Greg Carlson guides the St. Scholastica football program into its sixth season in 2013. The former head coach at Wabash College in Indiana and defensive line and linebackers coach for the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League has been the only coach in CSS football’s history.

Carlson has built the CSS program from the ground up very quickly, as the Saints made the NCAA Division III playoffs the past two seasons in just a handful of years. Carlson’s Saints

finished a perfect 10-0 in the regular season in 2011, before falling to eventual national semifinalist University of St. Thomas in the first round. In 2012, the Saints finished 8-2 in the regular season and finished in a three-way tie for the UMAC regular season title. After the Saints were picked to represent the conference in the postseason, CSS fell to eventual national semifinalist UW-Oshkosh in the first round of the playoffs.

Carlson had 10 players named first team All-UMAC in 2011 and seven in 2012. CSS has had 25 first team all-conference selections in the first five years.

The Saints also had the conference’s offensive, defensive and special teams player of the year in 2011, while Carlson was named the UMAC Coach of the Year. In its five years the CSS football program has accumulated 102 Academic All-UMAC selections, including 30 in 2012.

Carlson works directly with the quarterbacks and coached Alex Thiry to one of the best seasons in Division III history in 2011. Thiry easily led all of college football (FBS, FCS, II or III) with a passer efficiency rating of 218.14. Thiry was named a top 10 finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, which is the Division III equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.

“We’re going to put a young man on the field that the College and the city of Duluth can be proud of,” Carlson said. “Our players will understand that what a young man does in the classroom for four years has more to do with determining his success after college than what he does on the football field. Our staff also wants young men on our roster that will help us build a football program that is recognized for its excellence at the conference, regional, and national levels.”

Carlson is a graduate of Wauwatosa West (Wis.) High School and earned an undergraduate degree in Physical Education at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He holds a Master of Education degree in Physical Education from the University of Oklahoma.

He has been a head coach twice before, leading Wabash College for 18 years from 1983-2000, and working at Whittier (Calif.) College from 2003-2005. At Wabash, Carlson compiled a 112-57-2 record and won four conference championships as the head

coach, after spending three previous seasons as the program’s Defensive Coordinator. At Whittier, he took over a team that had only 13 players in the spring of 2003 and by the 2005 season had increased the team roster to more than 80 players.

His coaching resume includes stops at Ball (Ind.) State (Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator), the University of Illinois (Director of Football Operations), the University of Evansville (Defensive Coordinator), and at Metairie Park Country Day School in New Orleans (Head Coach).

Matt Bremer enters his fourth season on the football staff in 2013 coaching the wide receivers.

Bremer, a 2008 graduate of Crown College with a degree in Sport Management and Biblical Studies, played quarterback for the Storm from 2004-2007.

During his playing days, he helped lead the team to its first winning season in program history. He was voted the team Offensive Player of the Year in 2004 and 2007 and the team MVP in 2006. He was also voted UMAC Player of the Week on five occasions.

Upon graduation, Bremer went on to be the Video Coordinator and wide receivers coach at Willamette University in Oregon during the 2008 season. That season Willamette advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Bremer moved back to Minnesota in 2009 where he was the quarterbacks coach at Mound-Westonka High School. He was also the offensive coordinator for the ninth grade team.

Allen Smith enters his sixth season on the football staff at St. Scholastica and his second season as defensive coordinator.

Smith, who had been the linebackers coach from 2008-11, took over as D-Coordinator in 2012. In his first year, the Saints led the conference in every major defensive category finished in the top 30 in the country in total defense. The Saints allowed less than 17 points per game, which was 23rd in the nation. Zack Dubanoski was named the UMAC Defensive Player of the Year and third team all-region by D3football.com. A total of four players were named first team All-UMAC last season.

Smith coached linebacker Sean Graskey, who was named the UMAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. Smith had a pair of linebackers named first team all-conference in 2011. Smith, along with head coach Greg Carlson, are the only two members on the current coaching staff that were also on the inaugural staff.

Smith came to CSS after a standout career as a Middle Linebacker at Division II Wingate University in North Carolina where he was a two-time all-conference middle linebacker and two-year captain who played in the East Coast Bowl. Smith was also a unanimous selection for the SD-7 Defensive Player of the Year.

Smith graduated from Wingate with a BS in Communications (2005).

Matt Krivinchuk enters his fourth season on the football staff in 2013. Krivinchuk is the defensive coordinator of the Lake Superior Rage of the Northern Elite Football League. In 2008, he guided the Twin Ports Stampede to the NEFL Championship.

Prior to becoming head coach in the NEFL, Krivinchuk spent nine years as an assistant football coach at Superior High School. In 2009, he was the defensive coordinator at Vermillion Community College.

Krivinchuk will be coaching the defensive line for the Saints this season.

Ryan Allgood joins the St. Scholastica football staff in 2013. The Grove, Okla. Native, played two seasons at the University of Oklahoma from 2006-08. He then was a student assistant from 2009-11. Allgood played or coached on three Big 12 Championship teams and was part of three Sooner teams that made BCS bowls. Allgood earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Oklahoma in 2011.

During the previous two seasons, Allgood was a Graduate Assistant for Division II Fort Hays State University in Kansas. There he coached the tight ends, full backs and was assistant offensive line coach.

Allgood will be responsible for the coaching the offensive line for the Saints in 2013.

Fresh off a successful collegiate career, Travis Nehowig joins the football coaching staff in 2013. Nehowig will be in charge of the position he played at CSS, running backs.

Nehowig was a second team All-UMAC choice in 2011 after rushing for an average of 100 yards per game. After playing in all 20 games the first two years of his career, suffered injuries the last two seasons, which restricted him to 12 games the final two years.

Nehowig finished his career with 1,595 yards rush-ing and 12 rushing touchdowns, both of which are the third-most in program history.

Kevin Anderson enters his first season under Coach Carlson’s football staff in 2013. Anderson will coach the defensive backs.

The Oakland, Calif. native played two years at Diablo Valley Junior College where he was a second team All-American as a safety his sophomore year. He then transferred to Utah State University where he played a season and appeared in four games. He wrapped up his collegiate career at Tennessee State where he started four games.

He got his first coaching gig at Piedmont High School as a defensive coordinator in 2006. That year he coached the Bay Area Defensive Player of the Year. In four years, he had four players play at the Division I level.

In 2011, Anderson became the head coach at Piedmont and led the squad to the playoffs in two seasons as head coach. In 2011, he had a school record eight players intend to play at the NCAA level.

Cory Flesch enters his first season on the St. Scholastica football staff fresh off a playing career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth from 2007-11.

The Monticello, Minn. native was part of four conference championship teams and two NCAA Division II National Title squads in 2008 and 2010. Flesch, who started the last two seasons at left tackle for the Bulldogs, was a two-time first team NSIC selection and was named a first team All-American by the Beyond Sports Network his senior season. In 2010, he was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Don Hansen Football Gazette.

Flesch earned a degree in Teaching Social Studies from UMD in 2011. Flesch will be the assistant defensive line coach this season for the Saints.

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-sponsored sports.

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner (2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order.EXAMPLE If there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc.If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc.(3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes(4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams.Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points.

vs. Football’s Fast Start Not Enough to Contain TitansOSHKOSH, Wis. – The St. Scholastica football team scored the first 10 points of Saturday’s NCAA Division III playoff game at Titan Stadium, but fifth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh scored the final 55 points as the Titans advanced with the 55-10 victory.

The Saints were the team getting off to a fast start. After both teams exchanged punts, CSS’s Tyler Zurn intercepted a tipped ball at the Oshkosh 28-yard-line. The Saints would have to settle for a field goal and it would be a long one as the UMAC Special Teams Player of the Year, Mike The-ismann connected on a program-best 44-yard field goal. For the second straight year, the Saints scored the first points in a playoff game taking a 3-0 lead five minutes in.

Then on the Titans’ ensuing possession, Chas Lemon would force a fumble on the first play and Jordan Rasmussen would recover at the Oshkosh 43-yard-line. CSS took advantage, scoring its first NCAA postseason touchdown with Tyler Harper hitting Nick Thiry for a 25-yard touchdown reception to make the score 10-0 St. Scholastica with under eight minutes to play in the first quarter.

However, the Oshkosh offense woke up on its next possession, convert-ing a fourth-and-one around midfield and three, third-down conversion, including on its scoring play when Nate Wara hit Cole Myhra for a 12-yard screen pass to make the score 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

After the Saints came up short on a fourth-and-one at the Oshkosh 17-yard-line, the Titans got a big play when Wara hit Caleb Voss for a 46-yard touchdown on a third-and-long to put Oshkosh ahead 13-10.

After a CSS three-and-out, Wara connected with Zach Kasuboski for a 23-yard reception, even though the ball was tipped by a CSS defender, making it 20-10. After another CSS punt, the Titans scored again on a Cole Myhra 5-yard touchdown plunge and just like that the score was 27-10 UW-Oshkosh with seven minutes left in the first half.

The Titans got one more score before the half and it came on the defen-sive side of the football as Taylor Goodman scooped up a fumble and then would lateral it to Nick Jolin, who scampered in from 12 yards out to make the halftime score 34-10 Titans.

The Titans ran for 254 yards in the first half and accumulated 361 yards of total offense. CSS threw for 111 yards and totaled 150 yards of offense.

The Saints opened with the ball in the second half and drove it into Osh-kosh territory, but the drive would stall at the 34-yard-line. After another Saints punt, the Titans proceeded to move the ball 91 yards and punch it into the end zone on a Jake Dostalek 4-yard run to make it 41-10.

The Titans got in the end zone one more time before the end of the third quarter and it took just three plays to do it as Cole Myhra scored from a yard out to make it 48-10. Myhra added another TD with over four minutes left in the game to make the final score 55-10.

The Titans finished with 600 yards of total offense with 413 yards coming on the ground. The Saints finished with 243 yards of total offense on 174 passing yards and 69 rushing yards.

Titan quarterback Nate Wara was 11-for-23 through the air for 187 yards three touchdowns and an interception. Wara also ran for 128 yards. Cole Myhra ran for 198 yards and three scores. Caleb Voss had four receptions for 106 yards and touchdown.

Tyler Harper was 14-of-32 passing for 174 yards and one touchdown. Jake Jensen ran for 56 yards on 17 carries. Cory Gebhard had four receptions for 73 yards. Nick Thiry, in his final game as a Saint, had three receptions for 64 yards and one touchdown. Alec French led the defense with 10 tackles, including two for a loss.

2013 INDUCTION CLASSDan Seeler – Men’s Soccer/Men’s Hockey – 1978-82Seeler initially came to St. Scholastica because of the hockey program, but decided to also play soccer when the team was introduced in 1978. He was named the team’s MVP three times and still holds the men’s soccer program record for most goals scored in a game when he netted five against UMD in 1979. Seeler is only one of four players to record 10 points in a game in program history. He ranks second all-time in career goals (56) and third in points (130). He recorded the first hat trick in program history, scoring three against Mount Senario College (Wis.) in 1978. He ranks fourth on the program list with 19 goals during the 1981 season. While he was scoring goals for the soccer team, he was preventing goals for the hockey team as a goaltender. Seeler was named the team’s MVP for the 1981-82 season.

Greg Cane – Men’s & Women’s Soccer Coach – 1985-93Cane was part of the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s soccer programs for 15 years, coaching both programs and also as a player. He played for the men’s team from 1979-82 and was a three-year starter as a defender. He was a captain his senior season. However, even before he played for the Saints, Cane was the equipment manager of the CSS Hockey team, beginning when he was 15 years old and until his sophomore year of college. After his playing days, Cane then stepped in the coaching box as an assistant from 1983-84 before becoming head coach of the men’s team for nine years from 1985-1993. Cane accumulated a record of 104-55-12 in nine seasons and led the Saints to the 1988 and 1989 National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) National Championships. He was named the NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. He had just one losing season in his nine years as the men’s coach. In 1990, Cane became the first-ever coach of the CSS Women’s Soccer program. He coached both the men’s and women’s programs from 1990-1993 before becoming the first head coach of the University of Minnesota-Duluth women’s soccer program in 1994.

Jill Tribble Koszarek – Women’s Soccer – 1992-95Tribble was recruited to St. Scholastica by fellow Hall of Fame inductee Greg Cane in 1992. Tribble finished her soccer career third on the scoring list with 146 points. She ranks third all-time in goals scored (55) and fourth in assists (36). Tribble had an historic 1995 season for the Saints, setting program records for points (73), goals (26) and assists (21) in a season. She was named the team’s Most valuable Player that season in leading the Saints to the program’s first winning season and first NAIA Regional appearance. Tribble is just one of two players in program history to record at least 10 points in a contest when she recorded 10 against viterbo University (Wis.) in 1995. She is also tied for the program record for assists in a game as she recorded four assists in back-to-back games during the 1995 season. Tribble earned the NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award in 1994.

Leland Swenson – Baseball – 1997-2000Swenson was the first CSS baseball player to a sign a professional contract with a Major League Baseball organization when he signed with the Texas Rangers. Swenson is dubbed “the greatest shortstop” in the baseball program’s history. He was named the team’s Rookie of the Year in 1997 and was a four-time first team All-UMAC selection. In 1999, he was named a NCAA Division III All-American and a first team All-Midwest Region choice. In 2000, Swenson was named the NAIA Region 3 Player of the Year and a second team NAIA All-American. Swenson was also named the UMAC Player of the Year in 2000. The two-time team gold glove recipient is tied for the program record for most hits (83) and holds the program record for RBIs (77) in a season, doing so in 2000. Swenson ranks fourth in program history in career hits (225) and fifth in runs scored (173). Swenson was part of the 1999 NCAA Division III Tournament squad and 2000 NAIA Super Regional Tournament team.

1999 Baseball TeamThe 1999 CSS baseball team put the program on the map. Led by late head coach John Baggs, the Saints qualified for its first NCAA Division III baseball tournament. CSS would play three extra inning games at the regional, two with top-ranked and host University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and another with 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point. The Saints would fall twice to the No.1-ranked Titans, both in 11 innings, but defeated the Pointers for the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament victory on a Justin Harriman walk-off home run in the 10th. The squad featured eight All-UMAC first team selections. Kevin Kuklinski was named the UMAC Player of the Year and Dave Schlangen was the UMAC Pitcher of the Year. Schlangen, Harriman and Leland Swenson were first team All-Midwest Region choices, while Swenson was also named an All-American. The pitching staff set a single season program record with a 1.97 earned run average, which ranked third in the nation. The staff also tied a then-NCAA record with 13 shutouts. The team’s .965 fielding percentage ranked second in the country.
