Aurora out next week! Aurora hits the newsstands again next week. As always you are encouraged to support our diocesan magazine and buy a copy of your local paper to receive your July edition of Aurora. The July edition of Aurora will appear in The Newcastle Herald and The Maitland Mercury on Tuesday 1st July, in The Scone Advocate on Thursday 3rd July and in The Muswellbrook Chronicle, The Manning River Times and The Singleton Argus on Friday 4th July.

From the Pastor’s Desk The Feast of St Peter and Paul commemorates the efforts of those two Apostles to proclaim the Good News of Jesus even in the face of persecution. Both Peter, the ‘chief of the apostles’, and Paul, the ‘apostle to the Gentiles’, gave witness to the faith through their death in the city of Rome under one of the great persecutions of Nero, and while that was by far the greatest act of their witness, before they made it to Rome they had been witnessing to Jesus in any number of ways.

There can often be a focus on the ‘grand act’, the ‘grand gesture’, that makes an impact. Often enough, however, the most effective way of providing witness to the Christian faith comes in the repetitive, the day to day, the ‘ordinary’. We shouldn’t be afraid of the very public, very large act of witness that we may be called upon to provide from time to time, but neither should we think that these are the only ways in which we give powerful witness to what we believe.

As we have the opportunity this Sunday to remember the grand witness of Peter and Paul through their martyrdom in Rome, let’s not forget that there were so many other ways in which they witnessed to the faith in the ordinary and everyday.

Perhaps then we too can follow their example, and live out our Christian lives in ways that given powerful witness to the Good News of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection in the little things that make up the cut and thrust of daily life.

Mission Appeal As mentioned elsewhere in Bridgeside Bulletin our Parish is holding the annual Mission Appeal this weekend. We welcome our speaker, James Odoh, to our Parish community. Please take the opportunity to meet James and speak with him during his time with us.

Can I also encourage you to make a generous response to this Appeal, as you always do, in order to support the ongoing work of Catholic Missions.

Diocesan Youth Retreat For those attending the 6pm Mass you may notice a large number of younger people with us. These young people are taking part in the Diocesan Youth Retreat at Camp Elim, and I would ask you to make them welcome among our worshipping community.

Perhaps you might like to introduce yourself to some of them, and offer words of encouragement as well.

Until next week... Fr Andrew

Liturgy Help Trial & Workshop As previously mentioned the Diocesan Liturgy Council is currently coordinating an evaluation trial of the LiturgyHelp resource for possible deployment across the Diocese.

Parish ministers such as our Readers, Communion to the Sick ministers, Catechists, etc, are invited to avail themselves of a ‘partial access’ subscription (free!) as they focus on access to the texts of readings, and provide access to reflections and commentaries.

If you would like to take advantage of a trial ‘partial access’ subscription, and have access to the Internet at home, you are invited to contact Fr Andrew BY EMAIL so that you can provided with access to the site. All that is asked is that you make use of the login and be prepared to provide some feedback at the end of the trial.

Fr Andrew ‘Away’ Some advance warning of my ‘absence’ from the Parish for the week beginning Monday 7th July in order to attend an “Intensive” connected with my current studies.

I say ‘away’ because I will actually be in the Presbytery participating via the Internet. So while I will be around I won’t be available during the day and I would ask for your understanding.

With Fr Dennis away in Melbourne during July there will be no Masses during this week. As is the usual practice, the Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office) will be celebrated at those times.

Fr Andrew

Welcome! We welcome to our community of faith Kepler Robins the son of Gregory and Melissa who will be baptised with water and the Holy Spirit this weekend.

A People for Everyone The salvation which God offers us is the work of His mercy. No human efforts, however good they may be, can enable us to merit so great a gift. God, by His sheer grace, draws us to Himself and makes us one with Him. He sends His Spirit into our hearts to make us His children, transforming us and enabling us to respond to His love by our lives. The Church is sent by Jesus Christ as the sacrament of the salvation offered by God. Through her evangelizing activity, she cooperates as an instrument of that divine grace which works unceasingly and inscrutably. Benedict XVI put it nicely at the beginning of the Synod’s reflections: “It is important always to know that the first word, the true initiative, the true activity comes from God and only by inserting ourselves into the divine initiative, only begging for this divine initiative, shall we too be able to become – with Him and in Him – evangelizers”. This principle of the primacy of grace must be a beacon which constantly illuminates our reflections on evangelization.

The salvation which God has wrought, and the Church joyfully proclaims, is for everyone. God has found a way to unite Himself to every human being in every age. He has chosen to call them together as a people and not as isolated individuals. No one is saved by himself or herself, individually, or by his or her own efforts. God attracts us by taking into account the complex interweaving of personal relationships entailed in the life of a human community. This people which God has chosen and called is the Church. Jesus did not tell the apostles to form an exclusive and elite group. He said: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt28:19). Saint Paul tells us in the people of God, in the Church, “there is neither Jew or Greek... for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:28). To those who feel far from God and the Church, to all those who are fearful or indifferent, I would like to say this: the Lord, with great respect and love, is also calling you to be a part of His people!

Being Church means being God’s people, in accordance with the great plan of His fatherly love. This means that we are to be God’s leaven in the midst of humanity. It means proclaiming and bringing God’s salvation into our world, which often goes astray and needs to be encouraged, given hope and strengthened on the way. The Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel.

Each session will run from 10am to 12:30pm. The cost for CSO and Parish Participants is $30 and for general participants $50 (concessions available). You may like to consider getting together in groups to provide a range of tastes from the same country.

St Peter and St Paul, Apostles Have you noticed that away from the Church we hear more about St Peter than we do about St Paul? It’s because St Peter regularly features in jokes about heaven, like this one.

A man died and met St Peter at the gates of heaven. St Peter said, ‘Before you meet with God, I thought I should tell you that we’ve looked at your life, and you really didn't do anything particularly good or bad. We’re not at all sure what to do with you. Can you tell us anything you did that can help us make a decision?’

The newly arrived soul thought for a moment and replied, ‘Yeah, once I was driving along and came upon a woman who was being harassed by a group of bikies. So I pulled over, got out my wheel brace, and went up to the leader of the gang. He was a big, muscular, hairy guy with tattoos all over his body and a ring pierced through his nose. Well, I told him he and his gang had better stop bothering the woman or they would have to deal with me!’ ‘I'm impressed,’ St Peter responded, ‘When did this happen?’ ‘Less than ten minutes ago’ the man replied.

St Paul doesn’t feature in many funny stories, except for the children who got rather confused about his life and wrote in their term paper that ‘St Paul cavorted to Christianity. He preached holy acrimony, which is another name for marriage. That a Christian should have only one wife, which is called monotony. And in the end the natives of Macedonia did not believe in Paul, so he got stoned.

Peter and Paul symbolise two facets of our Christian community: mission and maintenance. Paul was the great missionary and Peter was the great leader who held together the earliest disciples. Both were crucial to the Christian community’s expansion and survival.

The image of the missionary venturing out boldly to proclaim Christ to the world is so much more engaging than being a maintainer. But every organisation or institution needs someone to provide a clear focus and vision, and to establish structures that will see the group survive past the first generation. To this day we need our Peters and our Pauls.

Peter and Paul did not always have an easy relationship. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that they disagreed about a fundamental issue in the earliest Christian mission: for whom was the good news of Jesus intended? Peter thought it was just for Jews. Paul argued it was for the Gentiles as well. What makes Peter’s leadership so outstanding is that he not only listened carefully to what Paul said, but saw what Christ was doing among the Gentiles. He trusted that

the working of the Spirit was bigger than he was, and that it included a man who never met Jesus and yet seemed to have a richer insight into where and how Christ was to be preached. That takes courage and humility.

Today we need to be careful that in Christ’s name we do not bind things up so tightly that we leave no room for the Holy Spirit to challenge or surprise us. Having the courage and humility to ‘hang a bit loose’ is not weakness. It can be about trusting that Christ’s saving love is still at work in unexpected ways with all people everywhere.

Peter and Paul show what can happen when we cooperate with Christ in living out his love. Things we never dreamt of become possible. But their lives also show us the cost. Both of them died as martyrs. We may not be asked to embrace martyrdom in our lives, but in the way we run our race we are challenged to keep the faith and proclaim Christ by how we live. By doing so we are assured that when we come to heaven we will be greeted by Peter and Paul and with them we will behold the fullness of love, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for eternity.
