2013⁄14Expand your horizons

2013⁄14

Dear friends,

I offer my heartfelt blessings to you from the Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas. It is my pleasure to present the 2013–2014 program, designed with great care to allow you to go deeper on your spiritual path; to expand your heart, your mind, and your horizons; and to discover the joy of our unity and the beauty of our diversity.

This program is inspired by the vision of our Guru, Swami Visnudevananda, who left a profound and complex legacy. As the years pass, it becomes ever more clear that his mission to help humanity was based on deep wisdom and insight. To him, the source of our human suffering came from the level of our consciousness and the remedy involved a shift of consciousness that would uplift humanity into higher dimensions. He foresaw this shift, which is taking place at this time, but he also knew that like all transformations, it could be painful and difficult. His work was to ease the pain, sooth the transition, and help humanity move forward towards a bright future. He did so by training yoga teachers, conducting peace missions, and teaching humanity about the four paths of yoga and the yoga of synthesis.

Swamiji also recognized that some souls incarnated with the purpose of helping mankind in this transition, including many yogis, saints, spiritual leaders, healers, scientists, sacred artists, and musicians. He made it a point to find those individuals, to invite them to our ashrams and centers, and to ask them to share their knowledge, their wisdom, and their light. His vision was to bring them together so they could interact with one another and let their light truly shine.

In next season’s program, we bring together previously skeptical scientists who awakened to new truths and ground-breaking researchers investigating the nature of reality; we gather rabbis, priests, lamas, and swamis to debate on the ultimate goal of the spiritual path; we invite Ayurvedic healers, Chinese doctors, herbalists, shamans, and physicians to share their vision of health and vitality; and we welcome cantors, gospel choirs, Sufi singers, and kirtan groups to share the ecstasy of devotional singing. Through these gatherings, we continue the mission of Swami Visnudevananda to help humanity on its karmic journey.

I invite you to participate in these events of light, beauty, and wisdom and to contribute by bringing in your own light. We are privileged to be alive at this time, a time that yogis, mystics, scientists, and spiritual leaders recognize as the most special and unique in the history of humanity and planet Earth. Join us, and be part of this truth.

Wishing you a wonderful, fulfilling, and shining year ahead!

Om shanti, Om peace,

Swami Swaroopananda

Our LineageThe Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat follows an unbroken lineage of teachers who practice the classical yogic wisdom of Swami Sivananda, which was introduced to the West by his disciple, Swami Vishnudevananda. We are part of an ever-growing international organization of Sivananda ashrams and centers, with the mission to share peace, health, and joy through yoga.

Swami Sivananda (1887-1963)

A venerated saint of modern times, Swami Sivananda is the inspiration behind the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. Following a brilliant career as a medical doctor, Swami Sivananda renounced worldly life and established the Sivananda Ashram and Divine Life Society in Rishikesh, India.

He became one of the most prolific yoga teachers who has ever lived, authoring more than 300 books. Although he rarely left Rishikesh, Swami Sivananda’s teachings quickly spread worldwide, continuing to deeply touch and transform the lives of many to this day.

Swami Vishnudevananda (1927-1993)

Swami Vishnudevananda trained under Swami Sivananda in all aspects of yoga for ten years, becoming a world authority on yoga. In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent Swami Vishnudevananda to spread the teachings of yoga in the West, where he founded and directed the International

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and created the first Yoga Teacher Training Course to empower individuals to be ambassadors of peace through Swami Sivananda’s yoga teachings. A tireless campaigner for world peace and a master of Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga, he authored the now classic books The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and Meditation and Mantras.

YVP November 4–7 Cultivating VairagyaThe Practice of Non-Attachment We are all looking for happiness, but according to the teachings of yoga, we usually fail to obtain it because we are looking in the wrong place. The way to gain happiness is to let go of our attachments to external objects and false identifications. By letting go of the false, we are left with the truth of our own essential nature.

Neuroscience and World ReligionsDifferent Practices, Different Brains, Different Spiritualities?Stephen Kaplan, Daniel Drubach, William Waldron, Prantik KunduFor five days we will explore the interface between religious/spiritual practices and the brain sciences. Our speakers will examine some of the different practices that can be found in the world’s religions and explain how contemporary neurosciences understand what is happening in the brains of those who engage such practices. We will not only ask if different religious practices produce different brain states, but we will also ask if these different practices produce different states of mental and spiritual health. Do some practices produce one type of mental/spiritual health and other practices produce others? These discussions may lead us to ask if these diversities of practice and neurological function lead to a diversity of spiritual experiences.

Stephen Kaplan, PhD, is Professor of Religious Studies at Manhattan College, specializing in Indian and comparative religions. He publishes articles in leading journals,

is the author of two books, and is working on a book entitled Advaita Vedanta and the Neurosciences.

Daniel Drubach, MD, is a member of the Behavioral Neurology Division at Mayo Clinic. Author of The Brain Explained, he writes on the neuroscience of music, meditation, language,

William Waldron, PhD, is Professor of Religion at Middlebury College in Vermont. A recent Fulbright Senior Scholar in Nepal, he is currently researching the relation between

theories of mind in the Yogācāra school of Indian Buddhism and in modern cognitive sciences.

Joshua Goldstein, Brant Secunda, Moshe Cohen, Elaine Valdov, Amy Weintraub, Linda Graham, Mirabai Ceiba Following Swami Vishnudevananda’s mission of promoting inner and outer peace, we are delighted to host the 7th Yoga for Peace Symposium. Featuring world-renowned speakers who have dedicated their lives to promoting peace among people and nations, inner peace and sustainability, we invite you to join us for this gathering and become inspired to change the world from the inside out.

Joshua Goldstein is an interdisciplinary scholar of war and peace, and author of Winning the War on War: The Decline of Armed Conflict Worldwide, winner of the

2013 Conflict Research Society’s Book of the Year award. He has published many articles and op-ed pieces.

Brant Secunda, a shaman, healer, and ceremonial leader in the Huichol Indian tradition of Mexico, teaches worldwide. Alongside dignitaries including former President

Jimmy Carter, Brant cofounded the Peace University in Berlin. He is coauthor of Fit Soul, Fit Body.

In this symposium, we learn from activists themselves how to contribute to changing the world. Moshe Cohen (Mr. YooWho) will share from his experience as a “clown without borders” and Elaine Valdov from her experience as the founder of “Yogis without Borders.” Brant Secunda will speak to us about protecting the earth and Amy Weintraub will discuss the important work of teaching yoga to those suffering from trauma. Linda Graham will encourage us to bring mindfulness to ourselves and others and Joshua Goldstein will present research showing that contrary to what we think, war and violence are actually declining in the world (so what we are doing is actually working!).

We will learn that in order to help bring peace, we first need to find our own inner peace and joy. And yet, our social engagement is by itself spiritual practice. By helping others, we gain peace and joy. Finally, we will gain a few practical tools to help us develop and carry out our own initiatives.

Near-Death Experiences and Life-After-Death ConferenceNathan Katz, Raymond Moody, Eben Alexander, Rabbi Arthur Seltzer, Samani Unnata Pragya With the extraordinary advances in medical technology, many more people are reporting having had near-death experiences. We have all heard about people seeing a white light or angelic beings, or seeing their bodies in the treatment room from perspectives that are physically impossible. What do these experiences mean? Do they actually provide information about what happens after death? Is there life after death? Are we this physical body or are we a soul that continues to exist even when the physical body ceases to exist? Guided by spiritual teachers and medical professionals, we will explore these questions from the perspectives of religion, neuroscience, and psychology. We will leave with an understanding that will help to lessen our fear of death and the grief we experience upon the death of loved ones.

Because yoga allows us to experience the interconnectedness of life. The main goal of this course is to empower students to massively propagate yoga in the world in a sustainable way. Rather than focusing on the “outer” structure of a yoga teacher, we will focus on Swami Sivananda s main teachings to “serve, love, give, purify, meditate, and realize.” More online.

The Ultimate GoalEnlightenment, Salvation, Self-Realization, or Something Else?Swami Medhananda Puri, Daniel Matt, Father Joseph Mitchell, Lama Rodney Devenish, Imam Jamal RahmanIn the wide, colorful spectrum of spirituality, each tradition describes an ultimate goal, upon which its devotees focus and toward which they aspire. How do these various goals relate to one another? Are they identical, or do they differ somewhat—or do they conflict with one another? In this interfaith symposium, five teachers from the world’s great religions will each present the ultimate goal, as it is formulated within their own tradition: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

Swami Medhananda Puri is a distinguished, traditional teacher of Vedanta. In 1979, he joined the Kailash Ashram in Rishikesh, where he was initiated into the ashram’s monastic order

and has served as acharya at times. His students have now become acharyas, teaching worldwide.

Daniel Matt, PhD, is one of the world’s leading authorities on Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical tradition, and is currently translating the Zohar, the masterpiece of the Kabbalah. His books

include God and the Big Bang: Discovering Harmony between Science and Spirituality.

Father Joseph Mitchell, CP, is executive director of the Earth and Spirit Center in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a Catholic priest and member of the Passionist religious order. Fr. Mitchell leads

retreats in Christian spirituality, meditation, the new cosmology, and environmentalism.

Lama Rodney Devenish (Karma Kunzang Palden Rinpoche) is one of the three spiritual directors of the Dharma Fellowship of His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa. Trained in the

Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism, he is cofounder of a meditation retreat center, The Hermitage.

Imam Jamal Rahman is cofounder and Muslim Sufi minister at the Interfaith Community Sanctuary in Seattle and adjunct faculty at Seattle University. Imam Jamal

is a spiritual counselor who has a passion for interfaith work and travels and teaches internationally. His books include The Fragrance of Faith: The Enlightened Heart of Islam.
