Dear Friends,

What a Golden Anniversary! 2013 was a cause for celebration as it marked the milestone

of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Arts and Education Council in St. Louis.

Since our inception in 1963 as a United Arts Fund, A&E has raised and distributed more

than $100 million in support of nonprofit arts and arts education organizations. Over a

50-year span, we have provided 2,800 grants to hundrerds of organizations throughout

16 counties in Missouri and Illinois. We are fortunate to have longtime supporters who

have continued to believe in our mission of arts advocacy. A thriving arts climate only

strengthens the creativity, innovation and diversity necessary for a healthy, growing

community where people love to live, work and play. This support is made possible

through the efforts of businesses, individuals and community partners who recognize

that the arts are essential to building and sustaining a vibrant community.

And while we did celebrate 50 years of accomplishments, we also took a big step into

the future with the launch of our new cultural crowdfunding website, power2give.org,

a platform where individuals and corporations can donate directly to projects they care

about. You can read more about this new and exciting program on page 4.

We are grateful to live in a community that values the role the arts play in educating

our children, driving the economy and enhancing our quality of life. Thank you to our

generous supporters who believe in the mission of the Arts and Education Council and

Missouri Arts Award

The Arts and Education Council was presented with a Missouri Arts Award for Philanthropy in a

ceremony at the Capitol Rotunda in Jefferson City in February. Initiated in 1983, the Missouri Arts

Awards honor individuals and organizations that have made profound and lasting contributions to

the cultural and artistic climate of the state. Each year, Missouri Arts Awards nominees are reviewed

by a committee of Missouri citizens from throughout the state who are knowledgeable, experienced

and highly respected in the arts.

2013 Arts and Education Council Leadership

power2give.org

In November, the Arts and Education Council launched

power2give.org, a new online fundraising platform. The

launch of this exciting program is in partnership with the

Arts & Science Council of Charlotte, N.C. Originally devel-

oped in 2011, power2give.org has expanded to metropolitan

areas across the U.S., with St. Louis becoming the 21st city

to join the effort.

Cultural organizations funded by A&E use the site to de-

scribe — through creative videos and text — projects that

need funding up to $10,000 such as musical instruments

for children, costumes for a theater production, or the

development of an online music academy. Visitors to the

site direct their donations to projects that interest them.

The launch of this program was generously underwritten

by the Arthur and Helen Baer Foundation with support

from Emerson.

Arts Leadership and Management Academy

In its second year, the Arts Leadership and Management

Academy (ALMA), is an ongoing program offering a series

of workshops that provide professional development support

to individuals working in the arts. The sessions focus on

a variety of topics designed to help capacity building in

nonprofit organizations including grant writing, fundraising

strategies, financial leadership, board development and cre-

ating social media and digital strategies. At $30 per session,

ALMA workshops are affordable as well as informative.

Making an Impact

Additionally, the Academy is home to the Executive Directors

Roundtable, a professionally led program targeted to execu-

tive directors of arts and cultural organizations. The focus of

the roundtable is to support executive directors with peer

exchanges and resource sharing through professionally-

facilitated peer learning. The Academy also hosts Arts

Marketers, a program geared to providing tools and infor-

mation to marketing staffs.

ALMA is offered in collaboration with the Nonprofit Services

Center and generously funded by Wells Fargo Advisors.

Centene Center for Arts and Education

The Centene Center for Arts and Education is owned and

operated by the Arts and Education Council. The building

and its tenants serve as a dynamic cultural hub for the

arts in our community. Through the leadership gift of the

Centene Charitable Foundation, the Centene Center pro-

vides arts organizations access to state-of-the-art affordable

office space plus rehearsal, performance, meeting and event

space for sixteen arts organizations. The Laclede Conference

Room and The Rialto Ballroom and Atrium with rooftop

terrace are both available for rent to outside parties.

Honoring the Arts

St. Louis Arts Awards

Presented since 1992, the St. Louis Arts Awards is the

preeminent award ceremony honoring individuals who

achieve a legacy of artistic excellence, and organizations

and businesses that enrich St. Louis’ arts and cultural

community. Proceeds from this event benefit the Arts

and Education Council’s annual campaign that helps

to fund over 70 arts and arts education organizations

throughout the 16-county, bi-state St. Louis region.

Nearly 620 arts supporters attended the St. Louis Arts

Awards on January 21, 2013 at the Chase Park Plaza.

Among the highlights were moving tributes and stellar

performances including a special tribute to Lifetime

Achievement in the Arts honoree Chuck Berry by guitarist

Billy Peek that had the audience on their feet and dancing

in the aisles.

The other honorees included St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7

KWMU (Champion of the Arts), PNC Bank (Corporate

Support of the Arts), Michael Uthoff (Excellence in the

Arts), Duane Martin Foster (Art Educator of the Year),

Judy and Jerry Kent (Excellence in Philanthropy) and

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (Excellence in the Arts). The

2013 St. Louis Arts Awards, presented by Emerson, was

chaired by Ken and Nancy Kranzberg.
