TOWN CENTRE’S REVITALISATION

Newman’s kids have been given a gee-up

from an innovative youth program that

sees young people receiving practical

skills around horses.

A partnership of Steve Burke Training,

Pilbara Job Link, PAMS (Puntukurnu Aboriginal

Medical Service) and Youth Connections,

the three-day course, does more than just teach

kids horse skills - it teaches self-development

and self-respect as well.

Jacinta Ronchi, Secretary of the Newman

Campdraft and Rodeo Association, is

enthusiastic about the program, which has

been running successfully in the Northern

Territory for several years.

The program’s proved popular with many

Indigenous people in the Northern Territory

who’ve found work as stockmen on stations,

so it also has the potential to provide the

Pilbara’s stations with indigenous workers at

a time when they’re few and far between.

Eight young people completed the first course,

with 15 attending the second one in November.

Four graduates from the first course came back

to provide support and role models for the

second course.

The workshop starts with classroom theory

before the hands-on training in the afternoon.

Many of the kids are excited and raring to go,

but have to temper their enthusiasm “and learn

to crawl before they can run,” according to Jacinta.

Ilona said the course teaches about the

importance of making good choices in life along

with the need to treat horses with respect.

It’s proved popular with parents, too, who are

Nicolas Armstrong has always loved pulling things apart to see how they work, then putting them back together again.

These days he’s pulling apart some very big machinery indeed as a qualified mechanical tradesman at BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Easter Ridge operation.

Nicolas finished his three-and-a-half year long apprenticeship back in August last year and started full time work at Eastern Ridge in November. After finishing school he decided that University wasn’t for him and chose an apprenticeship instead gaining work as part of BHP Billiton’s Indigenous Employment Strategy. It was a choice he’s never regretted.

“I loved it,” he said simply.

Today he’s relishing the opportunity to learn more about haulpaks, shovels, graders and all the other huge machines of modern mining operations.

“The bosses are very much aware of my capabilities and are ready to throw me in at the deep end,” he said.

Nicolas completed his apprenticeship through Apprenticeships Australia, a WA-based training organisation who manage apprenticeships for BHP Billiton Iron Ore, particularly at its Whaleback, Port Hedland and Newman operations.

It’s proved a particularly rewarding partnership for both businesses, with Apprenticeships Australia managing a wide range of apprenticeships for BHP Billiton Iron Ore.

Tom Galloway from BHP Billiton said apprenticeships were a great way to retain local residents and employees because it offered opportunities to the sons and daughters of Newman workers.

--- New “Out in the Sticks” Ambulance ---

Brynn Delfos from Sandvik, Jessica Barber from BHP Billiton Iron Ore and Chris Hopkins from St John Ambulance.

A medical emergency “out in the sticks” is never going to be a pleasant experience, but Newman residents at least have the reassurance that there’s every chance that one of the town’s 4WD ambulances will get to them wherever they are.

A new 4WD ambulance is heading to Newman in late February, bringing the town’s St John Ambulance fleet to four, including two 4WDs.

The hard working St John’s team of staff and volunteers now has two brand new Mercedes ambulances, as well as the 4WDs, making it one of the most modern fleets in country WA.

One important modification to the latest Mercedes is long-range fuel tanks, which gives the volunteer crew some welcome reassurance on long trips now that they don’t have to stop to refuel.

“It gives us just that little bit extra and it’s just one less thing to worry about,” said community paramedic Chris Hopkins.

Seventy five thousand dollars came from the BHP Billiton Community Grants program. A further $50,000 was raised from a joint Whaleback Drill and Blast Team and Sandvik program that saw Sandvik buying back used drill bits to recycle their carbide into new drill bits. BHP Billiton Iron Ore has now contributed $125,000 of the total $140,000 cost of the new ambulance.

The purchase of the latest 4WD has also been pushed forward, which is very good news for adventurous souls who get themselves into tricky situations in remote places.

NEWMAN’S COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

If you’re new to Newman and feeling a little perplexed by it all, then why not head down to the Newman Neighbourhood Centre on Newman Drive.

Centre manager Susie Oldham knows it can be hard finding your feet in a new town, so she encourages newcomers to just turn up and say “G’day”. When you do you’ll not only find heaps of information on what’s going on in Newman and where you can find the services you need, you’ll meet local people and make new friends.

But it’s not just for newcomers. In fact the Newman Neighbourhood Centre has been developing a sense of community and enhancing the quality of life for Newman families and individuals since the early 90s.

“It helps parents recoup and recharge the batteries,” said Susie.

One much appreciated initiative from the Centre is the Welcome Pack which is sent to newcomers to Newman. It contains useful information about services, schools, playgroups and the range of not-for-profit groups that make Newman such a special community.

It’s easy to find out what’s happening at the Centre by checking out the Newman Neighbourhood Centre Facebook page, which is full of information about this busy Centre.

The Newman Neighbourhood Centre is open from 8.30am-2.30pm Monday to Friday. For further information about the great activities at the Centre please phone 9177 9050 or email [email protected]

--- Neighbourhood Centre - the place to be! ---

Capricorn Oval’s new lights have revived local cricket.

Susie Oldham has a warm welcome for newcomers at the Newman Neighbourhood Centre.

New lights at Capricorn Oval have proved a big hit with Newman’s cricket lovers, revitalising the game in town and bringing the spectators out in some numbers.

The lights were first switched on in October for a night competition that sees five teams slugging it out, with a sixth team promised next season. Before the lights the game had largely withered in the heat, with 20/20 cricket at times played in scorching summer’s days.

“It’s much more pleasant to be able to play under the new lights and it provides a great opportunity to get more people involved in night cricket games,” said Newman Cricket Association Vice President, Brian Hall.

Playing on Friday and Saturday nights, by contrast, has proved very popular, with more players relishing the night game experience and the opportunity to play under the new lights. The spectators have taken to it as well, with up to 100 of them watching the game from the comfort of deckchairs.

In fact it’s proved so popular that a future six team competition will see the game extending to Sunday as well.

The lights are another result of the partnership between BHP Billiton Iron Ore and the Shire of East Pilbara, and support the upgrade of the Capricorn Oval Sporting Complex facilities.

If you fancy bowling a ball and swinging a bat you can find out more about the Newman Cricket Association at their website nca.wa.cricket.com.au or phone Triston Bergmann on 0433 405 101.

--- Martumili Artists take the Desert to Freo ---

Martumili artists brought the desert to Fremantle. Photo by Max Fairclough.

Fremantle people enjoyed a colourful slice of desert culture when the Martumili Artists opened their We Don’t Need a Map exhibition at the Fremantle Arts Centre last November.

We Don’t Need a Map provides an insight into Martu life and cultural practice, capturing the Martu people’s humour and spirit and providing an opportunity for urban audiences to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of desert life. Many of the participating Martu artists travelled from their desert communities to attend.

The opening weekend drew more than 5,000 people through the gates to an event that was kicked off in fine style with a lively performance by the Pigram Brothers.

The artists and their families are the traditional custodians of vast stretches of the Great Sandy, Little Sandy and Gibson Deserts as well as the Karlamilyi (Rudall River) area.

Martumili Artists were also kept busy over the festive season with a big Christmas sale.

For further information visit www.wedontneedamap.com.au

The We Don’t Need a Map exhibition is made possible with support from BHP Billiton Iron Ore, who are proud to be the principal sponsor for Martumili artists.

If you see a giant snake wrapped round the YMCA bus there’s no need for alarm – it’s just the handiwork of some very creative Newman youngsters.

The bus has recently received a bright new look thanks to the artistic efforts of YMCA members whose designs have been translated by a graphic designer into a new wrap-around branding for it. It’s a great way of visually celebrating BHP Billiton’s renewed funding for the bus for a further three years.

The bus is a vital element of the YMCA’s work, engaging with Martu young people aged from 10 to 25.

It helps them access the football and netball competitions and the East Pilbara Youth Centre, all of which is vital for integrating kids into the wider community.

Jackie Bickendorf, Manager of Youth Services with the Newman YMCA, said one popular bus journey with the high school kids was the trip to the pool as a reward for attending school.

The bus is also used to pick the young ones up and take them to school and return them home.

The revitalisation of Newman’s township took another step forward last November with the official opening of the Shire of East Pilbara’s new Boomerang Oval multi-purpose facilities and Iron Ore Parade, the new main street leading into the heart of Newman’s shopping precinct. The official opening was lead by Shire President, Lynne Craigie, and Minister for Regional Development, Brendon Grylls, at Boomerang Oval.

“The completion of these projects heralds a new era for the Town of Newman and the Shire of East Pilbara,” said Ms Craigie.

The Boomerang Oval multi-purpose facility is designed to cater for seasonal sports and can also be hired out for community and corporate functions as it features a separate function room and kitchen area.

Funding for Iron Ore Parade was provided as part of the $20 million funding pool dedicated to the Newman Town Centre Revitalisation Plan from the State Government’s Royalties For Regions program.

The Boomerang Oval multi-purpose facility was funded from part of the $4.8 billion from the State Government’s Pilbara Cities Vision.

--- YMCA Bus a Buzz! ---

The YMCA Bus’s bright new look.

Shire President Lynne Craigie, Martu Elder Peter Tinker and Minister for Regional Development and Lands, Brendon Grylls open the Boomerang Oval multi-purpose facilities.

“We beep the horn and knock on the door and say ‘c’mon, is such-and-such coming to school today?“

With the extension of BHP Billiton’s funding to the YMCA ‘till 2015 now firmly in place the bus will be serving the town’s young residents for many years yet.

--- Newman Triathlon ---Corporal Vaughn Missler, a champion soldier and leader of men.

A radical change of uniform from bright Hi-Vis to dull green camouflage has paid off for Corporal Vaughn Missler, a soldier in the Army Reserve, who’s risen from Private to Corporal in just 24 months.

In the process Corporal Missler has been named Champion Soldier for the Pilbara Region in 2012.

Corporal Missler is a member of One Squadron, which is responsible for regional surveillance and reconnaissance in the Pilbara.

“Corporal Missler worked above his rank to a very high standard and stepped up as leader at a time of need,” said the squadron’s Warrant Officer, Michael Keefe.

When he isn’t leading the troops, Vaughn Missler is a leading hand at BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Newman Hub.

He enjoys getting out and about in the Pilbara, the country he grew up in, and relishes the opportunity to get active with his fellow reservists at the regular Tuesday night training sessions. There are also weekend training exercises and a two-week-long border protection exercise to look forward to once a year.

Finding out about the award “was a bit of a spin out,” Vaughn said, but despite that he’s not about to give up the rewards of his “civvy job” for a full time army career anytime soon.

If you’re interested in joining the Pilbara Regiment contact Defence Force Recruiting on 131 901 or go to Defence Jobs: www.defencejobs.gov.au
