive benefi ts. One of these benefi ts is free tuition for certain classes offered through Henrico County Public Schools Adult Education Center. A limited number of spaces are reserved for Golden Age Program members – on a “fi rst come, fi rst served” basis. There is a 2 class limit per person for Golden Age registration. Fees for registration, materials, supplies, textbooks and/or late fees must be paid.
