3What are Scholastics?

What areScholastics?

Laura Mendez, 11

Scholastics was a great experience and I plan on entering next year again. This experience has taught me patience and perseverance. At times it got very stressful but I kept pushing forward and I am pleased with the results.

Audrey Moeller, 10

I think the Scholastics experience was extremely enlightening. I felt so honored to be selected and my favorite part was seeing the other work on display and thinking about how I could grow as an artist.

The AwardsBy the Numbers

9decades of work

28 categories of art and writing

25millions of dollars awarded as scholarships

100+ partner groups

Hope Wang, 11

I haven’t entered Scholastics with SHS, but from just participating in it over the past few years, I can tell that in general, more and more students are entering and receiving awards, which is awesome, because good art should be recognized and cultivated.

Morgan Feldhaus, 12

Honestly, I didn’t really have a plan when I began this project, I just had a lot of fun with it. It’s really about people doing common activities. I plan on pursuing art in college, keeping photography as a hobby.

My portfolio centers around the idea of the passing of my father due to Alzheimer’s and the degradation of memory. Most of these ideas play upon lighting in which it takes away features of the body like you can see in the image “Tabula Rasa”. My portfolio has taken me the entire first semester to get to the point it is now but I’m still working on it and I will probably continue with this concept after I graduate.

American VisionsNominees

Hope Wang, 11Diary Entry, Mixed Media

Five Gold Key works per region are nominated as “Best of Show.” These works are reviewed for the American Visions Award. One

National American Visions Award recipient is recognized per region.

The portrait itself consists of words I scribbled down during a vicious struggle with self-worth, identity, and pride. By marrying the bold sharpness of these pins with an emotional painting of my face, the pins represent the obvious concept--pain--but they also represent a barrier between my vulnerability and the eyes of others. This is my diary entry.

Hope Wang, 11

Madeline Garrett, 11The Future of Books, Mixed Media

This piece was based off of the idea that nowadays we are moving away from paper books and more toward electronic ones. What will we do with paper books in the future?

Art serves as a laxative for feelings – feelings that start in my heart and mess with my head. When I make art, these feelings are released through my hands and transformed into poetry for the eyes. Suddenly, when art is shared with peers, the weight of these feelings are dispersed and I no longer have to carry so much by myself. This has to be my favorite part.

To me, art gives you the biggest sense of accomplishment, because it’s something you succeed in yourself- it can’t just be learned.

My favorite thing about art is that there are no words to properly describe the emotions in the pieces. You can try to find the words, but there will always be something you can’t quite describe. With art you don’t have to say anything; you just have to look, breath it in, and feel.

Mackenzie Boyd, 10

I realized how useless negative thinking was. I kept worrying that all the time I’d put in was worthless, and it turned out the only thing that was worthless was the worry.”

Melissa Mendelson, 12

Honestly, my favorite things about art are the reactions and emotions it inspires in others. While I enjoy immensely working on the art itself, it’s immensely gratifying when I show it to my friends or parents or teacher and see the surprise and love in their face...that’s what makes art so wonderful for me.

I’m kind of sick and tired of people looking at me, finding out I’m an artist, and then expecting me to make pretty pictures of unicorns and fairies and rainbows and all of that girly stuff. What comes out of my mind is twisted and full of messages, and for some reason, that surprises people. Is it because I’m so small? Is it because I’m a girl? I don’t know.

Scholastics was such a great experience. It taught me just

how creative people can be and it’s nice to see what other

high schoolers can create. It truly inspired me to be a

better artist.

My favorite part about art is that I can be creative and there are no specific guidelines to it.

Art, I suppose for me, is the best way I can express my ideas with those willing to listen. Art is hard.
