SALES STAFFRepresentatives from the Gulf Coast Cattleman, Weekly Livestock Reporter, Southern Livestock Standard, Simbrah World and American Simmental Association will be at the sale.

EPDSAll of the EPDs printed in this catalog are the latest available. The average EPDs for the Simbrah breed are as follows:

Ave. EPDs:

CE Bw ww yw MCE MM Mww API TI2.5 3.9 61.5 82.6 6.3 22.3 53.1 65.8 50.5

GLOSSAryAll-purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first–calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replace-ments use API, if not, TI. Then just as with EPDs zero in on the unit difference between the bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. X 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed informa-tion about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

PArTNErSHIP LOTSIn the case of bull partnership lots, the new partner will have first choice to decide what 60 days they will be able to breed the bull. All decisions relating to the posses-sion, showing, promotion, collecting of semen, and marketing will be mutually agreed upon prior to the transaction with both parties dividing all future expenses and net revenue.Female partnership lots will be owned 50/50 with all future production being co-owned. The partner with possession will receive $250 per year for maintenance from the other partner. A partner that is selling their interest must give the other partner the right to match any bona fide guaranteed offer prior to selling their interest to a third party. Contract on these lots will be available on sale day.

MCCrAry FArMS We are proud to mark our 14th year as Sim-brah breeders and we are excited for Synergy VI! Mark and I continue working to improve the quality of our herd, by utilizing the best sire power the Simbrah and Simmental breeds have to offer. Our current herd includes sire genetics of Smith Evan, Smith Nu Approach, NF Smith Sargeant, Smith McCrary Andy, Smith McCrary Matt, Smith Isgrig Charismatic, and our new herd sire out of Matt, McCrary Smith Inspired. We are long time supporters of the junior program, and have been avid supporters and sponsors of many local FFA and 4-H programs. Our place is located in the northeast corner of Texas in the town of De Kalb, just a few miles from the Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana borders near Texarkana. Come see our cattle and our grandchildren. We will soon have four grandchildren as our son, Christopher and wife, Coral are expecting their first child. A special THANKS goes to Tim Smith who has worked so hard to make all of this possible!

TrIPLE J rANCH The Triple J Ranch has been owned by the Tortorice family and has been breeding Simbrah cattle for over 25 years. This year the Triple J has under-gone a few changes. Jake and Amber have taken the reins and the largest part of the registered herd as part of their own operation, Tortorici Ranch. Mary and Jake look forward to more

free time for travel and grandchildren and less responsibility and farm work! We will continue to work together to produce quality animals as a family for years and generations to come. The past few years both our programs have been utilizing more embryo transfer and artificial insemination to capitalize on some of the most powerful animals in the breed. Through the careful guidance of Tim Smith, we have been adding quality genetics to our programs through sire power and proven cow families. The in-fluence of these powerful genetics on our herd has been incredible. We are excited about new females introduced to our program from She Moves, Priceless, Annie Lou, and Tulipe families. We strive to produce gentle, hardy cattle that are structurally correct, made to perform and built to last. Our herd continues to improve with every calf that hits the ground. We are pleased to present a beautiful re-flection of our combined herds to offer at this year’s Synergy Sale. We will have Rao’s coffee and breakfast at the show! Come see us!

TrIPLE P rANCH Once again, it is with great pleasure that Triple “P” Ranch invites everyone to Synergy VI. As we struggle through another dry year, we hope our offerings will fit your program. We continue to improve our herd through some very selective breeding with a strong emphasis on AI and embryo transfer. We feel that we have put together a very appealing set of haltered heifers ready for the show ring, with the pedigrees of the trait-leading Simbrah bulls such as NuWave II

and Ronen to go along with dams, such as Triple “P” Juliet, TSC Moonlight (901N) Sasha (125W) a daughter of Kiya (412L), who is also represented. To go along with this great Simbrah lineup we utilize some of the top Simmental bulls such as Dream On 186L, Grandmaster, Sweet Meat, and Cut Above to bring in new blood in order to keep our breeding program in the forefront of an aggressive and innovative direction of breeding for years to come. As always our ranch door is always open. Stop by or give

us a call to talk cattle or just to “shoot the bull.’ On another note we are VERY PROUD to welcome Rylee Ann Baring to the Baring/Popp clan.

HAGAN CATTLE COMPANy Cattle have always been a part of our lives as we are involved in the registered, commercial and sale barn segments of the beef cattle. Our registered program start-ed as an extension of our boys, Reinhard and Reese’s show projects. Our seed stock program has become synonymous with show ring champions and we believe our offering is our strongest yet, with many candidates headed to the winner’s circle. We are a family operation with Reese heading up the sale and show management for our purebred operation. All three generations of our family want to welcome you to the sale and thank you for your interest in Simbrah.

PINE rIDGE rANCH Pine Ridge is an industry leading genetic ranch whose purpose is to breed the most efficient hot weather cow… with a most acceptable carcass. We are utilizing a breeding formula with over 50 breeding characteristics. During the last 30 years, Pine Ridge has developed a leading hot weather environmental cow with a very valuable carcass. Recently, Pine Ridge has statistically achieved its carcass goal: 100% Choice, 100% YG 1, 2, and 3. We believe that we have eliminated the YG 4, 5 carcass through genetic identification. In addition, the Pine Ridge carcass is very acceptably tender. In the 2012 Illinois Carcass Merit evaluation, calves sired by our bulls, out-performed leading Angus genetics. Visit our web-site for full details on that test. We have no known genetic defects and do not line breed. A broad genetic base has been utilized with frequent introduction of worldwide genetics from fellow Simmental and Simbrah breeders. Internationally known for high quality Sim-brah, Pine Ridge genetics are also found in many foreign countries. Pine Ridge has provided Simbrah calves to junior exhibitors help-ing win the coveted Texas Junior Livestock Association Simbrah Grand Championship for many years. Recently, Pine Ridge junior members have won Reserve Grand Championships at the Syner-gy, Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worth, and Grand Championships at Four States and the State Fair of Texas. Pine Ridge consists of 1,424 acres in Athens, Texas and with over 500 Simbrah for fellow breeders to study and purchase. After 21 ranch sales ending in 2003, we now market by private treaty. Come visit and explore our unique genetic program. www.simbrah.com

SOuTHwESTErN FArMS The Hill family may be new to Simbrah, but they’ve been raising cattle commer-cially since 1972 in deep East Texas, near Kirbyville. The family operation is headed by Ray and Suzanne Hill, along with their two

daughters and their families, Samantha Palmore and Heather Rieve. The Hill’s oldest granddaughter, Savannah earned a Houston Live-stock Show Scramble certificate in 2010 and after some research, they decided to buy a Simbrah. That research led them to Smith Genetics and as they say the rest is history. They made purchases at Synergy IV with Samantha and her husband, Mark and at Synergy V, their purchases included the donors, Oprah, Diva, Rita, Juliet and Black Mystic. They have also added the bull power of RFI Real Deal, Xtra Ordi-nary, Blackfoot and Wiseguy. This year, their granddaughter, Sophie Palmore showed Smith Wentz Diamond Diva to the 2013 National Intermediate Champion title and AJSR Reserve Junior Champion title and they expect their third granddaughter, Stella Rieve to show Simbrahs too. They are thrilled to be a participant in Synergy VI and want to extend a special thanks to Tim Smith for introducing them to the breed and helping them establishing a quality herd based on some of the most elite genetics in the breed.

LA MuNECA CATTLE CO. Welcome to Synergy VI, a great Simbrah event that features qual-ity cattle, a phenomenal junior program and some really nice folks. We created MAS, which is what SYNERGY is patterned after in an ef-fort to unite Simbrah breeders to grow the breed. In just eight years there has been over $244,000 in premiums awarded to Simbrah juniors, over $5.5 million worth of Simbrahs sold and many new breeders established at these 13 events. La Muneca Cattle Co. is owned by the Carlos and Sister Guerra family. We raise registered Simbrahs, Braunviehs, Polled Brahman and are creating a new breed called Simbravieh. Having been raised on a commercial cattle ranch provided us with the basics of producing no nonsense, easy keeping, functional, gentle cattle with plenty of muscle and structural soundness. Having been in the registered business since 1963 has taught us the importance of pedigrees, performance, promotion and people. We love working with juniors and are proud of our junior pro-gram considered the most supportive in the country. Our LMC sponsored junior shows will offer $100,000 in premiums this next show year. Due to us cutting our numbers due to the worst drought in our lifetime, we have no cattle selling in Synergy this year, but do have some great spring born Simbrah, Simbravieh and polled Brahman heifers for sale plus a really good set of fall calving Sim-bravieh cows. Please check out our website at www.lamunecacattle.com. THANKS for supporting SYNERGY V1 and Simbrah - The World’s Breed. Visitors are always WELCOME at La Muneca.

NIESCHwIETz 7N rANCH Our roots in the Simmen-tal/Simbrah breeds trace back to 1977, when dad purchased Simmie heifers for us to show and then in 1978 we added some Sim-brah heifers. Mom and dad continued buying heifers for all five kids and one grandson to show and along the way we built a herd. We realized early on that Simbrah cattle excelled in South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley, as we have locations in Falls City and Donna, Texas, where we are also involved in produce farming. 7N Ranch feels youth is important to the success of the breed and we support the youth programs of Karnes County and the Valley, as well as the Simbrah breed. In the past few years, we have really stepped up our program by selecting females that carry some of the most proven lines in the breed and our bull power consists of Simply Great, Smooth Oper-ator, LMC Gumbo, and LMC WFC Wave Amigo. We are proud to be part of Synergy and want to thank Tim Smith for all he does for the Simbrah breed and the guidance he has provided our program.

BETM rANCH We would like to welcome you all to Synergy VI! We are excited about this year’s offering and look forward to seeing the juniors compete in the $15,000 Showcase. Thus far it has been a

big year for BETM Ranch, as we had the National Champion Bull with LMC Gold Medal, topped the LMC $ellabration Sale with LMC Redream and raised the Grand Champion Female at the MAS VIII Showdown LMC Daydream. We also had one of our best calf crops to date, which includes calves by our 2011 National Champi-on Bull LMC Arcadio, two black full brothers to 6G/LMC Pappa-deaux and several other exciting prospects. BETM Ranch extends a BIG HEARTY THANKS to all of our buyers thus far in 2013. We have a unique offering this year in Synergy VI, beginning with two daughters of the elite donor LM She Moves sired by LMC Johnnie Walker and Spectrum. These two young females sell ex-posed to our new junior herdsire, Mr. BETM Cyclone. We are also offering two promising show prospects sired by the 2011 National Champion Bull, LMC Arcadio which are eligible for the BETM and LMC Jr. Program Shows. This may be our best set of sale cattle to date in terms of pedigree as several breed greats are represented in our offering, including LMC ATZ Dr. Feelgood, JBA MS Roshanda and LM Rob’s Muneca 3E/89. We want to thank our sale host, Tim Smith for having us once again at his ranch and appreciate all he does for Simbrah. If you have any questions or you are ever in the San Antonio area, give our herdsman Ted Tschirhart a call at 210-827-7949 and come see our stock at work in scenic Castroville, Texas. We appreciate your interest in our stock and look forward to visiting with you at Synergy VI.

BArING CATTLE COMPANyAll of us at Baring Cattle Company want to welcome you to Synergy VI and all the activities associ-ated with this event. Our family has deep roots in agriculture and we are proud to be the fourth and fifth generations to ranch in Texas. We are pleased with the cattle we have assembled in our herd and the predictability we are producing. We are located just outside of San Antonio, Texas at Elmendorf and we would love to have you visit us when you’re in the Alamo City.

BurCH FArMSWe are proud to be a member of Synergy. We hope you will be able to join us for a premier Simbrah event. Our lots this year, are some of our best and we really hate to part with them. The last few years have been really challenging to be in the cattle business with the continued drought. We are continuing to improve our genetics and concentrating on our donor program. Martha and I look forward to seeing you at Synergy V1.

rEAvIS FArMSWe are a diversified family operation with Simbrahs, cotton, grain sorghum, onions and watermelons. We have been involved with Simbrahs since 1987 and are still excited about the breed. We have our best calves, yet, on the ground from

sires including Charismatic, Nu Wave II, Sargeant,Smith Evan, RFI Thunderstruck and Smith Also N Red. We continue to add donor power to our home raised RFI Smith Tinkerbell, the 2009 San Antonio Grand Champion and the 2009 AJSR Champion. Recent Reavis standouts include RFI Ritzy, the 2011 National Champion Female for Winston Walters; RFI Smith Fresh Approach, the 2011 National Reserve Grand Champion Female; RFI Real Deal, the 2013 National Reserve Bull Calf Champion. We are very proud of our offering for Synergy V1 and extend and invitation to you to the fall event of the breed.

DIAMOND rF FArMS Diamond RF Farms has come a long way in a short period of time. With this being our fifth year as a Synergy Participant we have brought, what we feel is an “All-Star” line up of Simbrah genetics to this Simbrah Synergy Sale. For 12 years now, we have been working on developing a phenomenal herd of Simgenetics, breeding our quality dams with some of the top bulls. Over the years we have introduced the genetics of elite sires such as Nu Wave II, Red Moves, Smith Foster Automatic. This year we purchased interest in a new bull for 2013 breeding season, RFI Real Deal. We chose Real Deal for his unparalleled pedigree and unique traits of balance, structural correctness and eye appeal. We look forward to his impact on the breed for years to come, and are anxious to see his first calf crop arriving next March. Please give us a call or visit with us at Synergy, as we welcome your interest in our program. Additionally, we would like to THANK all of you who have purchased our genetics and we look forward to seeing you at Synergy.

SMITH FArMSRonnie Smith’s love for Simgenetics can be traced back to Simmental’s arrival in the U.S. He built a Sim-mental herd and was also a breeder of Brahmentals, which was the original name of today’s Simbrahs. In addition, for more than

10 years, he was involved with SimAngus genetics in New Mexico. Today, he and his wife, Susan are focusing their efforts on raising Simbrahs. Their herd sire battery is anchored by two breed greats, Smith Nu Wave II and Sargeant. Both of these bulls are top ranking EPD bulls in the Simbrah breed and have claimed the number one or number two ranking overall for the past three years. Females lining their embryo transfer program include a LMC She Moves daughter, as well as the 2011 Houston Junior Show Reserve Grand Champion Female. Smith Farms has also purchased embryos from the Smith Bella Bella cow that won every major and junior show in Texas and a flush in the great Diva, the dam of Dream Girl, who also won the purple at all the Texas shows. In addition, they are maintaining an elite herd of ¼ x ¾ foundation females for the purpose of outcrossing new bloodlines into their Simbrah herd. They have consigned a select number of these percentage females to Synergy VI. Ronnie and Susan are excited to be part of Synergy and invite you to visit their program at www.smithfarmsdentontx.com or come to the ranch, outside of Denton, Texas, just 35 miles north of Fort Worth.

SMITH GENETICS I want to thank everyone for your involvement in Synergy. The success of events I, II, III, IV and V were over-whelming and it drives Smith Genetics to raise the bar on quality in Synergy VI’s offering. Smith Genetics includes Simbrah, Simmental and a registered horse division in my home state of Kentucky. We have developed a number of elite cow families and we are proud to be the breeders of the following sires, who are being utilized heavily in this breed: Smith Nu Wave I and II, Sargeant, Charismatic, Evan, Nu Approach, Satisfies, Xtra Ordinary Ronen, Andy, Matt and William. Our cattle have been very well received this year in the show ring, with many major wins, includ-ing the first time a Simbrah, Smith Charming Moves was named the Supreme American Champion at the Houston Junior Show. This event happens because of the hard work of a lot of people, quality cattle from the participants and the attendance and support of buyers and junior exhibitors. We are thankful to each for your part and we are proud to host Synergy. Here’s a big welcome to the event and to Smith Genetics.

We appreciate the support of Simbrah breeders.

Take a good look at this powerful 3/4 heifer. One cannot help but admire her overall eye appeal. Her powerful structure starts with her sire, Sweet-meat, who sold for $20,000 to Hart Farms in South Dakota, who goes back to Dream On L186, one of the most recognized bulls in the Simmental breed. Her dam is Triple P Miss Sasha 125W, who was successfully shown by Bailey Gremmel. 125W is a full sister to Triple P Juliet, who sold to Southwestern Farms for $26,000 in last year’s Synergy Sale. This heifer is halter broke and ready to go to the show ring and after that will make a great addition to anyone’s breeding program.

It is really hard to describe this heifer with mere words. She is very attrac-tive, clean-fronted, with a strong topline and great volume. When you take a look at her pedigree things really get exciting. On the top side, you have NuWave II, one of the most powerful and popular bulls in the breed. He is a trait leader in most all EPD categories. In Synergy IV, a semen package of NuWave II sold for $13,500. Selling 2 grade # 1 embryos with a guarantee of 2 pregnancies, only if the work is done at Smith Genetics, Giddings Texas. We are committed to only offering our best at Synergy and this lot is without a doubt one of the best we have. The 584U cow stems back to the Annie Lou cow family, which is deeply rooted in the Smith Genetics herd, and undoubtedly one of the most maternal line of genetics still in production today. The Annie Lou line of genetics is known for producing females such as Smith Look at Me, and Smith Phenomenal, both of which are making their mark on the Simbrah breed one flush at a time. Uniquely enough, 584U is sired by a past international champion Red Ammo, who is a maternal brother to Kaleb Fontenot’s dominating female Smith Charming Moves, the 2013 National and International Champions, as well as Houston Junior Show Supreme American Heifer. RFI Real Deal is a new bull just springing into action after the 2013 show season, but has become quite the ladies man from what I hear. Real Deal is in production for some of the top programs is the breed, they chose to utilize his unparalleled pedigree and performance to elevate their cow herd and increase their bottom dollar. Real Deal’s pedigree is a combination of maternal greats Bella Bella and the deceased Triple C She’s Amazing, as well as the show dominating sires of Sargeant, and Nu Approach. I’m extremely excited about this mating of 584U and Real Deal, it’s hard to say exactly what one should expect, but after studying both pedigrees and phenotypes, I’d say either bull or heifer you won’t be disappointed.

It’s not everyday an 8-year-old cow can walk into a picture pen and look this impressive, especially after weaning a heifer calf two months earlier. Vivian has been a family favorite since the day we purchased her from the Van Meters in Georgia, six years ago. Vivian is sired by Black Joker, one of the most popular bulls ever in the Simmental breed. Vivian has been flushed three times in the last year to three different bulls and produced a total of 81 grade #1 embryos, that’s an average of 27 embryos per flush. It’s hard to find a three-quarter cow with this much power and body, yet maintains this in an elegant sound structured package. Come sale day, it’s going to be hard to let go of a female, who’s impact is just starting to influence our program, but rest assured we will be implanting those embryos each chance we get. The possibilities are endless with a female of this quality and caliber. Come see her on sale day, I promise you won’t be disappointed. Vivian sells open and is ready to continue producing embryos for her new owners. Three units of semen on any bull owned by Diamond RF will be provided for a flush on this great female. It’s not everyday you get an opportunity to buy a past State Futurity and MAS Champion female, but when you’re committed to providing your customers the best, this is the caliber of cattle they expect. Prissy is a stunning red baldy female that commanded the attention of many show attendees throughout her career, as she dazzled them with her capacity, and femininity while being nearly flawless when set into motion. Prissy hails from the Diamond Muneca cow family making her a full sister to Red Infatuation, and a maternal sister to past MAS and Synergy high selling percentage heifers now in production at Reavis Farms, and La Blanquita. Last year Pine Ridge capitalized on a bred female we offered out of Nu Approach X Prissy, and the last report we heard that cow laid down and had a stunning red heifer that is now in the show barn for the Mullins family. Prissy sells Al’d to RFI Real Deal, a mating we feel should offer her new owners an opportunity at an outstanding calf that’s on the cutting edge of genetic progress.

Quite simply put Red Infatuation is the “right kind,” maternally and built from the ground up, just like the good ones are. This heifer will make an outstanding breeding piece and a great show heifer. Red Infatuation has a pedigree that is stacked with champion females, past high sellers, and quality cattle. Red Infatuation is sired by the most popular full brother to She Moves, LMC Red Moves. Her mother is full sister to past LMC great sire Full House, and was a past Champion of mine that captured the senior division title at both the San Antonio and HLSR open shows, with her first heifer calf at side. That was the first Simbrah cow I had that went into production and is ultimately the reason my family is in the Simbrah business. Diamond Muneca generated lots of publicity and dollars for my family before retiring to the pastures of LMC. Since put into production, that cow generated a Houston Division Champion, the 2009 State Futurity Champion, and two percentage heifers that topped both MAS and Synergy sales in different years. Red Infatuation upholds the family tradition of being big bodied, stout featured, sound structured and feminine fronted. Just like her two full sisters, all she needs is a little TLC and it’s just a matter of time before the dollars start to rack up. Diamond RF will provide two units of semen on any of our sires to breed her to, those include; Smith Foster Automatic, and RFI Real Deal.

Come sale day this heifer will make her fair share of friends, wheth-er it’s her nearly fault free design, or her calm, laid back attitude. This one has been my dad’s favorite since she was a week old, and it looks like once again he might be on the right track. This February heifer will turn some heads come next spring, and for good reason. She’s a unique female that is the result of combining some of the best La Muneca genetics with some of the best from Smith Genet-ics. If I remember correctly, there were two dominating females with a similar pedigree combinations LMC Dream Girl, and Smith Charming Moves. This beautiful black baldie is sired by a Nu Wave II son, who we raised from an embryo purchase we made in a past Synergy sale. His pedigree stems back to the Aggie cow family and is known for producing a full sister and past San Antonio champion female Smith Addie, campaigned by McCrary Farms. Maternally speaking Black Lavender is the direct offspring of one of the most recognized cow families in the breed, She Moves 136L. Her dam She Moves U, is a black full sister to She Moves. We were fortunate enough to purchase a set of embryos years ago that would result in the production of a very rare and unique black sister to She Moves. Black Lavender is just that, smooth and feminine in her design and sound enough to make the Supreme drive come San Antonio time. Come sale day it’s going to be hard to keep my dad from buying her back, but this girl is destined for the big stage and someone’s going to be one step closer to making their dreams a reality.

These two powerful embryo litter mates are the first daughters out of our young donor Hot Flash. We feel that these two females have tremendous show appeal and donor potential. At RFI our number one emphasis is on maternal strength. It is this maternal emphasis that has enabled us to survive this drought and still maintain the pregnancy rates and weaning weights that we would expect under normal conditions. These Sargeant heifers were bred with that in mind. Their dam, Hot Flash was Reserve Calf Champion at Houston in 2010 and Junior Champion at the National Show in San Antonio in 2011. These two females have the same spring of rib, volume and ease of movement as their dam. Evaluate these females and judge for yourself. Two units of semen from any RFI herd bull are available for the heifer selected for future use. Selling buyer’s choice.

The fact that this young sire is out of two black parents and is red indi-cates that he is a non diluter and will not throw dilution genes in his calf crop – added value! His EPDs are breed leading with an API ranking in top 3% and TI ranking in top 1%. SOUTHERN LIVESTOCK STANDARD

Brought to you by American Simbrah Breeders

Simbrah meets the challengesBy Martha Hollida Garrett

Regardless of the size ofthe operation, Simbrahbulls are proving theirworth in pastures acrossthe southern half of theUnited States and helpingprograms meet the chal-lenges of producing beef.

Paul Estes and CliffMarshall are in two differ-ent geographic areas of theSouthwest and run twovery different types ofoperations. Estes is a full-time cattleman, runninglots of cattle in big countryand Marshall is a weekendrancher with a fulltime jobin a major Texas city, run-ning a small group of cattleon limited acreage. Bothuse Simbrah bulls. Bothlike the results they are get-ting and how the breed hasresponded to their individ-ual challenges.

The Estes family hasbeen running commercialcattle on the Texas/Oklahoma line since 1897.The family has cattle onboth sides of state line, andclaim both Wellington,Texas and Hollis, Okla-homa as home. In 1980, hisdad, Bill, added a smallSimmental herd; then in1985, they purchased a one-

quarter Simmental x three-quarter Brahman bull fromthe R.A. Brown Ranch andbegan breeding up toSimbrah.

Today their cattle pro-gram includes 200 commer-cial Simbrah females and50 commercial FleckviehSimmentals. The droughthas been hard in the TexasP a n h a n d l e / S o u t h w e s tOklahoma and their cur-rent numbers are abouthalf of previous stockingrates. They continue to uti-lize Simbrah bulls on theherd and retain ownershipof the calves through har-vest.

“We tried other breeds, but we like the addedweight from the Simmentalside and need the Brahmaninfluence in our females forthe maximum hybrid vigor. She is a good mother, milksstrong, her calves grow fast, require less maintenancesince they are insect anddisease resistant and theyforage well. I’m in love withthe Simbrah cow and shehas treated our familyoperation well,” describesEstes, who is 1985 TexasTech graduate with adegree in animal science.

The mature cowherd is

mated to almost exclusive-ly Simbrah bulls, as theyhave purchased a fewSimmental bulls fromBuzzard Hollow Ranch,Arnold Brothers and R.A.Brown. Their Simbrahbulls over the years havebeen purchased from RXSimbrah Ranch, La Mu-neca Cattle Co. and mostrecently Pine Ridge Ranch. They have purchased somegroups of heifers at varioustimes, but they raise themajority of their replace-ment heifers and they mateall virgin heifers to RedAngus bulls, although noneof those resulting femalesare retained.

Estes knows exactlywhat he wants in a bullwhen he goes to make hisselections.

“I look at birth weightand calving ease first. Youdon’t need calving prob-lems in this country and wedon’t have time for them.I’ve found most breedersare doing a really good jobwith weaning and yearlingweights, so my next con-cern is carcass quality andmarbling. We own ourcalves all the way to thepacker, so carcass is criti-cal,” he explains.

They calve in Februaryand March and wean theircalves in October andNovember. Their femalesare expected to cover a lotof ground, as with thedrought the running capac-ity is now close to one cowto 40 acres. They expecttheir cows to calve on theirown, take care of them-selves and the calf, andwean that calf at above50% of their matureweight, regardless of theconditions.

The Estes family back-grounds their calves for 30-45 days post weaning andthen all the steer calves andthe remaining heifers aresent to Cattle TownFeeders, Hereford, Texas.

“We retain ownershipon all our calves and we uti-lize the data we get back. Our calves over the yearshave done real well, as over90% are YG 1’s and 2’s,with quality grades pre-dominately Choice andHigh Select and our feedconversion rate is routinelysome of the best in eachfeeding period. Our cost ofgain on the Simbrah calvesis 10-15 cents less a poundthan the industry average,”says Estes.

Carcass improvementhas been a key focus in thelast few years.

“Over the past six years,we’ve added five bulls fromPine Ridge Ranch’s pro-

gram, as they are veryinvolved in identifying car-cass traits in their regis-tered Simbrahs,” saysEstes.

The Estes family todayincludes four generationsof the family, Paul and hiswife, Amy, along with hisparents, Bill and Alcie, andhis grandmother PauleneEstes. Then Paul and Amyhave three children, who allgrew up on the ranch andwere active in 4-H andFFA. Their oldest son, Bengraduated from Texas Techwith an animal sciencedegree and was a memberof Tech’s National Cham-pion Meats Judging Team.

He then graduated fromOklahoma State Univer-sity’s Veterinary MedicineSchool this past May. Hepractices in Hollis, Okla-homa and is very involvedin the family ranch. Theirdaughter, Lucy also a grad-uate of Texas Tech, recent-ly married Cole Brown andis finishing her clinicalwork for a masters inspeech therapy from WestTexas A&M. She and Coleplan on staying involvedwith Simbrahs and theranch. Their youngest son,Will, a senior this fall atHollis High School, alsohas future plans for

The Estes family have been in the cattle business since 1897 and today includes four generations: (L to R):Alcie and Bill Estes, Lucy Estes Brown and her husband Cole Brown, Amy and Paul Estes, Will Estes, SaraSettlemire, who is the finance’ of Ben Estes. Seated in front is Paulene Estes.

Cliff Marshall along with his daughter, Kristin at the family’s operationnear Giddings, Texas.

The Estes family retains ownership on all their Simbrah sired calves and has for many years. Their datareflects that over 90% have graded YG 1’s and 2’s, with quality grades predominately Choice and HighSelect. These Simbrah calves were photographed in early August at Cattle Town Feeders.

This heifer has a bright show career with an even more powerful cow career where she can outproduce herself! This heifer will win her share of the MAS, Showcase, Superbowl and Elite premiums that will be offered over her show career. Don’t miss this breeding piece!

This black baldy moves like a cat, she’s long spined, classy as can be and she’s just the kind to head straight to the donor pen following a successful show experience. Her sire is Smith Bella Xtra Stretch sired by Sargeant and out of the breed giant, Bella Bella. Xtra Stretch passes on his legacy of length of side to his progeny and it is evidenced in this heifer. She qualifies for the ARB show at San Antonio with the $10,000 coveted scholarship in addition to the Superbowl, Showcase, Elite, and MAS events. This lot should have a big asterisk next to it with a note “Must Buy” if you are looking for top end percentage females to build a herd around!

This young bull calf has turned heads when seen by visitors – they appreciate his muscle structure, base width and super clean appearance. This calf is out of Carlye Rodenbeck’s last year show heifer, Inspiration, that is a full sister to Lot 103 that we are selling embryos out of. This Irreplaceable cow family lineage will go down in the books as one of the all time greats. This young prospect gives you the chance to add the Irreplaceable lineage to your calf crop and in turn add built in marketability, not to mention milk and fertility.

Selling 20 units of semen as one package! His name and picture say it all “STOUT”! This Dream On son has generated lots of excitement around Smith Genetics, as vis-itors admire the structure and amount of muscle on this young bull. We are anxious to see his calves because we have used him to moderate some of our larger framed Simmy and Simbrah cows – yes we think his ¾ calves will be just as valuable as his Simmy calves. Study his pedigree that not only has Dream On, but maternally he has Power Drive, the bull that wrote the history books for former Triple C Farms – his breed champions are to numerous to mention. Stout’s EPDs are ranked in the top 10% for API and TI in the Simmental herdbooks, which means he can really change some Simbrah numbers in one generation! Stout is a full brother to the Smith Also N Red bull that produced some tremendous ¾ cows in the Reavis herd. No matter how you use him- on Simmentals or Simbrahs- we think Stout’s calves will have great market demand! I repeat his name says it all “STOUT”!

Members of the Petunia cow family are recognized for having great fertility and pro-ducing lots of milk. This cow has been utilized to produce both foundation Simbrah as you see with her halfblood heifer calf at side as well as Simmental evidenced by her Matt daughter selling as Lot 141. Cows of this quality have lots of versatility. Cow sells bred to RFI Real Deal on 8/10/13 to produce a ¾ x ¼ calf. 89T’s sire, Vintage, is a full brother to WLE Power Stroke, who is the sire to over 1,000 registered Simmen-tal including leading AI sire breed greats Trademark and Power Drive. Petunia, her dam has served as a donor in our joint ownership program for several years following her San Antonio Grand Championship when being campaigned by Reese Hagan.
