Editor’s Notes We have had a very pleasant spell of weather and the village gardens are a joy to see. It seems a long time since there so much luxuriant growth and colour. The cricket match on the 18th of May lived up to expectations. The weather was perfect with clear blue skies, warm sunshine and no wind. As always the Cople wicket was immaculate. Bedfordshire bated first and made 325 for the loss of only 5 wickets in their 50 overs. This looked like a good score but Hertfordshire made 177 runs in their first 30 overs for the loss of only 2 wickets and the match was swinging their way. Bedfordshire fought their way back into the game taking another 7 wickets but the visitors, who rarely looked threatened, held on and made the winning runs with one wicket and 9 runs in hand. There was a good turnout and all enjoyed the festive atmosphere. Picnics, beef burgers, wine, beer and sun tan lotion were consumed eagerly. Hopefully events like this will become regular features. Next month we have the Church Fete on 21st June. A little later this year in the hope that the weather will be kinder. However, this is England, you pay your money and take your chance. The list of prizes for the grand draw grows by the day. Please see the item on page 5. Ged Peeke

Churchwardens’ Letter Many thanks to all of you who helped to make the Easter services , one of the most important periods in the Christian Church Calendar ,so meaningful for us all. In particular the children of the Sunday School who acted out the Good Friday drama so well. Thanks to the ladies who arranged the beautiful flowers for Easter Day and all those who took part in the services in any capacity. The church wardens rely heavily on your support during a vacancy, helping to provide continuity in all that we do together. At last we have the church clock working again after several weeks without its familiar chimes. As far as we know it is the first breakdown since its installation in circa 1829, an excellent example of Victorian engineering. You can come and see the clock on Heritage Days as part of the very popular tower trips. Our grateful thanks to the “Friends” who gave us the funds to get the work done. On June 21st we will be holding the Church fete in the village hall and playing fields. (see back page ). The Fete is our most important fund raising event of the year and goes a long way towards paying the insurance bill. This year we will be joined by representatives of the Bedford Girls School who will introduce us to Lacrosse by way of a Lacrosse obstacle course and they will also be available to bring everyone up to date with their plans to move their playing fields to our village. The Grand draw is a very important part of the fetes continuing success. If you haven’t bought tickets yet, give June or Mike a ring who will make sure you don’t miss out on the possibility of winning one of the great prizes on offer, including the £100 first prize. We have started to build a new small door for the South wall of the church to replace the original which was partially rotten. It will be an exact copy and we plan to use the original hinges and lock which are still in useable condition. We are grateful to John Relf of Water End who supplied some of the English oak. Mothers Union

At our meeting in May members and friends enjoyed a lovely afternoon with our host Gwynneth Akins.

After a hymn and prayers, Gwynneth and Jill tested our knowledge of proverbs. We were given the initial letters of each proverb and we had to work out which one it was, and as to whether it appeared in the Bible. We also learned the history of a

number of well known sayings.

Gwynneth then served up a delicious cream tea enjoyed by all and was given a small gift to thank her for a most enjoyable afternoon.

Our next meeting, on the 9th June at 2pm, will be held in Glebe House when our host will be Judith Howard.

Wild about Cople

On a damp, chilly, spring day in May we may wish for some warm sunshine but cold, windy and wet springs seem to have been a feature for the last couple of years. And our wildlife can suffer in this weather, too. And particularly our birds, most of which now are now either nesting and/or feeding young nestlings or have fledglings about to leave the nest in hedgerows and trees.

As the rain teems down, young birds can be exposed to chills and do not have the ability to regulate their own body temperature and rely upon the parents to cover them and keep them warm when it is raining (which they usually do). Many nesting birds develop what is called the ‘brood patch’ – an area under the belly where the soft, downy, feathers are temporarily shed thus providing very warm, bare skin (and richly supplied with blood vessels) – this acts as a hot water bottle to keep the young birds warm and dry. But the parents have to go off to find food both for themselves and their young and rain will quickly chill naked nestlings if they are not kept covered.

And the weather can also affect the finding of that food. Most small birds in this country have evolved to time their breeding and nesting to coincide with the best availability of food ie; during the spring when the hedgerows, trees and shrubs are full of juicy caterpillars, grubs and other insects which supply high-energy food, full of proteins, for young, growing birds. Cold and wet weather can mean insects go into hiding and become harder to find, costing more in time searching and therefore food becomes more ‘expensive’ in evolutionary terms. Some birds can get around this by becoming torpid (ie; young swifts) and they can slow their body metabolism in colder weather and so reduce the need for food and this can help them to survive dangerous periods for a short time – almost like a kind of halfway house hibernation. But, global warming is playing havoc with the timing of insect hatching cycles and it is becoming increasingly harder for birds to find sufficient food at the right time.

And while we are talking of swifts; I’ve written about them many times, and we are now on ‘Swift-time’! These beautiful, magical, dark birds of our summer skies really must be the epitome of summer for many of us. Their stay is all too brief so we should enjoy them while we can. They too can suffer during long periods of bad weather as their food is trawled from the air and consists of aerial ‘plankton’ – drifting spiders, various insects, etc. They can collect their food from all heights (up to thousands of feet) and store it in a special pouch in their throat to deliver as a kind of semi-digested ‘insect-soup’ to their hungry nestlings. Obviously, in wet weather, insects are much harder to find and many swifts are forced to leave the UK, temporarily, and fly across Europe searching for areas of high pressure where the weather will be warmer and drier (therefore with good quantities of insects) – this may involve many thousands of miles of continual flying and sometimes several days before the adults can get back to feed the nestlings – another reason for the young swifts to go into torpor for periods of time.

And, finally, in celebration of the return of these marvellous summer

birds, the words of a poem were buzzing around in my head late at night recently so I just had to get up and write them down before I lost them and this is it…

SKY-WORDS: A poem for Swifts I’m not interested in being the first to see them, Or seeing them on the earliest date, That’s not important, And I’m happy with that… I could go chasing them (I know where they are), But I won’t, I’ll wait, Until They judge it’s time, To show themselves, To me. In my small village (of only 700 people), A church and a pub, Not far, From the River Great Ouse

My animal-familiars, My shaman-birds, My swifts. Shape-changers, shape-shifters, Bringing summer, Sparkling… On black-bladed scimitar wings. Not of this earth, Climbing, flickering, Into summer’s blue, Under boiling anvils Of Cumulo-nimbus Dizzying heights, Screams tearing, The thin veil, Of sky.

And to celebrate, This summer long, Every day when I see, Or hear, swifts, I’m going to write, A sentence. But it won’t be on paper, As befits these birds, I will write in the sky, On the ether (high overhead), To celebrate their mystery, Their beauty, Their magic, Their just ‘being’, And doing what they do.

And, over the summer, It will build, Into a poem, A hymn to these dark angels, That haunt my mind, The villages and Victorian streets, On summer dusks, And that I am privileged, To share, This planet with.

The words will build into, A towering Cumulus, An aerial sky-poem, A season-long (but too brief), Eulogy (to be torn, tattered), On Autumn’s winds. But after they have left us, It will remain, Etched Into sky.

Gardening in June It’s hard to believe that June is already here but the soil is warm and the sun is strong (well, hopefully), so that means lots of lovely plants are reaching for the lapis sky. If you haven’t got ‘round to it yet, late May to early June is a good time to prune and tidy all those spring flowering perennials. Daffodil foliage is browning and dying back naturally and can be tidied away and thrown on to your compost heap. For most varieties of tulip, the law of diminishing returns applies so think about whether you might want fresh stock next year. If you do, simply pull them up. If like me, you have a Camellia that is losing its shape (also like me!), this is the best time to gently prune and of course, if your soil is not naturally acid, a good mulch of ericaceous compost round its roots will also be beneficial. If you have roses that are showing new growth from very low down the plant, the chances are they are suckers and these need to be removed. Most roses are grafted onto another’s root stock and the suckers, that is, the new distinctly different stems are from the host plant. This is often referred to as ‘reverting’ and the normal advice is to don a decent pair of gloves and pull and twist off. Care should be taken so as not to damage the roots and if this cannot be achieved, reach for your secateurs. Having warned of late frosts last month, bedding, bought and self-grown, can finally be put out in June. A regime of dead heading spent blooms so as to promote new flowers is good practice as is keeping on top of weeding and as far I’m concerned that means removing any plants that threaten the well-being of those that you want. The quickest way of making a garden look tidy is by cutting the lawn and regular mowing once or twice a week will stop weeds from germinating. But do not cut too short. Do this and you will end up with a straw coloured patch rather than a verdant vista. Other jobs this month, June is also a good time to plant pansies and polyanthus for winter and spring colour so as usual in the garden, enjoy what you have but don’t forget to look ahead also. The answer to last month’s just for fun question is, fusarium patch is a disease that affects fine grasses. This month’s question, many plants have the word palmate in their title; what does it mean? The Pantomime in March raised a very handsome profit of £2222. The Cople Players agreed to send a donation of £50 to the Sports & Social Club for their support; also £500 to the Charity ‘BEDFORD CONCERN for the HOMELESS and ROOTLESS (BeCHaR)’. A letter has been received from their Chief Executive Officer expressing their sincere thanks. This donation will help them to continue to assist some of Bedford’s most vulnerable residents through times of crisis, and enable them to offer ongoing support. The next event is the annual Barn Dance at Oak Farm on Saturday, July 21st at 7.30 p.m. Once again Paul and Heather Walsh are generously hosting this much-enjoyed fixture in the Friends’ calendar. There will be a licensed bar and Kelly’s Eye will provide the music. Tickets are now available at £13.50 per adult. Children are welcome (£5 for under 15s). Well everywhere is looking so lovely and green and all the crops are getting taller and taller and summer is well on its way – it’s a lovely time of year and I hope and your families are all well and are getting out in the sunshine.

I have decided to talk to day about VAT – dull I know – but you never know there may be something in it that is remotely helpful to you.

Any business can register for VAT – sole trader, partnership or limited co. You can voluntarily register at any time. This will mean that you will be issued with a VAT number then you have to start charging VAT at 20% (standard rate) on absolutely everything that you sell. You HAVE to register for VAT when your turnover in any 12 months reaches £81,000.

So if you are a business that mainly works for domestic customers, then ideally you don’t want to register for VAT (as it will make you 20% more expensive than a non registered business) so you need to keep your turnover below £81k. If you are a business that works mainly for other VAT registered businesses then they won’t care if you are VAT registered or not.

When you are VAT registered you have to think of yourself as a tax collector - as you will then start charging VAT on all your sales. When you do your VAT return you add up all the VAT you have charged out on your sales (Output VAT) and add up all the VAT you have suffered on your purchases (Input VAT) then pay over the difference. If you are a profitable business making standard rate sales then you should be a VAT payer. There are many VAT rules and regulations so if you have any further queries please do get in touch.
