Veteran pitching and a solid crop of newcomers are the storylines for the Utah baseball team as it enters its second season in the Pac-12 in 2013.

Key returning players for the Utes include senior starting pitchers Brock Duke and Joe Pond, sophomore reliever Mitch Watrous, two-year starting third baseman Trey Nielsen and three-year outfielder Tyler Relf. The Utes are joined by 16 new players, several who will have starting roles all around the diamond after the loss of seven position starters from 2012.

“The second year in the Pac-12, now we know what we’re up against and what we’re trying to do,” Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. “This year we’re going to be veteran on the mound and very young in the field. My hope is that the young guys really grow up quickly and get better, and the pitching staff is able to hold us in games early and be a strength of our team. We’re going to play a little different style of offense, a pressure-type offense, so execution is going to be vital for us. Pitching and defense are going to be really essential for us to have a good year.

“Our team speed is better than it’s ever been. Our pitching staff, if we stay healthy, is the best we’ve ever had. The key is staying healthy. But we’ve got four or five freshman who are going to start for us early in the year. The thing that they’ve shown at this point is that they are gearing up for the speed of the game. The thing

SEASON OUTLOOK

that I worry most is playing good defense and the grind of the year on them. They’re really going to have to grow up quickly and the veteran guys are going to have to help them. There are going to be learning experiences for all of us.”

INFIELDNielsen has started 103 of 104 games

over two seasons at Utah with 34 doubles and a .272 career batting average. He was eighth in the Pac-12 last year with 17 doubles. Nielsen will move to first base after spending the last two years at third base, and will also expand his role to serve on the pitching staff.

“Trey is our most experienced guy coming back, and we’ve moved him to first base,” Kinneberg said. “One reason is to save his arm, because he’s going to help us on the mound as well. With the addition of Dallas Carroll, who really plays a quality third base, we feel that’s an added bonus. He’s going to have to adjust to the speed of the game and we’ll see how he does offensively.”

Freshman Dallas Carroll was the 2012 Deseret News Mr. Baseball and a two-time all-state player at Taylorsville High School (Utah). Another freshman, Cody Scaggari, will stand beside him at shortstop. Scaggari was an all-state selection at Piedra Vista High School (Farmington, N.M.), helping lead the team to three state titles.

“Playing short is always a difficult task and it’s a really important position for us,” Kinneberg said. “We just hope he can battle through things and make sure that he gets better day-by-day. We feel like he’s going to be a great infielder for us in the future.”

Second base is currently a battle between junior college transfer TJ Bennett and redshirt freshman Kody Davis. Bennett was an all-region selection at Mesa Community College last season after earning Freshman All-America honors at Oral Roberts in 2011. Davis redshirted last year after playing in just six games due to injury.

“Bennett can play all three infield positions, third base, first base and second,” Kinneberg said. “He’s a left-handed bat with some pop so he’ll be in the lineup somewhere. Kody has really come back after an injury last year and gained strength. He had a great fall and has continued that through the spring, so he will get a lot of playing time.”

Junior Cory Hunt, who has played in 45 games as a reserve the last two years, is also in the mix at shortstop and second base. He hit .219 with four doubles last season. Junior Biss Larsen made 13 starts at first base last year and could also see time in the field.

Trey Nielsen has started the last two seasons at third base. He was eighth in the Pac-12 last year with 17 doubles.

Mitch Watrous pitched his way from a relief role to a starting role as a freshman last season.

SEASON OUTLOOK

OUTFIELDRelf has spent three seasons in the

outfield for the Utes and has shown improvement in each year. He hit a career-high .224 last year, leading the Utes with 18 walks.

“Relf is a nice veteran to have,” Kinneberg said. “He’s been through the wars and knows what he’s about. He knows his role and how to play to his role. He’s had an outstanding fall for us.”

Junior Tyler Yagi returns after a two-year LDS church mission. Yagi, who was the Mountain West Conference Tournament MVP as a freshman in 2009, hit .303 over his first two seasons.

“It has been really good to have [Tyler Yagi] back,” Kinneberg said. “He has a renewed energy. I feel like he’s going to have a very good year for us. He can still play in the infield as well but we feel like left field may be a spot for him.”

Senior Connor Eppard has also spent some time in the outfield. He hit .206 last season with two triples, primarily playing designated hitter.

A pair of newcomers who will see starting roles early are junior transfer Braden Anderson and freshman Wyler Smith. Anderson, who played at Salt Lake Community College, was an all-region selection after hitting .394 with nine triples. Smith earned all-league honors at Rancho Buena Vista High School (Vista, Calif.).

“Braden Anderson is very important to us,” Kinneberg said. “We recruited him to play center field. He is a great defensive player and we hope he leads off for us. He has some speed and we will look to him to steal some bases. His on-base percentage is really important to our offense. We’re hoping that he has a quality year. Wyler Smith is a really interesting freshman. He has great speed and is a very good defensive player. If he improves on the offensive side he’s going to be a real force for us in the future.”

PITCHERSDuke, Pond and Watrous all pitched

significant innings last year. Duke and Pond each spent time as the Friday and Saturday starters. Duke has eight wins with 132 career strikeouts, and Pond also has eight wins with 131 career strikeouts. Watrous pitched his way from a relief role to a starting role as a freshman last year. He had a 3.48 ERA.

“They are the experience and strength of our team at this point,” Kinneberg said. “We feel like with those three guys who threw significant innings over the last three years, along with bringing in Tanner Banks and Dalton Carroll, who are both quality pitchers who will see a lot of innings.”

Banks was a two-time all-region player at Salt Lake Community College. He went 11-0 with a 2.23 ERA last season. Dalton Carroll was a two-time first-team all-state player at Taylorsville High School (Utah) and the 2012 Region 2 Most Valuable Player.

Also joining the staff is Chase Rezac, who transferred from Southern Utah after the Thunderbirds dropped their baseball program. Rezac was chosen in the 26th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. He will also see time at designated hitter after hitting .330 last year at SUU.

“Chase Rezac could be a quality asset to us, whatever his role ends up being,” Kinneberg said. “He’s got a chance to really help us on both sides of the ball as a hitter as well as a pitcher.”

Other players who have seen innings on the mound over the past several years and will continue to play a role include juniors Ben Mordini, Josh Chapman, Nick Green and Luke West. Mordini made eight starts last year on the mound. Chapman went 1-1 with a save and a 3.81 ERA with 29 strikeouts. Green had a 2-1 record over 16 games while West saw action in two games last season.

CATCHERS Utah also has a pair of newcomers behind the plate in junior transfer Konnor Armijo and freshman AJ Young. Armijo hit .282 with seven home runs and 43 RBI at Santa Ana College last season. Young was a four-time all-state player at Gila Bend High School (Gila Bend, Ariz.). “Both Konnor and AJ will see a lot of playing time early and we will sort it out from there,” Kinneberg said. “AJ is the catcher of the future. He has a chance to be an offensive guy as well as a pretty good defensive player. We hope with Konnor coming from junior college he’ll bring some leadership and experience. We need them to play good defense and handle our pitching staff.”

Brock Duke (far right) and Joe Pond each have eight career wins and over 130 career

strikeouts.

The dedicated and personable Bill Kinneberg is in his 10th season at the helm of the University of Utah baseball team. He was named head coach of the program on Sept. 15, 2004, marking his second stint in the Utes’ dugout. Utah is entering its second season in the Pac-12.

Kinneberg led Utah back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1960 in 2009, as the Utes won their first Mountain West Conference tournament with a 9-3 win over San Diego State in the championship game. Utah won two games at NCAA’s, defeating Gonzaga and Georgia Southern in the Fullerton Regional.

Several players have earned national honors under Kinneberg. C.J. Cron was a two-time first-team All-American in 2010 and 2011, a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, the two-time District Player of the Year and a two-time MWC Player of the Year. Ryan Khoury earned first-team All-America honors in 2006, and was also District Player of the Year and MWC Player of the Year.

Kinneberg has had four players drafted in the first 10 rounds out of Utah, including the Utes’ first-ever first-round selection in 2011, when Cron was the 17th overall pick. Stephen Fife was a third-round pick in 2008, while Rick Anton went in the eighth round in 2011. Most recently, Tyler Wagner was drafted in the fourth round in 2012.

Kinneberg’s teams have rewritten the record books. Cron shattered the career batting average mark during his three seasons. Jay Brossman holds records for hits, doubles and total bases. Corey Shimada ranks first in the record books for triples, stolen bases, runs scored and walks. Tyler Wagner has a school-record 17 career saves.

In 17 seasons as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level, Kinneberg has a record of 466-450. He earned his 400th career victory in the 2009 NCAA tournament with a win over Gonzaga.

Kinneberg has coached collegiate baseball for 28 years. His teams established school records for victories in a season at UTEP in 1985, Wyoming in 1990 and Utah in 1996.

During Kinneberg’s first stint as Utah’s head coach in 1996, he led the Utes to a 30-22 record. His squad tied for third place in the Western Athletic Conference’s Northern Division and three players earned all-WAC honors.

BILL KINNEBERGHead Coach10th Season (18th Overall)Career Record: 466-450Utah Record: 221-267

Kinneberg has also made his mark on the national scene. In 2010 he served as the head coach of the US National Team that won a silver medal at the FISU World University Championships in Japan.

Kinneberg has done several stints with USA Baseball. He served as the pitching coach in 2007 and 1999. The 2007 pitching staff turned in a 25-12 mark in international competition, and finished with a scant 1.93 earned-run average. Kinneberg also spent several years as director of the organization’s athlete development program.

Prior to joining the Utah staff, Kinneberg worked for the Chicago White Sox organization as a minor league pitching coach.

From 1996 through 2001, Kinneberg was the associate head coach at the University of Arizona. The Wildcats were 124-102 and advanced to an NCAA Regional during Kinneberg’s tenure. He served an assistant baseball coach at Arizona State from 1992 through 1994. During the 1993 and 1994 seasons, Kinneberg helped lead the Sun Devils to back-to-back appearances in the College World Series.

Kinneberg was the head baseball coach at Wyoming from 1986 through 1992. While in charge of the Cowboys’ program, Kinneberg guided his team to the WAC playoffs in five of his seven seasons. In 1990, he earned WAC Coach of the Year honors, leading Wyoming to a 37-18 record. Kinneberg coached 16 All-WAC players while in Laramie.

Kinneberg served as head coach at UTEP in 1985. Prior to that, he was an assistant at UTEP for four seasons.

In addition to his duties with USA Baseball, Kinneberg worked with the Italian Olympic team in 1984, serving as pitching coach.

Kinneberg is a 1980 graduate of Arizona. He played two years with the Wildcats, going 7-4 on the mound with seven saves, including an appearance in the 1979 College World Series. Kinneberg earned a master’s degree from UTEP in 1982.

Kinneberg and his wife Janet reside in Sandy, Utah. They have two children, Joe (12) and David (10).

MIKE CRAWFORDPitching Coach5th Season

Mike Crawford is in his fifth year as the pitching coach for the University of Utah.

The Utes have consistently been towards the top of the league in several pitching categories. The Utes tied for third in the Pac-12 in pickoffs last season. Utah led the conference in fewest hits, doubles and home runs allowed in 2011. In 2010, Utah led the conference in fewest walks, hits and home runs allowed. The team finished second in opposing batting average and saves, behind only College World Series participant TCU. Utah set a school record for strikeouts en route to winning the MWC Tournament in 2009.

Last season, Mitch Watrous was tied for fourth in the Pac-12 in fewest earned runs allowed and tied for second in fewest doubles allowed.

Crawford has had four Utah pitchers drafted, most notably Tyler Wagner, who was a fourth-round pick to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012. Wagner set a school record with 17 saves during his career. Rick Anton was an eighth-round selection to the Dodgers in 2011 after leading the conference in wins and ranking third in strikeouts in 2011. Brian Budrow and Jordan Whatcott were each drafted in 2009.

Crawford previously spent two seasons as associate head coach at Yavapai College where the Roughriders were 41-16-1 in 2008. They climbed to as high as No. 9 in the national polls, and won their league with a 30-8 mark. Crawford’s pitching staff was one of six schools in the 13-team league with an earned-run average below 4.00 (3.81). Yavapai was fourth in the conference strikeouts (393).

From 2002-05, Crawford was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz. He helped the Apaches to a pair of second-place league finishes (2004, 2005), and the 2005 pitching staff had the lowest earned-run average in the conference (2.66). As CC recruiting coordinator, he saw three of his four recruiting classes play for a regional championship. Before that he worked two seasons at Pima College in Tucson, Ariz.

Crawford played at the University of Arizona from 1999-2000. He was a starting pitcher for the Wildcats both years and was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of Week in May, 1999. He graduated from UA in 2001 with a bachelor’s of science in communication and went on to get his master’s from the United States Sports Academy in 2008.

The Tucson native’s playing career began at Yavapai College as a starting pitcher in 1997-98. In 1998, he was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Pitcher of the Year.

Crawford and his wife, Sarah, have a seven-year-old son, Kolby.

BRyAN KINNEBERGHitting Coach6th Season

Assistant coach Bryan Kinneberg is in his sixth season on the University of Utah coaching staff. He serves as hitting coach and is the third base coach.

From 2009-11, Kinneberg coached C.J. Cron into one of the best hitters in the country. Cron, who was a two-time first-team All-American and a Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist, was a first-round draft pick in 2011.

Cron and James Brooks finished first and second in the MWC in 2011 in batting average, while Cron led the nation in slugging percentage. In 2012, Brooks was second in the Pac-12 in doubles, tied for fifth in home runs and ranked in the top 10 in the conference in slugging percentage.

In 2008, Utah led the conference with a .323 batting average. Kinneberg previously spent two years at Oklahoma State as its

volunteer assistant coach. At OSU, he assisted with the hitters and infielders and coached first base. The Cowboys led the Big 12 in nearly every offensive statistical category in 2007, including batting average (.319), doubles (144), home runs (86) and slugging percentage (.518). In addition, the team fielded at a .971 clip.

While on staff at OSU, Kinneberg saw the team make two postseason appearances. In 2007, the Cowboys were one win away from the College World Series, falling to Louisville in the third game of the Super Regional. OSU went 83-41 while Kinneberg was on staff, and had a school record 11 players taken in the MLB draft in 2007.

Kinneberg played at North Carolina State where he was part of two NCAA Regional teams. He also played for Phoenix College in Peoria, Ariz. Kinneberg was an all-district player there, ranking among the league’s best hitters. Phoenix played in the NJCAA national title game in 2001.

He graduated from NC State in 2005 with a degree in philosophy. Kinneberg and his wife Stephanie have a son Gavin and daughter Ella

Grace.

Employment opportunities, culture, quality of life and recreation are some of the reasons why Salt Lake City is consistently named one of the nation’s best cities. In the June 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, Salt Lake City was No. 5 on its list of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” Forbes Magazine ranked Salt Lake City the third-best big city for jobs and fourth-best city for tech jobs in May 2012. The magazine also recognized Utah as the “Best State for Business and Careers” for the second straight year in 2011. Men’s Fitness magazine named Salt Lake the “Fittest City in the Nation” in 2009. Nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake, the city is located in one of the most picturesque places on earth. The lowest point within city boundaries is 4,210 feet near the Great Salt Lake, and the highest is Grandview Peak at 9,410 feet. The Great Salt Lake (48 miles wide and 90 miles long) is the world’s second largest saltwater lake and the largest lake in the western United States.

The city is the cultural, financial, educational, technological, commercial and communications hub of the Intermountain West. Utah was named the most technologically advanced state in the 2008 Digital States Survey and rated as one of the top 10 most socially networked cities in America. Salt Lake is also home to world-renowned medical and technology industries. Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City and its vibrant downtown features dining, shopping, music and ethnic festivals, art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. The annual Sundance Film Festival, which is the largest independent film festival in the U.S., attracts movie stars, celebrities and thousands of film buffs to the area every year. According to P3/Production Update Magazine, Utah is one of the “10 Best States in the Nation for Film.” Professional sports franchises in Salt Lake City include the Utah Jazz (NBA), Real Salt Lake (Major League Soccer), Salt Lake Bees (AAA baseball), Utah Blaze (Arena Football) and Utah Grizzlies (East Coast Hockey League).

Salt Lake City, home to the University of Utah and the state’s capital city, offers an unrivaled blend of metropolitan life and recreational opportunities. With 186,440 residents, Salt Lake City is the largest city in the state and its metro population of 1,124,197 ranks in the top 50 in the United States. Yet Salt Lake City maintains the charm of a small western city.

UTAH ATHLETICS HISTORy

Football is 623-428-31 in its 117-year history. In the mid-1990s, the Utes evolved from a conference contender to a national force and they now play to sold-out crowds in 45,017-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium. The original “BCS Buster,” Utah is 2-0 in BCS bowl games with wins over Alabama (2009 Sugar Bowl) and Pittsburgh (2005 Fiesta Bowl). The Utes won nine consecutive bowl games from 1999-2009, tying for the second-longest bowl win streak in NCAA history and the longest since Florida State won a record 11 straight from 1985-96.. Utah has finished in the nation’s Top 25 six times, including a No. 2 ranking in 2008 and a No. 4 finish in 2004. Men’s Basketball has thrived throughout its history, winning an NCAA Championship in 1944 and finishing as the NCAA runner-up in 1998. Utah, which also won national championships in 1916 (AAU) and 1947 (NIT), has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 nine times. The Utes rank 12th in the nation in all-time victories (1,670), tied for 13th in winning percentage (64.6%), and are in the top 10 in conference titles (32). Utah’s 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and 35 NCAA Tournament wins rate among the top 25 programs. Women’s Gymnastics boasts 10 national championships and eight runner-up finishes. Utah is the only school to qualify for all 31 NCAA Gymnastics Championships and leads the nation in Super Six appearances with 18. One of the best attended

women’s sports in NCAA history, the Ute gymnasts have drawn over 11,000 fans a meet for the past 22 years and were the attendance leader for all women’s sports in 2010 and 2011. Women’s Basketball has averaged over 20 wins a season since its start back in 1974-75. The Ute women have received 17 NCAA Tournament invites since 1982—advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. They have won 22 conference championships. The Men’s and Women’s Ski Team has captured 10 NCAA Championships, including five in the 1980s and three in the 1990s. Volleyball has participated in 10 of the last 14 NCAA Tournaments with two Sweet 16 finishes. Softball has qualified for the postseason 18 times (13 NCAA) and has five College World Series appearances (four NCAA). Women’s Soccer has played in the NCAA Tournament in five of the last 10 years. Baseball won the 2009 Mountain West Conference tournament and claimed two victories at the NCAA Regional. Other Ute athletic highlights include: Men’s Tennis (24 conference championships), Women’s Tennis (three-consecutive NCAA appearances, advancing to the second round in 2012), Men’s Swimming and Diving (24 conference championships), Women’s Swimming and Diving (2006 MWC champion) and Women’s Cross Country (1981 AIAW Division II National Champion).

The latest chapter in Ute athletics history began on July 1, 2011, when Utah officially became a member of the Pac-12 Conference. But Utah’s reputation as an athletics power was established long before it joined the “Conference of Champions.”

TWO NO. 1 PICKS IN THE SAME YEAR

Utah made NCAA history in 2004-05 when it became the only school ever to produce a No. 1 NFL and NBA draft pick in the same year. Quar-terback Alex Smith was taken by the San Francisco 49ers and center Andrew Bogut went to the Milwaukee Bucks.
