NEWSLETTER APRIL 2013 PMI Netherlands Chapter | Postbus 90261 | 1006 BG Amsterdam - Vakvereniging voor Project-, Programma- en Portfoliomanagers www.PMI-Netherlands-Chapter.org PMI’s true global outreach! Last couple of days I was truly into PMI. First, together with Jan Vermeijs, our secretary, I visited the PMI EMEA Leadership Meeting in Istanbul. Besides this super volunteer board-member privilege of being there, and yes it was indeed fun, it was marvelous being there, experiencing the true global outreach of the PMI community. With over 400.000 members (see some statistic in the figure below) we must be one of the largest organized communities worldwide. Isn’t it awesome that you and I are part of this? That alone would be a good reason to join PMI and our chapter and stay part of it, not to mention al the other membership benefits like free e-copies of all the standards that are available, webinars etc. Next to being a member you could also start contributing to PMI and the chapter by becoming a volunteer, taking care of some small tasks or maybe some more comprehensive tasks or even as a board member. Before you know you will be visiting one of the Leadership Meetings, experiencing that overwhelming global outreach of PMI as I did last weekend. Make sure you add your profile and volunteer preferences to the Volunteer Relationship Management System (VRMS) as the chapter will intense our search for volunteers over the next month. Belief me. becoming a volunteer is a very satisfying way of earning PDU’s and besides it is always fun that you can make a difference, small or large. Further down this newsletter there is a very attractive call for volunteers. Let me try to share some of the interesting topics I have heard in Istanbul. First we had an update from PMI regarding the future expectations regarding project management. From analysis conducted by PMI, it shows that a growing need for professional Project Managers is anticipated. This need will be such that they even expect a shortage. How is that for change? That is why PMI focusses very much on training and education. We have to develop ourselves to be able to cope with the growing complexity of projects and we have to make the profession more attractive to youngster as we need more and more professionals. Quite a challenge. Check for details the PMI Pulse 2013. The PMI Netherlands Chapter is supporting this by trying to connect to universities and schools for higher education as well as by promoting the need of certification and training. You could support this as well, by attending the meeting at the Avans Hogeschool on May 16 th . It would be great if we had good representation of professionals to engage with the Avans students. Of course there are more meeting ahead and all are absolutely worthwhile attending but the one at Avans is by the nature of it is primary audience, a very special one. Highly recommended. Check out the event calendar on the website for the full program.

PMI’s true global outreach!

Make sure you add your profile and volunteer preferences to the Volunteer Relationship

Management System (VRMS) as the chapter will intense our search for volunteers over the next month. Belief me. becoming a volunteer is a very satisfying way of earning PDU’s and besides it is always fun that you can make a difference, small or large.

You could support this as well, by attending the meeting at the Avans Hogeschool on May 16th. It would be great if we had good representation of professionals to engage with the Avans students. Next to this future outlook above we had some good update on the whereabouts of neighboring chapter, their worries and concerns. I picked up some very interesting ideas on company outreach but need to discuss that first in the board before we can actually start a project to improve our co-operation with companies. Furthermore we have discussed some nice initiatives on improving retention, creating more membership value, applying changes successfully and how to cope with cultural differences. The latter as you can understand in this international environment a pure necessity. I am therefore very pleased that there is a start-up LIWg on bridging cultural differences and that some members offered to facilitate a chapter event on this. We always welcome those initiatives from within the community. So if you have ideas, let us know via one of these addresses!

Back home after all the excitement of the Istanbul LIM we had a good chapter meeting on engagement. Besides many participants from the chapter we had the PMI Ghana Chapter board participating. Isn’t that what PMI is all about, a global outreach with friends and professionals with kindred spirits around the globe. Help us grow this fantastic experience and visit one of the many events and bring a friend or colleague!.

Finally make sure you have a look at the program of our 2nd Summit as that provides also a touch of global spirit. There is a significant discount for PMI Netherlands Chapter members. Talking about membership value, use it!

Looking forward meeting you, in one of the upcoming events or as a volunteer supporting our Chapter!

Call for Volunteers We come across Project Management at different situations in our lives and at different ages and understanding some basic concepts could benefit each of us a lot, even for the children. There is a Project Management Toolkit for Youth aiming to get those benefits in an easy and understandable way to the youth. We are looking for volunteers who want to help translating this toolkit to Dutch.

Volunteer wanted for translation of the Project Management Toolkit for Youth!

As you know, volunteers are the core of PMI. Without volunteers, it is very hard to get anything done. Now, once more, we require your support.

The PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF) is a worldwide organization of PMI that brings the benefits and the power of project management to local communities and to the farthest reaches of the world for social good through grants, programs, scholarships, and educational resources.

One of the resources is the Project Management Toolkit for Youth. This material is in English and is to be used for primary schools. Our colleagues from the Belgium Chapter have taken the lead in translating this material into Dutch, French and German, so the children in our countries can benefit from this material as well. These translations will be made available from the PMIEF website.
