A NNAPOLIS ROYA L PARA DE ANDDEDICATION

Following the closure of the GrandCommunication many masons remained in theAnnapol i s Val ley to ce lebrate the 275 th

An niversa ry of Freemaso nr y in Canada byparticipating at the dedication of the replica ofthe 1606 Masonic Stone .

The Masons paraded to the grounds ofFort Anne where the Grand Chaplain, RWBro.Sandy Buchan and the Rev. Catherine Delogesheld divine services. After the service the paradeof masonic flags preceeded by a pipe band led theGrand Master and masonic guests to the townhall where the stone was dedicated. Welcomingremarks were given by VWBro. Keith Saunders,DGC of Annapolis District. His Worship the

Mayor of Annapolis Royal, Michael Tompkins ,brought greetings from the town after which theGrand Chaplain dedicated the stone with thefollowing prayer: Great Architect of the Universe, wegathe r here to day and hum bl y crave you rpresence and blessing as we dedicate this stone asa memorial to the memory of the early buildersand masons who laboured so diligently to carveout of the rough wilderness the foundations forthe building of a great nation. Through theefforts of these early settlers we find our

inspiration to conduct our work as Freemasonswith the same fervency and zeal as we labour tobuild throughout the world a nation of BrotherlyLove, Understanding and Happiness. We asspeculative Masons have no less a duty to thefuture than did those operatives of former timeswho struggled to erect those great edifices of thepast. We ask that as we dedicate this stonewhi ch wi l l s t and to mark 275 year s o fFreemasonry in Canada, that our continuedworks may meet with Your approval. We ask alsofor Your guidance as we labour with the workingtools of our Fraternity to transform those roughashlars of human nature into perfect ashlarssuitable to adorn and beautify that edifice webuild within ourselves. Almighty God, creator of al l things, source of all light, humbly and reverently wecome to you to dedicate this stone to your

service. Pour down your mercies to Your servantsengaged in this solemn ceremony of this day.Bless we pray all those engaged in the dedicationof this edifice. May our present gathering awakenserious reflections and strengthen us withresolutions for the future. May we be boundtogether stronger by the bonds of Brotherly loveand a$ection. May all we do and say here reflectto Thy honour and glory. May we ever beconscious of our closeness to You, and may ourservice be ever acceptable in Your sight, andwhen the shadows lengthen, and the eveningcomes, and the busy world is hushed, and thefever of our life is ended, and our work on earthis done, then of Your tender mercy grant us andall Masons wherever they may be, a safe lodging,a holy rest, and peace in Your vast forever.

Remarks were then heard from RWBro.Holger Mueller#Sparenburg, Master of AnnapolisNo.33 who was dressed in the costume of the1700s. The MWTGM, MWBro. George Grantthen spoke to the assembly, after which the Rev.Catherine Desloges gave the benediction. The parade then followed the pipe bandto the local Legion hall for a wonderful pig roastand a celebratory cake.

    THE BEGINNINGS OF FREEMASONRY INCANADA

Most of us know snippets of the history of theoriginal colonies, their failures and successes, andof course the major event, which we Loyalistsrefer to as the American Rebellion. Since 1775 there has been a divergence ofdevelopment. There are cultural and politicaldi$erences and each nation has taken its ownpath, but what is often forgotten is that weoriginally had a shared heritage, we were onepeople clustered along the north east coast of anew continent. But there were obviously otherinhabitants; the French, Spanish and Dutch, notto forget the indigenous peoples.

Now for some dates and a quick history

lesson: In 1700 the area now known as NovaScotia was called Acadia and was in possession ofthe French. Approximately 1,400 Acadians, mostly farmers, lived in widely dispersed farmsstretching from Port Royal to Minas and acrossthe Chignecto peninsula in Beaubassin. 1702brought the War of the Spanish Succession toNorth America where it was known as QueenAnnes War. 1707 saw two expeditions fromMassachusetts to push the French from Port

Royal but both failed. Finally in 1710 the Englishtook Port Royal renaming it Annapolis Royal inhonour of Queen Anne, the last of the Stuartmonarchs. With the Treaty of Utrecht Acadia wasceded to Great Britain, which had come intoexistence by the Act of Union in 1707, as well asNewfoundland, Hudson Bay, and the country ofthe Iroquois, although I am insure whether theyhad been informed. The French retained theislands of Cape Breton, Ile Royale, and PrinceEdward Island, Ile St, Jean. Jumping to 1717 we see a new governorappointed for the colony of Nova Scotia, Col.Richard Philipps, born in South Wales. Heorganised the first proper council to govern thecolonys a$airs including military and mercantileinterests, many of the council hailing fromBoston. In 1717 the independent companies ofsoldiers stationed in Nova Scotia andNewfoundland were merged by Nova Scotia's

Governor Richard Phillips to create Phillips'Regiment. The royal warrant stated:

Our Will and Pleasure is, that this ourestablishment of our Regiment of Foot, commanded by our trusty and well#belovedColonel, Richard Phillips, and for the garrison of

Annapolis Royal and Placentia, do commence andtake place from the 25th day of August lastinclusive, from which t ime al l formerestablishments for our eight IndependentCompanies and Garrisons at Annapolis Royal andPlacentia are to cease and determine.

It was the custom at the time to take thename of the Colonel in Chief. It was later tobecome known as the 40th Foot and nicknamedThe Fighting Fortieth.

For the next two years Philipps had to

deal with hit and run raids on Canso which was animportant fishing port, as well as Micmacharassment of the garrison of Annapolis Royal.Col.Philipps organised a force to put a stop tothese infractions and then like many colonialgovernors of the time went back to Englandwhere he carried out his mandate in absentia froseven years. As one text put it #Apparently NovaScotia was a nice place to visit but one did notwant to live there.

Returning to Nova Scotia in 1729 Philippshad a number of issues to deal with including

persuading the Acadians to take the Oath ofAllegiance to the Crown. In 1731 he was recalledto England to answer charges of malfeasancewhich he successfully did as he was promoted toLieutenant General in 1743 and he retained hisgovernorship until 88 years of age in 1749. Henever returned to Nova Scotia. It was this man whose nephew playedsuch a large role in the foundation of CanadianFreemasonry.

From 1717 until 1743 the 40th Foot was to garrisonPlacentia, Annapolis Royal as well as Canso. Andit was into this regiment that Erasmus JamesPhillips, nephew of Richard Phillips, was gazettedas an Ensign in 1726 at the age of 21 years. Mosto"cer ranks were purchased at the time and byAugust 1737 Erasmus had achieved the rank ofMajor.

In 1730 Erasmus had been made by thegovernor a member of the governing council and

    THE 40TH REGIMENT OF FOOT

The 40th Regiment of Foot was aninfantry regiment of the British Armyformed in 1717 in Nova Scotia and 164years later amalgamated into The Prince ofWales Volunteers 'South LancashireRegiment( in 1881. Following furtheramalgamations of British Army infantryregiments, today's direct linear descendantregiment is The Duke of LancastersRegiment. According to historian HarryPiers, the regiment was raised in NovaScotia by General Richard Philipps inAugust 1717 out of independent companiesstationed in North America and the WestIndies. The Regiment was first known asPhilipp's regiment '1717#1749(,Cornwallis

Regiment '1749#1752(. In 1751, the regimentwas numbered the 40th Regiment of Footand became known as 40 th HopsonsRegiment '1752#1759(. The 40th foughtthrough Father Rale's War, King George'sWar, Father Le Loutre's Warand then theFrench and Indian War. During the latterwar the regiment fought in the Siege ofLouisbourg '1758(, Quebec '1759( andMontreal '1760(and Havannah '1761(. Theregiment also fought throughout theAmerican Revolution.

Prior to Father Rales War the Mi'kmaqresisted the establishment of a Britishfortat Canso, Nova Scotia, by raiding thefishing station in 1720. Phillips sent acompany of the 40th, under the commandMajor Lawrence Armstrong , to take upgarrison of a small fort in Canso built by the New England fishermen.)2* The Mi'kmaq continuedpreying on shipping, forcing the garrison to take action in 1722. Serving as marines, the troops and localfishermen were able to disperse the marauding Indians. The next engagement came in July 1724 when aparty of sixty Indians attacked Annapolis Royal. The garrison responded with a poorly calculated sortiefrom the town's dilapidated fort, resulting in the death of a sergeant and private, the wounding of an

    o"

cer and three privates, and the repulse of the troops. After some pillaging, the Mi'kmaq departedwith a number of civilian prisoners.)3*

From 1717 to 1743, Phillips' Regiment, garrisoning Annapolis, Placentia, and Canso, was successful inprotecting settlers from Indian attacks, checking French influence in the area, and preserving theBritish foothold in Atlantic Canada.

    OLDEST MASONIC DOCUMENT INCANADA

Probably the oldest bit of documentary evidenceof the Masonic Order in Canada is an iron backingfor a fireplace now reposing in the Museum of theGrand Lodge of Nova Scotia at Halifax, amongmany other prized relics of the past.

This iron backing bears the arms of theFreemasons as granted by King Edward IV to theCompany of Masons in 1472 and now preserved inthe British Museum in London. These arms showa shield divided by a chevron or square, with theright angle pointing upwards. Superimposed onthe square are two towers and a third below thesquare. Above the shield are the words TheFreemasons Arms and below this inscription thedove of Peace holding an olive branch in its beak.

Below the shield is the motto Follow Reason. Thes e anc ient ar ms ar e to be foundincorporated in the arms of the Grand Lodge ofEngland, Scotland and Ireland and of othersdescended from the British Grand Lodges.

John Easson was commissioned in 1737 bythe Board of Ordnance in London as a MasterArtificer and came to Annapolis Royal in 1738,bringing the Iron backing with him. In 1741 hemarried Avis Stewart to whom he had become

engaged while in Scotland, and who came toAnnapolis to marry him in 1740. Two of theirchildren married and there are many descendantsin Nova Scotia and throughout Canada.

Easson was a member of the first Lodgeon Canadian soil formed at Annapolis in 1738. He

built his house at LaQuille and incorporated thebacking into his fireplace, where it remained untilabout 1925 when it was turned over to Bro. FredW. Harris, Town Clerk of Annapolis and Secretaryof Annapolis Royal Lodge No.33 for many years.Despite its age and the crack made by the heat ofmany fires, the arms and other ornamentation canbe easily traced.

Easson was taken prisoner December 6th,1757 while at the head of a small party of soldiersand artificers sent out from the farm to collect

firewood. One of the party, a grenadier, was killedand the others including Easson, were taken toQuebec, and not released until after that fortresswas captured in 1759. On returning home hereceived a grant of 520 acres.
