Cruzin' in North St. PaulThe North St. Paul History Cruze draws a crowd weekly to downtown on Friday nights.

    photos by Linda Baumeister/Review

From its beginnings in the 1990s as a

feature of a summer celebration, with

only a handful of cars on display, the

History Cruze Car show has become asummer tradition in North St. Paul,

and helped to put the town on the

map for a whole new generation.

    Back in 1994, then-Mac's Dinette

owner John Pontrelli told a Review

reporter that he'd come up with a

new idea for the city's "Crazy Days"

celebration: a classic car show. The clincher: he wasn't just

    envisioning a once-a-summer event;

Pontrelli wanted to see it as a weekly,

seasonal draw. Thanks to the zeal

of car enthusiasts, both owners and

spectators, he predicted a time when

East Seventh Avenue would be filled with

gleaming cars and giddy spectators on a

regular basis all summer. Boosters would

organize it, and folks would travel from

    all over to see it.

"Hold it, and they will come," wasPontrelli's philosophy.

And they did. North St. Paul's Friday-

night car show, cruising toward its silver

anniversary, regularly packs out all the

"show" parking spots along main streets

and adjacent lots, and families come from

all over to stroll the main drag.

The show can attract anywhere from 700

vehicles to, on a balmy night, 1,800.

Along the way, the History Cruze group

organized into a nonprofit and addedeven more to the show: food, beverage,

collectibles and crafts vendors, a rotatin

list of bands and special events from

police K-9 demonstrations to visits from

the Vikings cheerleaders. The success of a huge weekly ca

show in the middle of the city didn

    come without some growing pains

    Neighbors complained about nois

and the loss of street parking, an

the city council has limited the hour

the show can operate and charges fo

police presence. But the cars, fromelderly 1900s models to, now, mid

    '70s "classics," keep rolling in.

And so do the people, from th

    guys who remember hot-rodding

their dad's old Model Ts to tots jus

the right height to see their reflec

    tions in those shiny hubcaps.

The car show is held Friday nights from

    June through mid-September.

Maplewood boasts a new, yet ages-old, attraction. Overthe last decades, the city, Ramsey County and the

    Ramsey-Washington District Watershed have worked

to secure undeveloped land along Fish Creek to help

complete a greenway from Carver Lake in Woodbury to

the Mississippi River in St. Paul.

The county owns 142 acres, and the city's effort

culminated in its purchase of 70 acres in December,

    2013.

By getting contiguous properties -- through a long

process of fundraising planners have preserved not

only wildlife corridors but a variety of typical Minnesotaenvironments: oak woodland, grassy bluffs, wetlands and

the creek itself, which grows from a trickle to the flow

that has etched out small "canyons" in rock at its St. Paul

    end.

Eventual plans are for paved trails, rustic trails and

scenic overlooks that will bring people in but keep the

area a natural site. Birders find migratory birds and

nesting warblers in the woodlands, wild turkeys and

hawks patrolling the fields and woodpeckers working

on trees in the area. Annual wildflower walks introduce

people to woodland and prairie flowers as well as routesthrough the property. And for those who think they have

to drive for hours to get "out of the city," the peaceful

    setting is a welcome oasis.

Maplewood's portion of the site offers onstreet parking

in the area near the bluff view over the Mississippi valley

on Carver Avenue and Henry Lane. Visitors are asked to

remember regular city park policies, such as keeping dogs

    on leash.

Ramsey County's portion is accessible from Point

Douglas Road off Carver Avenue Park. Hikers can

follow the creek and adjoining trails as it winds under

    Point Douglas Road.

    Taking in nature

Spring, fall, summer or winter, the Fish Creek property offers a nature getaway and gorgeous views.

The indooor mall was hailed in the

1960s as the new "town square,"

where people would shop, eat, do

    business and congregate, as they'd

done on main streets and villagegreens for centuries.

    Planners gradually realized that

    malls wouldn't replace all those

    functions, and some such as

    Apache Plaza in St. Anthony

    Village which were obviously

    built with capacious interiors to

    house lingering crowds have been

    razed.

But Maplewood Mall, whichmarked its 40th anniversary in

    fall 2014 with gala back-to-school

    events, is still going strong.

    Farming or commerce?

    The contrast between northern

    Maplewood's early-20th-century

    and more recent identities could,

until a few years ago, be seen from

one spot on White Bear Avenue

near Lydia Avenue. On one side: the huge mall and

    its constellation of bank branches,

    restaurants, specialty shops and

discount stores that seem to be

    drawn by its gravitational pull.

    On the other: the century-old

    Bruentrup farmhouse, barn and

outbuildings, which used to lookacross the avenue onto fields, a

    small woods and a pond.

On Jan. 23, 1968 the fledgling

city of Maplewood had only been

    incorporated in 1957 plans

    were announced to build an

    $8 million, 125-acre shopping

    area in Maplewood, near the

    newly constructed Interstate 694.

Though residents thought of thearea as farmland, and used to take

    Sunday drives around the park-

    like property, new housing and

    businesses were coming in, and

    Maplewood didn't want to lose

Wisconsin, says Pete Boulay of the Maplewood Area

    Historical Society.

Many locals initially opposed the mall's construc-

tion, Boulay says, fearing the rural area around White

Bear Avenue would become commercialized. As

anyone who drives down White Bear Avenue today

    can see, that's what happened.

What was once a quiet rural area is now a thrivingcommercial district.

"People are always quick to point out that Maplewood

Mall is no Rosedale Mall," Boulay says. "Well it

never was. In reality, the Maplewood Mall became a

bigger thing with an active and evolving commercial

    area around it."

"Evolving" meant, for the Bruentrup farm, moving

the home, barn and outbuildings to County Road

    D. Their former site now houses Michaels and Half

    Price Books.

    The plan: continued change

In its 40 years, the mall has seen former anchors

like Woolworths and Walgreens come and go. Baskin

Robbins and Sbarro (with its two-for-a-quarter video

arcade) once packed people in, while other store

such as Sears, Claire's and Spencer's Gifts have with

    stood the test of time.

The yellow and orange dcor of the 1970s wasreplaced with white plaster and palm trees during the

1988 renovation. That renovation expanded the mal

to 718,000 square feet, adding 40 new stores, and

moved the food court to the west wing.

Now, at 926,000 square feet with more than 130

stores, the mall has a long-term, big-vision plan tha

began in 2002 when it was purchased by the Simon

    Property Group.

Major renovations from 2011 to 2012 included

outside, reconstructed entrances and additional landscaping, while interior changes included a redesigned

    food court and new

    flooring with a com-

    bination of ceramic

    tiles and carpeted

    paths. Restrooms and

    common areas were

    remodeled and energy-

    efficient lighting was

    installed throughout.

    While fashion styles,

    decorating trends and

    shopping habits have

    changed over the

    years, one thing hasn't

    kids' attraction to the

    mall's double-decker

    Venetian carousel. It

    was handcrafted in Italy

and assembled inside the mall in

    1998, and thousands of children

and their parents have taken a spin

    on it over the years.

    Certainly, the shoppers who

crowded the mall at its 1974

    opening never imagined a day

when there wouldn't be a Powers,

    a Dayton's or a Woolworth's there

or when the mall would host

    "Asian fusion" restaurants, a "brow

    studio," charging stations for cell

    phones and free wi-fi.

    Nor could they have

    envisioned leaving

    Facebook comment

    for Simon marketing

    and business directo

    Timothy Pothen and

    mall manager Jennife

    Lewis as the two gathe

    feedback and conside

    the mall's next moves.

    But Pothen still get

    to hear compliments

    in person, too. "My

    favorite part is when

    I get to hear those

    shoppers who shopped

    here years and year

    ago ... and they come

in and they're wowed by how good

    the property looks," he says.

The carousel attracts fans of all ages in its place of honor at

    Maplewood Mall.
