CANTERBURYPARKSaddle up for high-speed horse racing, larger purses and more

Canterbury Park features some of the most exciting horse racing in the country, with a season of live thoroughbred and quarter horse racing from May

17 through Sept. 14. Now with larger purses, thanks to a cooperative agreement between Canterbury and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, the track schedules post times that are generally Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, racing begins at 1:30 p.m.

Even when the horses aren’t running at Canterbury, the racing continues. Thanks to 500 TVs, Canterbury’s Race Book is home to year-round simulcast wagering from America’s top tracks.

Plus, horse racing is not the only entertainment option at Canterbury. The 18,000-square-foot Canterbury Card Casino features 50 tables with comfortable seating, full bar and menu with table service. A mix of different casino games are available 24 hours a day. Patrons can test their skills at the poker tables or by visiting the casino games room for conventional table games like blackjack.

Shift your vacation into high gear this year at Raceway Park, Minnesota’s fi rst race track, which has been providing family entertainment for 56 years and counting. Raceway Park is home

to NASCAR weekly racing, featuring Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Figure 8, Bombers, Short Trackers and Mini Stocks.

NASCAR estimates that 75 million fans enjoy stock-car racing nationally and it’s easy to see why. The cars are fast and loud, and the racing action is up close and exciting.

TheLandingStep back in time at historical village

History comes alive at The Landing—Minnesota River Heritage Park—in Shakopee. The idyllic wooded setting stretches along the scenic

river valley and brings alive the charm and challenges of life in the 1800s.

Families and history enthusiasts of all ages can step into this historic site, which features re-enactments of the rich diversity of early American life. Your journey will take you from the early days of the fur trade era to a developing village—complete with its shops, homes, church, town hall and railroad depot. During special event days, costumed interpreters are prepared to “spin a yarn,” demonstrate their craft and explain the daily life of the men, women and children who settled in the Minnesota River Valley more than a century ago.

The Landing is open weekends and select holidays, usually mid-March through the end of December, and weekdays all year round. Tour groups may reserve by appointment.

You’re invited to step back in time and experience an uncommon event truly like no other. Plan to attend the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.

The country’s largest Renaissance-themed festival, this rousing event will delightfully engage and entertain you as the festival grounds are transformed into a 16th-century village, complete with hundreds of unique characters. You’re encouraged to dress the part, too!

The authentic village is filled with costumed characters such as peasants, nobles and royal courtiers. On 16 lively stages you’ll fi nd magicians, musicians, comedians, jugglers, mimes and more who entertain the kid in all of us. Plus, cheer on the jousting knights who mount their horses to do battle. And, as mentioned, festival-goers are encouraged to the dress the part as well. So plan your costume now.

The festival marketplace features 275 artisans who display and sell their handcrafted treasures. Demonstrations are given daily by masters of historic skills such as armor making, bronze casting, glass blowing and calligraphy. Additionally, visitors

have more than 150 food choices including the famous roasted turkey drumstick, scotch eggs, soup in a bread bowl and apple dumplings.

Gear up for the great outdoors. Shakopee’s location in the gorgeous Minnesota River Valley attracts a large number of outdoor enthusiasts each year

who bring their bicycles, kayaks, canoes, cross-country skis and more to the region. Who can blame them, given the area’s ample opportunities for fun and adventure on rivers, streams, lakes, wooded areas, hiking trails and parks. Here’s a selected sampling of the area’s outdoor options.

Minnesota Valley National Wildlife RefugeTundra Swans are seen here in the fall. Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets congregate to feed on fi sh. Bald Eagles can also be seen soaring overhead. And these are just a few examples of the wildlife and bird life that can be viewed at the 14,000-acre Refuge, a national wildlife area that is one of the premier areas for birding in Minnesota and is part of the National Audubon’s Minnesota River Valley Birding Trail. The Refuge, strung along 34 miles of the Minnesota River, is an important area for migrating birds. For centuries, waterfowl, songbirds and birds of prey have stopped in the Minnesota River Valley for food, water and rest while on their spring and fall journeys. Established in 1976, the Refuge provides critical habitat for these migrants, and for resident birds and mammals.

The ability to view the return of migrating birds in an urban area is an uncommon and rare opportunity. As the website for this wildlife area states, “The refuge ranges from urban to rural, providing a unique opportunity to enjoy wildlife related recreation in the shadows of skyscrapers and grain elevators. The refuge provides valuable habitat for a diversity of waterfowl and other migratory birds, fi sh and resident wildlife. It’s a place where coyotes, bald eagles, prothonotary warblers, and trout live next door to more than three million people.”

The Refuge provides parklands and hiking trails for wildlife viewing and photography. It also provides a variety of volunteer guided bird hikes and nature walks on all of the Refuge Units. And, it includes three photo blinds in the southwest metro.

Near Shakopee specifi cally, you’ll fi nd the Louisville Swamp Unit, which includes 13 miles of trails among this marshland that are great for hiking and cross-country skiing. The parking lot for this Unit is near the parking area for the Minnesota Renaissance Festival grounds, which are just south of Shakopee and just off Highway 169.

Minnesota Valley State Recreation AreaAre you looking for an area with trails that are ideal for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking and snowmobiling, and a place that is just minutes from Shakopee? Then visit the state-managed Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area that’s just off Highway 169 near Belle Plaine, and the multi-use Minnesota Valley Trail, which parallels the Minnesota River. The section of trail from Shakopee to Chaska is paved and a natural-surface trail runs from Chaska to Belle Plaine.

In spring, summer and fall, the park has 41 miles of hiking trails, six miles of surfaced bike trails, 29 miles of mountain bike trails and 29 miles of horse trails. In the winter, the park has fi ve miles of ungroomed cross-country ski trails and 35 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Snowshoeing and dog sledding are also permitted. You can also plan to camp in the park.

Shakopee: Parks and Open SpacesVisit Shakopee and you’ll fi nd plenty of inviting outdoor space for biking, hiking, walking or just getting out and stretching and enjoying the greenery. The city’s considerable park, open space and trail system includes 11 parks, with nearly 500 acres of developed park land; about 250 additional acres of undeveloped park land and open space; and more than 10 miles of recreation and transportation trails. Visitors get the best of both worlds here: ample park, wooded and open areas to explore, along with the convenience and creature comforts of a city nearby.

Archery Park and Boat LaunchThe City of Shakopee provides a boat launch and the Shakopee Archery Park on County Road 101 just north of the Minnesota River. The Archery Park is a joint project with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota River Valley Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association and the City of Shakopee.

Three Rivers Park DistrictStill more outdoor adventures can be found in a number of other nearby parks and trails. Many of these parks and trails that visitors enjoy in the Shakopee area are a part of the Three Rivers Park District. The district manages nearly 27,000 acres of park reserves, regional parks, regional trails and special-use facilities. With facilities for every

season, including picnicking, swimming, play areas, boating, fi shing, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, golfi ng, camping, and sledding, Three Rivers Parks is the place for recreation, play and relaxation. SnowmobilingThe area also hosts plenty of trails for snowmobiling. Indeed, you’ll fi nd more than 200 miles of snowmobile trails in Scott County. A local snowmobile club, the River Valley Trail Blazers, is active in helping to maintain those trails and also in providing a “Park and Ride” service for snowmobilers in the northwest corner of the Canterbury Park parking lot. The club also usually sponsors several snowmobile trips and weekly rides during the season.

Spend the day traveling back in time at one of the area’s history museums.

The Scott County Historical Society’s Stans Museum features an always changing array of exhibits that look at the people and places of Scott County. Visit the boyhood home of Maurice Stans, a national political fi gure who served under President Nixon during the Watergate era. Head over to Waconia to explore the five-gallery exhibits of the Carver County Historical Society. The society hosts a number of family events, education programs and is home to a research library, too.

Heritage, culture celebrated at annual Pow WowEvery August, the artistry and skill of hundreds of Native American dancers take center stage at the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Wacipi (Pow Wow).

The th ree -day event brings together dancers in beautiful regalia and singers at the drum, performing the songs of their ancestors a n d c e l e b r a t i n g t h e Dakota culture. Dancers from around the country compete in contests dances at the “Wacipi” (wah-chee-pee), which translates in the Dakota language to “they dance.”
