Reviewers say the 2014 Scion xD is a peppy commuter car with a nice price, but rivals offer better fuel economy, roomier cabins and sportier handling.

Test drivers say the 2014 Scion xD darts around town with surprising quickness, but it struggles to climb hills and pass at highway speeds. Reviewers say the xD’s standard five-speed manual transmission makes good use of the engine’s power, but they’re less enthusiastic about the available four-speed automatic, saying it’s not as refined as the transmissions found in rival cars. With either transmission, the xD gets an EPA-estimated 27/33 mpg city/highway, which is low for a subcompact car. Test drivers report that the ride is generally comfy, the steering is responsive and the xD is easy to maneuver in tight spaces, but they point out that the xD isn’t very fun behind the wheel and offers little in the way of driver engagement.

Most subcompacts have basic interiors and the xD is no exception, auto writers note. However they say that finely-grained plastics and quality construction give the cabin a pleasing look. Reviewers find there’s enough headroom in all seats and plenty of legroom in the rear. However, they note that the front seats offer little in the way of legroom and the steering wheel doesn’t telescope, making it difficult for drivers to tailor their position. The xD comes with a six-speaker Pioneer CD audio system with a 6.1-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, an auxiliary jack, a USB port, cruise control, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and keyless entry. A number of dealer-installed accessories are available, including a premium audio system with navigation and a remote engine starter. The xD’s audio and climate controls are clearly labeled and easy to use, reviewers say.
