Lephalale Site Services

Giving Back to Move Forward Lephalale Site Services (LSS) is a partnership between Fedics

and a grassroots Waterberg-based company called MoonCloud 44.

The LSS partnership provides 20 000 daily meals at the huge Medupi Power Station construction site and Marapong Contractors Village. 15 May marked the celebrated completion of LSS’s latest CSI project, with the official opening of the Abbottspoort (Mokuronyane) Community Hall, built and sponsored by LSS. The Community Hall was opened by Andrew St Clair-Laing, Chairman of Lephalale Site Services, and Chief K.D. Langa of the Mapela nation.

The day was celebrated by clients, suppliers, community leaders, municipal and government officials and some 1000 locals, who were treated to two slaughtered oxen and 100 juicy chickens cooked by local ladies on the grounds of their new Hall. A highlight of the day’s events and celebrations was the donation of five cattle to the five traditional leaders. The Fedics and MoonCloud partnership agreement was also reviewed and re-signed in the presence of the community.

Real transformation has taken place in this partnership. Traditional dancing and choir singing were the order of the day as the community gave thanks for their new asset, which will go on to be used for many future occasions.

LSS has had significant success with its social upliftment initiatives, which are driven by an intimate involvement in the community - some 300 Lephalale-contracted food services employees at Medupi come from surrounding areas and Lephalale’s time on-site has seen 1600 training certificates awarded to staff.

Other CSI projects completed • Refurbishment of the Seleka Community

Hall with a donation of 500 chairs.• Refurbishment of the Shongoane

Community Hall.• Lephalale enabled the construction of a

four roomed house in Seleka for an elderly man who had lived in a tent for many years.

Whether you’re a small practice or a large hospital, hospitality is always important. A good cup of tea or coffee makes all the difference. In private healthcare, patients are especially looking for a differentiated offering. So Fedics Healthwise and Ciro (with Douwe Egberts) partnered up to design and produce a fully mobile trolley that can deliver a premium coffee or tea “at every patient’s bedside”.

Their mobile coffee system enables catering teams at hospitals to run their beverage services smoothly and at speed. Rentia Pretorius, Fedics Regional Front of House Manager, tells us more about the implementation of the new mobile solution:

‘Two successful trials were held with the trolleys at Morningside and Sandton Mediclinics, with great patient and staff feedback. We have now successfully implemented full trolley services at Denmar Clinic, Limpopo Mediclinic, Secunda Mediclinic, Life Robinson and Lenmed Hospital. The benefit for the healthcare sector is a highly efficient coffee solution with no waste or pilferage. It guarantees consistent ‘in-cup-quality’ and cost transparency.’

How it works The coffee machine is kept on the Cafitesse trolley and is plugged in at ward walls as the vendors make their rounds. The trolley also offers fresh cold water and ice, and is further used to clear dirty cups after the service. An industry first from Ciro and Douwe Egberts, the mobile solution is aligned to global health standards.

A blend of business and pleasureRentia and Lizel Visser, Director of Operations, have just returned from a facilities visit, with Ciro, to the Douwe Egberts headquarters in Amsterdam. During their stay they were immersed in the world of Douwe Egberts coffees, their blending and roasting process, and the Cafitesse programme. They returned believing that we South Africans can hold our heads up high in the innovation game.

Medifed Cup In May, Fedics Inland held a golf day with Mediclinic, at Wanderers Golf Club. As the competition always sees Fedics and Mediclinic square off, it has become the ‘Medifed Cup’.

With players mainly coming from Fedics Inland and Mediclinic’s Northern region, the Cup contest is held twice a year and is hosted by each ‘rival’ in turn. This time around Fedics proudly retained the cup, with 220 points over Mediclinic’s 197.

All in a day’s playBridgestone vs Fedics Earlier in the year, Bridgestone and Fedics held a joint golf day at the Services Golf Club in Pretoria. It was a great success and a really fun day, to which employees brought their families. Congratulations to team Bridgestone on their win!

“To Whom It May Concern: On a recent Sunday, my husband and I were going to the theatre in the afternoon and thought we would have lunch at the Arts Café. We made the drive from Somerset West to town and arrived a bit early. It was 12:30pm and the café opens at 1:00pm. Nevertheless the staff invited us in for a coffee while they set up to open at 1pm.

The lunch was wonderful and we just want to say a very big thank you for your wonderful service. We will definitely be back even if we are not going to the theatre, a lunch is always good. John and Janet Daniel ”

Held in April, the conference was attended by the FSS management team and regional representatives. Its aim: to reflect and strategise. With a lot to cover in limited time, tasks were broken down into manageable chunks, and specific goals were set. Guest Speaker Gary Joseph, CEO of the South African Supplier Diversity Council, spoke on how to bring upcoming businesses into partnerships with organisations like Tsebo. This resonates with the culture of FSS, which supports the development of local-to-site supply chains.

Positive reinforcement came from Dr Chris Jardine, Tsebo Catering Solutions CEO, who gave insight into the number of sales prospects that would need to be uncovered in order for FSS to meet its new targets. Andrew St Clair-Laing, FSS MD, introduced Alan Bruens, recently appointed Tsebo Catering Solutions Financial Director, to the FSS team.

Management and the regional reps wrapped up the highly successful conference with an agreed-upon action plan of non-negotiable drivers for this financial year.

Fedics dietician Tracey Marais says there’s no need to add that extra tempting spoonful!tooth

When you add sugar to your food and drinks, says Tracey, you are using refined sugar, which contains very little nutritional value and, when consumed, is considered ‘empty kilojoules’. Then there’s soft drinks: 1 litre of the average soft drink contains an alarming 27 teaspoons of sugar!

Sugar-containing beverages are associated with excessive weight, Diabetes, Heart Disease and Hypertension. They also usually contain artificial additives, which have further adverse health implications – like dental damage. A common misconception is that unrefined sugars, like honey, molasses or raw sugar, offer a healthier alternative. Truth be told, they are still ‘empty kilojoules’ with little nutritional value.

Sweet?Sugar gives

you energy, true, but your body gets enough

sugar as it is from the food you eat

every day.

itDO JUST 1 2 3Opt for low fat/fat-free

milk, flavoured water or sugar-free soft drinks.

Are you addicted to sugar? If so, ask yourself why. If you can identify the reason you reach for a sugary drink,

it could make it easier to wean it out of your lifestyle.

Drink plenty of water; this will prevent you from feeling thirsty

and wanting to buy a sugary drink.

Take steps to reduce your sugar intake:

Life can be sweet, with diabetes

Last bit of food for thought: Approach love and cooking with equal abandon ~ The Dalai Lama

If you or anyone you know has diabetes, that doesn’t mean your life has to be any less sweet… Sweet Life is a free diabetes lifestyle magazine, distributed through Clicks Clinics and local support groups nationwide, and offers an inspiring take on the chronic condition – both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. They focus on the positive side of the condition: that if you’re in good control there’s nothing you can’t do. Editor Bridget McNulty is a Type 1 diabetic, and wants to spread the word that diabetes doesn’t have to hold you back from life. “It is possible to live a happy, healthy life with diabetes,” she says, “as long as you’re in good control. That’s what we’re trying to do with Sweet Life – showing people how to make diabetes part of everyday life. We have delicious, healthy recipes, fun ways to exercise and a panel of experts who give us advice on managing diabetes in a positive way.”
