The place where Suzhou High School-SIP is
located used to be a waterside village. In 2005,
a new school rose among this piece of beautiful
wetland. Until now the school boasts a piece of
10,000 m2-sized wetland to its southwest part,
whose diversity and vitality is continuously
offering us inspiration and wisdom. With
the aim of The Integration of Western and
Eastern Cultu res, of Traditional Culture and
Contemporary Culture, we initiated our study
on wetland culture. While many scholars often
describe the south-Yangtze River culture, which
is coined as Wu culture, as featuring water,
shery, rice planting, silkworm and boat, we see
water as the fountain and soul of those cultures.
Zhang Zhiping, one of our school PE teachers, is
also a senior practitioner of martial arts. During
his lifelong time, hes made a lot of friends in
martial arts society. The Yue Boxing introduced
in this book was taught to Mr. Zhang by a boxer
in Hu Zhou, Zhejiang province back to 1970s. In
this pamphlet each of the moves in Yue Boxing
is named and described in detail.
Zhao Qian, another PE teacher at our school, is
also the co-author of this textbook. She practiced
martial arts since her childhood and is also a
qualified competitor in the city and provincial
martial art competitions.
This school-based curriculum characterized as
wetland culture and Yue Boxing, is expected
to contribute to promoting our traditional culture.

Brief Introduction of Boat Boxing
The southern reach of Yangtze River has long
been a habitation with r ich natural resources and
soothing climate. Archeologists found out that
from as early as 10,000 years ago our ancestors
have been the residents here. They were called
Wu people. They created the most advanced
culture of their world. They worshipped technique
delicacy, witchcraft and fight against nature.
Suzhou was then the center of their culture.
These ancestors were the kings of the waters.
They fed on fish and lived with boats. From the
excavations in Hemudu Siteone of the earliest
cultures to cultivate rice, we can see that by the
time of 3000 B.C. , Wu people had acquired the
techniques of ship building. During the feudal
revolution period of China (770 B.C.-256 B.C.),
Wu people were able to build warships. All
through history, boats have been the lifeline
and feet of Wu people. Zheng He, the greatest
navigator in Chinas feudal ages, practiced his
seamen here in Suzhou. A great general in Song
dynasty (1127-1279 A.D.) named Yue Fei, taught
his soldiers boat boxing to sharpen their strength.
In addition, in the water transport of ancient
China, we also had a group of armed people. They
also practiced boat boxing when on boats.
Boat boxing was not only used as defensive skills,
but also was perfo rmed at trad itional festiv als
and certain moves cooperated in Chinese Folk
operas. There are many water performances and
celebrations for folks in Suzhou to enjoy. One
of them is called Nao Qingming (in English it
means having some fun in early spring). It started
in Ming dynasty (1368-1644, A.D.) and was
performed for the harvest. A shack is built up with
pine trees on the boats. The number of boats can
reach over ten. There will be a silk woman beating
the gong and sounding the drums. When the boats
reach the center area of the town, the silk woman
would post different gestures to forecast theharvest for silk or the opposite. There is another
sherman doing the same on crops.
Water performances also i nclude speed boat,
parading boat and racing boat. Speed
boat refers t o those boats that have young men
perfor ming mart ial arts or acrobati cs on t hem.
They often proceed fast in the water. Parading
boat is big boat with color ful decor ation s. It
moves forward slowly to let the people enjoy the
artistic performance like musical instrument
performance and opera singing.

Boat BoxingBoat Boxing
Boxing boat is similar to speed boat. On the
rst of July and 15thof August in lunar calendar,
Shihu, Bacheng in Kunshan and Beiqiao in
Xiangcheng, all regional areas of Suzhou, would
hold boxing boat contest. The racing boat can be
scored. The berths of the boat are decorated with
colored ribbons. At both ends of the boat there are
people pu nting the b oat. In m iddle on the d eck,
boxers perform sword, halberd, chained stone and
steel forks against beating gongs and sounding
drums. After the contest, local celebrities will
give certain awards according to the performance
of each boat.
The fifth edition of Marti al Magazi ne in 1982
published an article with the title Fun in Boxing
Boat Competition. This article pointed out that
during the celebration of 10th anniversary of our
nation, forks in southern reach of Yangtze river
relived this boxing boat activity again upon the
advocation of the government for national arts.
Unfortunately, boxing boat has remained out of
sight since then.
April 19th
, 2007, on the opening ceremony of the
10th
Suzhou International Tourism Festival, a
magnificent on-water performance Glamour of
Water was displayed alongside Xu River in an
ancient town of Suzhouthe city of Xu. One of
our school teachers Zhang Zhiping, took part in
the group performance of boat boxing . In October
of 2012, a program in CCTV International
Channel called Going throughout China
produced a se rial feature about the b oat box ing
in Zhujiajiao, a small town in Shanghai Qingpu
district. In addition to those efforts, we also have
been info rmed that the muni cipal gover nmen t
of Suzhou is working on the application for
a position in the Worlds Intangible Cultural
Heritages list for boat boxing.

1.History
A great general in Chinas Song dynasty (1127-
1279, A.D.) named Yue Fei and his invulnerable
armies were deeply involved in the history of the
boxing practic ed by t he Yues . Yue Fei hims elf
recorded the actions, principles, guidelines, spells,
lyric songs of Yue Boxing. Later his two sons
Yue Zhen and Yue Ting composed his records
into Boo k of Wumu , which was kept secretly
somewhere. People in the following generations
treated this book as a treasure and it was pursued
nonstop. This book also has inspired the greatest
martial arts novelist Jin Yong for his book The
Legend of the Condor Heroes.
The boxing practiced by the Yues not only can
be appl ied to war fig hts, but als o be use d to
keep fit. Yue boxing also found its way onto the
temple fairs as part of the folk culture. During
the Cultural Revolution, those senior boxing
practitioner were wronged and persecuted. After
the turmoil boxing practice was accepted by the
public. It w as duri ng this time perio d t hat Mr.
Zhang learned Yue boxing from a Zhejing boxing
practitioner named Xiao Sheng. Z hang, out of his
admiration towards General Yue Fei, practiced
the boxing privately and kept it to himself until in
1980 when Emei Film Studio came to Suzhou to
shootEver-lasing. There was a scene in which the
protesting m ilitias made up by farmers practiced
boxing in the open air. The problem was that each
of the actors only got 1 m2 to stretch their body,
which was too small. Zhang helped the director
out of the trouble by showing him Yue boxing.
Now in this lm you can see those actors playing
Yue boxing in this scene.
After Zhang started teaching PE in Suzhou
High School he often practiced Yue Boxing
for his students when there was limited space
to move around in the classroom. Later he was
transferred to Suzhou High SchoolSIP. Our

school developed a serial school-based curriculum
with a wetland culture reservation orientation.
And Zhang made contributions by sharing with
us his Yue Boxing. Now Yue Boxing has been
incorporated into our PE textbook and practiced
by our students.
Starting from 2011, Zhang Zhiping and Zhao Qian
took advantage of the time period of morning
exercise to practice Yue Boxing. Our efforts were
appreciated by the Martial Arts Society of Suzhou
and it made us Promotion Base for Boat Boxing.
During our visit to Chung Cheng High (Main)in Singapore in April of 2012, our students and
teachers played Yue Boxing and got enthusiastic
feedbacks. In June, our school held a contest
of Yue Boxing among the second-year junior
students. And the final winners50 students in
Class 2 and Class 5 competed in the municipal
sports contest in celebration of the Mid-autumn
Festival and the National Day. They won the top
two prizes.
2.Characteristics
Boat Boxing literally refers to the boxing or
instruments performed on boat.
When martial arts are performed on boat, every
move will have to offset the shaking of the boat.
As a result Yue Boxing practitioners need to have
a strong grasp of their gravity core, and at thesame time, they need to be agile and light-footed.
This kind of Kung Fu attacks with the cover of
defense. The hands hinge on the body while the
feet barely launch an attack.
The Kung Fu of the Yues differs from the Kung
Fu in South China, which features over-reliance
on arms. Neither is it like the Kung Fu in North
China, which features over-reliance on legs.
Yue Boxing attaches great importance to the
coordinated move of both arms and legs. In a
word, its the simultaneous movement of hands,
feet, elbows and body.
