The Graycliff Estate, designed by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is a masterpiece of his mid-career Organic Style. Located south of Buffalo, NY on the shores of Lake Erie, Graycliff awaits your discovery. A world away from the work-a-day world, Graycliff was designed for the pleasure of Isabelle R. Martin, the wife of industrialist Darwin D. Martin. With breath taking views over the lake, and the tranquility of three buildings set amidst more than eight acres of grounds and gardens—all designed by Wright--Graycliff has become known nationally as one of his most gracious residences.Designed between 1926 and 1931 as the summer estate of the Martin family (for whom Wright also designed a city residence, in Buffalo, NY) Graycliff is an easy drive from the western part of Route I-86, in Derby, NY. Although reservations are required, there are several tours daily during the summer and autumn, and several different types of tours as well. For those familiar with Wright’s other designs of this period (notably Fallingwater, in Pennsylvania) many of Wright’ s design innovations are first seen at Graycliff - water features, including a fountain and pond; graceful terraces and cantilevered balconies, ribbons of windows that allow views of both lake and landscape; and perhaps most significant (and revolutionary for its time), a house that is actually transparent, allowing views through a building to Lake Erie beyond.Wright designed Graycliff for Isabelle R. Martin and her husband Darwin, intending to provide a spirit of “repose.” In this, he succeeded, for the tranquility of the setting, coupled with the breathtaking architecture create a sense of utter relaxationEnjoy great architecture amidst the beauty of nature at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Graycliff. With ample free parking and a lovely gift shop, Graycliff is a must-see for those traveling to or through the area.

INTERSTATE 86 IS YOUR ROAD – TELL ALBANY TO JUST GET IT DONE!When fully designated, I-86 will complete the interstate system, providing major growth in upstate and western New York. Unless Albany receives
strong encouragement from western New York, the Southern Tier, and the Hudson Valley, the delays now imposed due to a lack of funding will continueand the advantages of interstate designation, including safety and economic development will not be realized. For information and to find out how you can
support the timely completion of Interstate 86 log on to ny-i86.net and facebook.com/i86coalition.

PET TRAVEL TIPS• Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. There are a variety of wire mesh, hard plastic and soft-sided carriers available. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. And P.S., it’s smart to get your pet used to the carrier in the comfort of your home before your trip. • Get your pet geared up for a long trip by taking him on a series of short drives first, gradually lengthening time spent in the car. And please be sure to always secure the crate so it won’t slide or shift in the event of a quick stop. • Your pet’s travel-feeding schedule should start with a light meal three to four hours prior to departure. Don’t feed your furry friend in a moving vehicle—even if it is a long drive. • Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death. • What in your pet’s traveling kit? In addition to travel papers, food, bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and a pet first-aid kit, pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity. • Don’t allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window. He could be injured by flying objects. And please keep him in the back seat in his crate or with a harness attached to a seat buckle. • When it comes to H2O, we say BYO. Opt for bottled water or tap water stored in plastic jugs. Drinking water from an area he’s not used to could result in tummy upset for your pet.

These days it isn’t easy for a person to be lost as long as he has a charged cell phone handy. Lost or missing persons can be tracked through electronic technology practically any place they may be. Indeed, it is a bit frightening when considering the vast technological resources that can be brought to bear in tracking individuals who by themselves or through the machinations of others are missing. However, this was not always the case. There was a time when it was quite easy to become lost.
Take the case of Job Straite, Sr., back in 1830’s Wellsville, NY.
Two hundred years ago it was necessary for pioneers to keep an eye on one another. They were a close bunch, deeply interested in the welfare of their families and neighbors. Settlements were few and isolated. Solitary individuals were at risk from Indians and wild creatures such as wolves and bears. It was not remarkable then that when ninety-year-oldJob Straite wandered off into a forest one afternoon, an alarm was raised across a ten-mile area and all of the settlers united in the search.
Mr. Straite became lost one Sunday afternoon while walking to visit his grandson, who lived a couple of miles away. The path wending through a patch of woods between the men’s homes was narrow and not always clear and the elderly man evidently became disoriented. It was not known that he was missing until the next afternoon, when his son realized he had not arrived at the grandson’s home. The alarm was immediately sounded throughout the ten-mile area and a search party organized. Concern mounted when no trace of the lost man was found.
The hunt continued on Tuesday; still no success. An element of panic swept the community and, on Wednesday, men left their regular work to join the search. Many worried the cold nights could kill the elderly. Many were whispering about the possibility of foul play. Several younger men hiked into the nearby hills, others looked in out-of-the-wayplaces. As time passed more of the old man’s friends feared he was murdered, although there were none to offer a motive.
The manhunt continued throughout the week, the searchers not willing to call it quits until Mr. Straite or his body was found. Hopes for the former possibility were at an all-time low when, by Saturday
evening, the lost man had not been located. The call went out to other settlements. Men from Scio, Andover, Willing and Independence arrived to join the hunt. Soon, 200 men were scouring the country side. Sunday morning, a line was formed reaching from Wellsville to Andover, a distance of eight miles, to systematically search every inch of ground.
Men stayed within shouting distance of one another and all were armed with guns and horns. The terrain was such that a man, particularly an elderly man, could easily lose his way. Clumps of trees and acre sized stretches of underbrush made movement difficult and provided myriad places a body might lie.
Toward the end of the afternoon three shots and a blare of horns echoed across the valley. About halfway between Wellsville and Andover the man was found – and he was alive! At least, he breathed but his mind was gone. He sat unconsciously digging with his hand in a hole in the ground. His mouth was filled with dirt and roots he had attempted to eat. His condition was indeed pitiable, but his friends rushed to his aid. The men took turns carrying him to the home of John Harvey. Harvey contributed a blanket which was rigged to poles to fashion a stretcher. Mr, Straite was carried four miles to what is now Elm Valley and turned over to the care of Dr. Rice. The doctor revived the old man and he lived for a number of years.
Manson Rice of Andover found the lost man. Erastus Baker was first to answer the shots signaling the discovery. One shot followed another, continuing down the long line, accompanied by the sounds of conch shells and horns and heartfelt shouts from the friends and family of Job Straite, Sr.
“The lost was found! The lost was found!”

Penumbral Lunar Eclips May 25, 2013
Will be visible in the Americas and Africa.
Meteor ShowerAugust 10-13, 2013before dawn, the PerseidsBest mornings to look: August 11, 12 and 13.The Perseid meteor shower is perhaps the most beloved meteor shower of the year for the Northern Hemisphere. The shower builds gradually to a peak, often produces 50 to 100 meteors per hour in a dark sky at the peak. The Perseids tend to strengthen in number as late night deepens into midnight, and typically produce the most meteors in the wee hours before dawn.
