Nexen, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNOOC Limited, is an upstream oil and gas company responsibly developing energy resources in some of the world’s most significant basins – including the UK North Sea, offshore West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico and Western Canada. We are strategically focused on three businesses: conventional oil and gas, oil sands and shale gas. Nexen has approximately 3,200 employees, with more than half working in Canada. The company is the recipient of many top employer awards and has been recognized for its training and skills development, employee engagement and community investment.

At Nexen, we’re not just looking for the right person for the job; we want the best and the brightest! But let’s face it, when it comes to attracting and retaining top talent there’s a lot of competition in the world of global energy exploration and production. At Nexen we succeed in this competitive world by attracting talented young people at the beginning of their careers and giving them the tools, resources and support to grow both personally and professionally.

2013 Science & Engineering 5

Alison Robertson was first introduced to Nexen in 2009 as an engineering student at the University of Calgary. After doing some research on the company, Alison decided that Nexen was an excellent fit for both her educational and career aspirations. For example, she was impressed by Nexen’s worldwide operations and the possible opportunities that being involved with these projects presented.

After completing a 16 month Engineering Internship Program, Alison joined the new grad program in 2011 after completing a Bachelor of Science, with a major in mechanical engineering and minor in petroleum engineering. Now in her third and final year of the program, she currently works as a production engineer in training in the shale gas group.

“I really enjoy the teams that I get to be a part of,” says Alison. “There’s so much diversity and different levels of experience within them. I also enjoy working in different project areas and getting to be involved with the full life cycle of projects.”Additionally, Alison enjoys meeting other employees from around the world. “I’ve had the opportunity to attend different conferences. These events are such great networking opportunities,” she explains. “It gives you a bigger picture of Nexen because you get to hear about what the rest of the company is doing.”

Next year, Alison will complete the new grad program and is planning on acquiring her professional engineering designation. Her experience so far at Nexen has set her up for an exciting future with the company.

One of Nexen’s signature human resource initiatives is its New Graduate Program, a development program offered to new and recent graduates in various disciplines, including engineering and geoscience.

Young professionals learn on the job skills by rotating through different areas of the company and working on high-profile projects. Assigned mentors provide coaching and feedback to each of the

graduates. Training is an integral part of the program which includes a CDN$7,500 corporate training budget per graduate per year. Together, these components develop technically skilled, confident,

motivated and innovative employees who contribute to Nexen’s ongoing success.

IntegrityAt Nexen, we don’t just talk about integrity, we live it. Our culture is defined by the actions of our employees; we set high expectations and provide a variety of resources to help our employees make responsible decisions. Nexen sets clear expectations around such topics as human rights, protection of privacy and appropriate business relationships which are made clear in the company’s How We Work: Our Integrity Guide. Working with integrity enables us to access capital and countries that might otherwise be difficult, strengthens the work we do with our stakeholders and helps us attract and retain talented employees.

Top Employer Rating Nexen was recognized as one of Alberta’s Top 60 Employers for 2013 by Canada’s Top 100 Employers. This special designation recognizes the Alberta employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. According to Mediacorp Canada Inc., Nexen’s recognition is highlighted by how we:• strongly support continuing education and development• offer compassionate leave compensation to employees who are called to care for loved ones• are dedicated to increasing Aboriginal representation in the workplace• offer an impressive fitness facility

Nexen also offers an Employee Recognition Program that awards bonus payments of up to $5,000 to individuals who contribute beyond their basic responsibilities.

CNOOC-Nexen Acquisition:On February 25, 2013, Nexen became a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNOCC Limited – China’s largest producer of offshore crude oil and natural gas and one of the largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the world. As a subsidiary of CNOOC Limited, Nexen continues to manage its global operations as well as CNOCC Limited’s North and Central American assets.

Student Employment Opportunities:In addition to New Graduate programs, Nexen has four Canadian employment programs for students to consider.

Engineering Internship Program Paid internships for engineering students lasting 12- or 16-months. Students develop technical skills which complement their academic learning.

Co-op Program: Lasting four- or eight-months, Nexen’s paid co-op opportunities allow students from various disciplines to gain practical experience and contribute to projects in their field of study.

Technical Summer Student Program: Four-month paid program aimed at students studying engineering, geoscience, geographic information systems and land disciplines. Students must be in their second or third year of their program to be eligible to apply.

Summer Student Program:Four-month program provides students with paid experience by performing a variety of tasks and projects. Open to all post-secondary disciplines.

I HATE when the term “networking” gets thrown around. What

even is networking now? Meeting someone, adding them on LinkedIn, and then eagerly anticipating them to accept your invite so that they can become a “connection”? This lacks substance and, even more importantly in commerce, rapport.

of all jobs filled are referral based.

up to

2013 Science & Engineering 13

CHANCES are you already have an established network of which you have yet to take full advantage. Family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues are a great starting point: often times, within these networks lies a rich source of business professionals who are willing to meet with you to discuss a wide range of job-seeking or business-related matters; whether it is individuals directly within this established network or a connection via someone in this group, a potential wealth of knowledge is within arm’s length once you start exploring these options. So ask. Ask your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues whether they know anyone with particular knowledge about an industry you’re interested in.

So what can you do to make m e a n i n g f u l connections?

THERE are plenty of other ways to branch off this immediate path of networking as well: Corporate information sessions, trades shows, and of course, your own University of Calgary Career Services, provide unique networking opportunities where you can speak with tenured professionals about what they do and how they found success in their field. If you are looking for a quick overview discussing the basics of networking, Career Services offers Networking 101 each semester to go over the ins-and-outs of a proper introduction and business interaction.

IF you are thinking, “Okay, but what’s in it for me? Why should I dedicate time and energy into improving my professional network?” Well, the statistics of vacant jobs that are not advertised publicly are staggering. Up to 60% of all jobs filled are referral based . In other words, your network is likely to get you that first job, not your resume. So, with that in mind...

Always strive to have a vibrant and valued network with connections that are actually meaningful.

And hey, maybe after you have met with someone you feel will assist your professional growth, consider sending them an invitation to connect on LinkedIn.

A lot of people ask me what “being yourself on purpose” really means. The answer is simple and I’ve created a formula to show you exactly

what I mean.Passion + Purpose = knowledge and confidence.

WHEN you connect on passion and purpose the result is knowledge which allows you to be confident. Another way

to put it is, when we talk about things we are passionate about and that have meaning to us we change and become educators, enthusiasts and “evangelists.” You have no choice but to be yourself on purpose when you talk about the things you love and that are important to you.

HoW does apply this networking events? The BIGGEST mistake most new graduates make at

networking events is that they become someone else on purpose. When they approach an exhibitor’s booth they try to impress them with inflated credentials and hyped experience rather than being themselves on purpose and selling their potential.

As a new graduate hiring managers don’t expect you to have management experience or industry knowledge. They are looking for leadership potential and someone they can teach about their company and industry.

2013 Science & Engineering 21

H e r e ’ s h o w i t w o r k s :

TrYINg to be the person you “think” the hiring manager is looking for will only steal your passion and confidence. You only have 30 – 60 seconds to make an impression and the

best way to do that is be the “perfect” investment for a company by exuding confidence by being yourself on purpose and connecting to your passion and purpose.

The most effective way you can be yourself on purpose and impress a hiring managers at a tradeshow is to talk to them about why you chose to go into their industry (passion) and what you intend to do once you are there (purpose) in 60 seconds or less.

DON’T

DON’T

DON’T

talk about how creative you are.

talk about your potential to learn and grow within the company.

say you can bring a lot of good ideas to the company, that you see yourself as a leader.

Here’s what the hiring manager hears: “I don’t have any industry experience but I want to be a manager and change the way you do things.

Now the hiring manager hears: “I know I don’t have a lot of experience but I am willing to learn and grow with your company and when I am ready I’d like to be considered for a management position.”

H e r e i s h o w y o u s h o u l d a p p r o a c h y o u r c o n v e r s a t i o n :

T h a t i s h o w y o u s e l l y o u r p o t e n t i a l .

“I have done a lot of research on your company and as a new graduate I am excited to join a large corporate company so I can learn your systems and procedures and how to do things the right way. I really love this industry and I believe that once I learn how you do things I’ll be someone you consider for a management role in the next 2-3 years.“

BEINg yourself on purpose as a new graduate means educating hiring managers about you, not twisting who you are to fit what you think they want. It means be enthusiastic

about why you are entering the industry and why they should invest in you long term. It means being your own “evangelist” and letting them know just how great you will be once you know how they do business. So walk up to that booth and let them know about how amazing an investment you really are by selling them your potential.

This article will explore three social networking sites and show you how they can apply directly to your job search. Digital networking is on the rise and employers are listening to what you say.

The reality of this job market is recruiters are increasingly using social media in their recruitment. Not only is social media used to find new talent, it is also being used to make important hiring decisions and judgement calls on who you are as a person. Your online persona is being searched and critiqued.

A whooping 92% of employers are using social media to recruit new talent, the majority of these employers use LinkedIn (93%). Approximately two out of three companies

use Facebook to recruit new employees and more than half of these employers (54%) are using Twitter to find new talent. No longer is a resume and cover letter seen as enough. Students are now expected to have a professional online presence.

Using these and other social networking sites will bring value to your job search. Take time to find the best combination to suit your needs. Pick a couple and execute them well.

“92% of employers are using social media to recruit new talent”

LinkedInLinkedIn is one of the fastest growing social networking sites. Some companies have moved to recruiting solely through LinkedIn. It is an ideal place to follow-up and connect with your professors, colleagues and mentors.

How: Creating a profile is free and easy. LinkedIn offers great videos for new grads on everything from creating an effective profile to how to use the advanced search.

How: Creating a profile is free. Connecting it to your smart phone, maintaining your profile through list usages and building your network will earn you more klout.

How: Create a profile & get creative. Think of it as multiple bulletin boards showcasing & collecting visual content. Link it to your other social media sites and maintain your boards.

Why: LinkedIn is the top professional business-networking site. Learning to use it properly will increase your chance of career success. Connect, follow-up and maintain your professional networks through LinkedIn.

Why: Be seen as a passionate, engaged individual in topics that matter to you and your future career. Companies are increasingly finding and recruiting new talent through this media.

Why: Showcase your portfolio through engaging photos. Allow employers and potential recruiters to see your work and share it with others.

What: Professional social networking site with 225+ million members.

What: Social networking site that allows you to connect and build rapport with people who share similar interests.

What: Pinterest is a social networking site where people pin, share, like and follow other users content.

PinterestPinterest is one of the fastest growing social networking sites. It is often not thought of as a place to assist you in job seeking – but listen up! For artists, graphic designers, hair stylists and artisans this is the ideal place to mar-ket yourself and your work. The usage of images, captions and linking websites is unique to Pinterest and can be leveraged to gain popularity, increase site traffic and exposure.

TwitterTwitter allows you to connect with people that share similar interests. Follow companies, industry leaders, top researchers, professors and more. This social network is a great place to become informed on particular industries or jobs that interest you and to start on the path of becoming noticed.
