DESCRIPTION

After Convocation each year a series of regional reports are produced which are customized to regions across northern BC. These reports celebrate local grads, award winners, research activities, and other stories relevant to the area. Reports designed for communities with or close to UNBC's regional campuses also feature listings of upcoming local courses.

UNBC 2013Year in Review

UNBC has had another fruitful year full of faculty, student, and research success.

• UNBC Forestry Professor Kathy Lewis was named Academic of the Year by the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC – the second UNBC professor in a row to receive the honour after Dr. Chris Opio received the distinction last year.

• UNBC‘s Dezene Huber, who was part of the inter-university effort which attracted international headlines this year by successfully decoding the genome of the mountain pine beetle.

• UNBC’s soccer and basketball teams played their first-ever matches in the Canada West conference of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), the highest level of amateur sport in the country.

• UNBC Environmental Engineering student Stephanie Doherty was awarded one of only ten 3M National Student Fellowships this year after two UNBC students took home the honour last year in the Award’s inaugural year. Only days before, Doherty was part of the UNBC engineering team that took home a top prize at the national Canadian Engineering Competition in Ottawa.

• UNBC tied its highest position ever in Maclean’s Magazine’s annual university rankings, placing second in the primarily undergraduate category, and retaining its spot as “best in the west” for the eighth straight year.

UNBC names recipient of Northern Exposure Award Lukas Bosch, a Grade 12 graduate from Regina, Saskatchewan, will be UNBC’s Campus Correspondent for the 2013/2014 academic year. The Northern Exposure Award recipient will use a number of social media tools, including a blog, facebook and video, to document the student experience at UNBC from his unique perspective as a first-year student.
