Keith Puryear enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Navy women’s tennis team, taking a program that was a club team just four years ago to the Patriot League Tournament finals in each of the last two seasons. Puryear took the Navy women’s tennis program from a club power into a force in the Patriot League in just two short years. Last season, Puryear guided the Midshipmen back to the Pa-triot League Tournament finals with a 20-3 overall mark and a 4-0 Patriot League regular-season record while earning the tour-nament’s top seed for the first time in school history. The team ran off 11 straight wins to start the season and finished a sterling 15-1 at home while four players earned all-Patriot League ac-colades. For his efforts, Puryear was named the Wilson / ITA At-lantic Region Coach of the Year. He accomplished all of this with a lineup that included zero seniors. In 2011, Puryear led the upstart Navy women’s tennis pro-gram to the Patriot League Tournament finals and a 3-0 Patriot League regular-season mark. The Midshipmen finished the year with a 22-10 record, starting the season with an 11-4 mark, then winning nine of their last 10 matches. Three members of the squad were named to the all-Patriot League team and Puryear was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year by his peers. In 2010, with a line-up that featured four freshmen quite regu-larly, the Midshipmen posted a 13-4 overall record, a 2-1 Patriot League mark and a trip to the Patriot League Tournament semi-finals. This past offseason, his fourth full recruiting class was named one of the top mid-major classes in the country (honorable men-tion) after his second class was ranked as the 25th-best mid-major recruiting class in the country by the tennis web site, Ten-nisRecruiting.net(.) Prior to arriving in Annapolis, he won over 440 dual matches while coaching both the men’s and women’s team at UMBC. His Retriever squads won 11 conference titles from 1998 to 2007 and he has won almost 60 percent of all his dual-meet competi-tions. When it was announced in October 2008 that Navy was go-ing varsity in women’s tennis, Navy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk had his man in mind. “Coach Puryear brings to our midshipmen a wealth of suc-cessful experience and documented winning ways,” said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. “Meeting him is to be immediately impressed. Everyone is very enthusiastic about Keith joining the academy family. His philosophies resonate the fundamental values and academic aspirations of our programs and his expect to win mindset will be just what we need to jump-start our new varsity women’s tennis program.” “I would like to thank Chet Gladchuk for giving me the opportu-nity to start the women’s tennis program at the Naval Academy,” said Puryear. “I know the rich history of Navy athletics, so it is an honor to be given this opportunity. I am looking forward to the challenges presented by all of the schools in the Patriot League. My staff and I will work hard to develop a program that is suc-cessful and is one that all can be proud of.” Off the court, Puryear was inducted into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame (Class of 2012) and in May 2009, Puryear joined the United States Tennis Association Board of Directors, adding to his already-long list of accomplishments. Puryear won 443 matches and 10 conference coach-of-the-year honors in a decade as the head men’s and women’s coach at UMBC. His men’s teams have appeared in five NCAA Tourna-ments (2000-2003, 2007), while the women have also made five trips (1999-2003) to the NCAA tournament. Puryear’s squads are also successful in the classroom. Last year’s Navy team had four players earn Patriot League Academ-ic Honor Roll accolades, and UMBC’s women’s tennis squad posted a grade-point average of 3.49 in 2008, best amongst all the programs in the America East Conference.

Puryear is a certified USPTA professional and instructor for the Tennis Institute, where he coaches several MATA and na-tionally-ranked juniors. In May 2009, Puryear joined the Board of Directors with the United States Tennis Association (Maryland) as an at-large director. He also currently plays at the competitive level in both Mary-land and in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association, where he has been ranked in the top five in the state and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in doubles on four different occasions. In 1998, Puryear was ranked No. 1 in the state in the men’s 35 and older, and in 1999, was No. 6 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Puryear played two years of tennis at Howard University be-fore transferring to UMBC. Following a year at UMBC, Puryear enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served from 1983-88. Returning to his studies at UMBC, Puryear graduated with a B.S. in economics in the spring of 1990. Puryear was selected Big South Conference Women’s Coach of the Year in 1997-98, and was the NEC Women’s Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2001. In addition, he was selected as the NEC Men’s Coach of the Year for 1999-2000 and 2000-01. In 2002, he accomplished a double, earning both men’s and women’s coach-of-the-year honors, and in 2003, he captured the wom-en’s award for the third-straight year. Puryear and his wife, Venida, have two daughters, Jasmynn (22) and Keri (16).

Ale Pedergnana is in her fifth year as an assistant coach of the Navy women’s tennis team. On the court, Pedergnana has helped Navy to a 55-17 overall record during the program’s first three years, a 9-1 Patriot League regular-season mark and an appearance in the Patriot League Tournament finals in each of the last two years. Pedergnana has been instrumental in Navy’s success over the last four years, serving as a dynamic recruiter and helping Navy land a pair of highly-regarded classes according to TennisRecruiting.net(.) She played a vital role in Navy’s second class, which was ranked as the 25th-best mid-major recruiting class in the country. The last two classes earned mid-major honorable mention recognition. “Ale has been a great addition to the Naval Academy family. I coached her as a player for four years and this will be her fourth year as an assistant coach with me. She is very knowledgeable about the game, has a great handle on recruiting and we think she will be a very strong asset to our tennis program,” said Puryear. “She also had great success on the court, serving as a team captain during her junior and senior years and should be inducted into the UMBC Hall of Fame when she becomes eligible. I am very excited that she is part of our staff here at Navy.” Pedergnana joined Puryear as they led Navy through the transition from becoming a club power to a force on the Patriot League level. Pedergnana became an assistant coach at UMBC in the fall of 2006 after four outstanding years on the courts for the Retrievers. The duo of Puryear and Pedergnana earned America East Coaching Staff of the Year honors for both men’s and women’s tennis in the 2006-07 campaigns after leading the men’s team to their first America East Championship and the women’s team to the conference finals. As a freshman, Pedergnana won 27 matches and was named all-Northeast Conference in the Northeast Conference. She earned all-America East honors in 2004 and gradually rose to the top of the UMBC “ladder” and played at number one singles during her junior and senior seasons. Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Ford-ham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athlet-ic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 84 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while main-taining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

• In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973.

• 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores.

• Navy won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the first time in school history, and also won the women’s title. Lehigh edged the Mids for the men’s crown.

• Navy’s Jess Palacio and Colgate’s Elise DeRoo were nominees from the Patriot League for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

• 48 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-District recognition.

• For the first time in League history, three women’s basketball teams earned postseason bids, as Navy went to the NCAA Tournament, American to the WNIT and Holy Cross to the WBI.

• Jess Palacio (Navy) was a second-team All-America selection by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and competed at both the NCAA Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field Championships.

• Navy’s Laura Gorinski was invited to the NCAA Women’s Swimming Championship, where she competed in the 200 IM and 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

• Five players were selected in the first 23 rounds of the MLB Draft, the most in that span in Patriot League history. Included in this list were Navy’s Alex Azor (10th round) and Preston Gainey (11th).

• Navy’s Zack Duncavage placed 16th in the discus and Bucknell’s Leonard Joseph placed 17th in the ham-mer throw at the NCAA Division I Men’s Track and Field Outdoor Championships, with Duncavage earning second-team All-America status for his performance.

• Navy’s Katherine Ashton became the first rowing All-American from the Patriot League since 2007 when she was named to the second team by CRCA.

• Navy, which won the Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tour-nament, was ranked 19th in the final deBeer Media Poll of the season.
