Executive Director’s Corner

Like SAVE on

Dear Friends of SAVE,New Year’s greetings to one and all from the con-

sumers, staff and members of the boards at SAVE. As weenter 2013, all of us are excited about the opportunitiesand possibilities that lie ahead for furthering the SAVEmission.

While the times continue to be a challenge for us, wefirmly believe expansion of our existing programs, as well as new ventures, are onthe horizon. These will help our consumers expand their capabilities, experiencegreater happiness, and attain a higher level of independence.

As you know SAVE celebrated its 40th Anniversary this past year. The monthswere filled with sharing highlights of the four decades of growth and developmentalong with . As we embark on a new decade of caring service, I would like to sharesome historical constants that provide a firm foundation for our future endeavors:

1972 to Present - Support from St. Clair County Mental Health Board beginsBoard affirms importance of SAVE’s programs

1978 to Present - Partnership with United Way is establishedProgram funding expanded

1972 to Present - Volunteers regularly provide assistance supporting SAVE’sprograms, activities and facilities

1972 to Present - Community organizations pitch in to further SAVE’s work

1972 to Present - Financial support from individuals continues to expand

What all this boils down to is we could not do what we do or have a bright visionfor the future without YOU. We want to thank each of you who support our workthrough your care and concern; who volunteer at Turkey Hill and North Illinois; whoshare the SAVE story with others; and who provide financial support.

As we express our gratitude, I hope that 2013 is filled with success, happinessand fulfillment for you and all of those close to you.

REMEMBER THE SAVE MISSIONJames Freeman, Director of Development

“Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life oraccomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.”

- D. Thomas

If you would like to leave a “legacy of hope” for the men andwomen SAVE serves, consider including a gift to SAVE in your willor other estate plans. By doing so, you will be creating a sustain-ing investment that will provide resources far into the future forpersons who need help to realize their potential and live as inde-pendently as their abilities allow.

A special legacy gift to SAVE in your will or living trust is a won-derful way to extend your commitment to our mission. SAVE pro-vides education, care and developmental programs that enablethe women and men we serve to achieve success. If you are con-sidering this type of addition to your plans, you may want to takethe following language to your attorney:

“After fulfilling all other provisions for my heirs, I give, deviseand bequeath to the Lee Hopp St. Clair Associated VocationalEnterprises Foundation, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporationlocated in Belleville, IL, _____ percent of what remains of myestate (or $______ ) for its general purposes.”

If you choose to remember SAVE’s vital mission with a gift inyour will, please let us know. For more information about makinga legacy gift to SAVE, call 618-234-1992 ext, 123.

Consumer SpotlightMarvin Johnson

In the spotlight for this issue of In TouchWith SAVE is the recipient of the Consumerof the Year Award this past fall, MarvinJohnson.

Following graduation from Centreville HighSchool 24 years ago, Marvin attended

Belleville Area College for one year. Then he became part of theSAVE family. He has been a faithful worker during this time, including19 years of service at Taco Bell! His outgoing personality has madehim a source of encouragement and joy for consumers and staffalike. Marvin’s willingness to be of help in any way makes work andlife more pleasant for everyone around him.

Marvin is especially appreciative of the help he receives from hisprofessional counselor, Leroy Turner. Leroy has been an ever-readylistener as well as a source of encouragement and advice. Outside ofwork, Marvin enjoys the blues music of B. B. King and the storylineof the TV show “The Young & the Restless.” His favorite comic char-acter is ‘Underdog,’ and he likes the exploits of Superman andWonder Woman. He is an avid Cardinal fan and looks up to OzzieSmith, Willie McGee, Mark McGuire and Pete Rose.

One of nine children, Marvin remains close to his family and talksto his mother on the phone every day and to his brothers and sisterson a regular basis. He joins the family for special occasions andknows he can depend on them for anything he needs.
