David Staniger enters his 15th season at the helm of the CSS men’s basketball program in 2014-15. Staniger is the winningest coach in pro-gram history with 169 wins at the college.

His Saints squads have won two shared regular season conference crowns (2005-06, 2008-09) and four tournament titles (‘04, ‘06, ‘07, ’09). Staniger led the Saints to the NAIA National Tour-nament for the first time in school history in 2004.

Through his first 14 seasons, Staniger has pro-duced a CBA Draft Pick, a two-time First Team Academic All-American, two All-Americans and 25 all-conference players. Will Maupins was selected as the 17th overall pick in the second round by the CBA’s Great Falls Explorers in the 2007 draft. Brett Tester became the first CSS Athlete to earn First Team Capital One Academic All-American honors in back-to-back seasons.

A fiery competitor, his teams are consistently known for their aggressive defensive pressure and up-tempo running game. “We play defense to generate offense, not to stop the other team,” says Staniger.

Before coming to St. Scholastica, Coach Staniger was the head assistant coach at Augsburg Col-lege in Minneapolis. During his five seasons at Augsburg, the Auggies compiled a 94-35 record, won two MIAC championships, and he was part of a two-time coach of the year staff. He also helped direct the Auggies to two NCAA National Tournament appearances in 1998 and 1999.

While at Augsburg, Staniger helped develop De-vean George into a first round NBA draft choice. George was selected 23rd overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1999 NBA draft. George was the first Division III player ever selected in the first round and now has three NBA champion-ship rings. George most recently played with the Golden State Warriors during the 2009-10 sea-son.

Including his success with George, Staniger has

now coached the leading 3-point shooter (3-pt FG Made) in school history at both Augsburg and St. Scholastica as Saints senior Derek Johnson reached the top of the list in 2006-07.

Staniger graduated from St. Scholastica in 1989 with dual degrees in Business Management and Sports/Recreation Management. A Chisholm, Minn., native, he played for Hall of Fame high school coach Bob McDonald who is the all-time winningest coach in Minnesota high school his-tory.

Before joining the coaching ranks, Staniger worked for the Fargo-Moorhead Fever of the Continental Basketball Association.

MarShaan Johnson joins Coach Staniger’s Men’s Basketball staff for the 2013-14 season.

The Minneapolis native played two seasons for the Saints from 2011-13. He finished with 55 career blocks in those two seasons and averaged 6.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in 51 career games.

Andrew Schmitz returns to his alma mater and joins Coach Staniger and the St. Scholastica men’s basketball program in 2014-15 as Associate Head Coach.

Schmitz, who graduated from The College of St. Scholastica in 2008 with a Degree on Secondary Education Social Studies, returns to CSS after spending the last five seasons as head men’s basketball coach at Itasca Community College.

The Hinckley, Minnesota native played for Coach Staniger from 2004-06 and the 2007-08 seasons. Schmitz was a two-time team captain and was an All-UMAC choice in 2007-08 and an honorable mention selection in 2005-06.

He was named the team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2005-06 and 2007-08 seasons. Schmitz played his freshman season at Central Lakes College where was named All-Northern Division.

Schmitz was a student assistant for the CSS men’s basketball program during the 2006-07 season and was an assistant for one year upon graduating in 2008-09, the last time the Saints won the UMAC Regular Season and Tournament championships.

Schmitz currently resides in Duluth and is an Academic Advisor for Upward Bound at St. Scholastica.

Caring for athletes is part of our bigger commitment to the community. Essentia Health

donates more than $600,000 of our sports medicine services to the region’s schools each year.

We are the official team physicians to the Duluth Huskies, UMD, UWS, Hibbing Community College,

and The College of St. Scholastica. We’re medical directors for Grandma’s Marathon, the NorthShore

Inline Marathon and company physicians for the Minnesota Ballet. And we’re certified athletic

trainers for high school athletes at Duluth Central, Duluth East, Esko, Hayward, Hermantown,

Hibbing, Marshall, Northwestern, Proctor and Superior.

To us, that’s what sharing expert orthopaedic care is all about.

Tom has been at The College of St. Scholastica since August 2002 and is presently working with Football and Baseball. He also has worked on call for SMDC (St. Mary’s Hospital-Duluth). Tom graduated from CSS with a Master of Arts in Exercise Physiology in 2002 and a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Physiology in 2001. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association and Minnesota Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Mid-America’s gateway to the sea, Duluth’s harbor hosts ships from dozens of nations each year. Duluthians enjoy the beauty and sport of four seasons. In close proximity to the College are beaches, biking and jogging trails, ski resorts, cross-country ski trails, boating and fishing sites and rinks for skating, curling and hockey. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is close enough for week-end visits.

Duluth offers a wide variety of cultural activities as well. Each year the city’s auditorium hosts a long list of popular entertainers. The Minnesota Ballet, Duluth Playhouse, and Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra provide exciting year-round schedules. Duluth’s many historical attractions include Glensheen, a 39-room neo-Jacobean style mansion built on the Lake Superior shore, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, and the Marine Museum at Canal Park.

Duluth’s low crime rate, high quality of life and natural beauty frequently earn it high rankings in “best places to live” surveys. Recently, the nonprofit American Institute for Economic Research ranked Duluth one of America’s best small metropolitan areas for college students.

In June 2014, Duluth was voted “America’s Best Outdoor City” by Outside Magazine

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner (2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order.EXAMPLE If there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc.If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc.(3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes(4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams.Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points.

2014 INDUCTION CLASSDel Genereau – Men’s Hockey Coach/Athletic Director – 1972-1977Genereau was hired by fellow St. Scholastica Athletics Hall of Famer President Father Francis X. Shea to lead the institution’s first varsity athletics program, Men’s Hockey. Genereau, a former Duluth Cathedral High School Coach who was retired prior to taking the St. Scholastica gig, quickly built up the men’s hockey program into prominence. He guided the Saints to the 1975 NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championships and a 1976 runner-up finish. He was 72-36-3 in four seasons as head coach. Genereau continued as Athletic Director through the 1977 school year. Genereau was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Genereau passed away in 1988.

Randy Norgard – Men’s Hockey – 1973-77Norgard was part of two NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championship squads in his time at CSS. A defenseman from Duluth Central High School, Norgard was named a NAIA All-American in 1977 and a three-time All-Tournament team selection. The three-time All-Conference choice was named the team’s MVP for the program’s second championship run in 1976-77 and was also a two-year captain.

Jeanne Fleck – Women’s Cross Country – 1994-96Fleck was the first CSS runner to individually qualify for a national meet multiple times as she competed in three NAIA National Championship events. Fleck first competed on the CSS cross country team as a 29-year-old sophomore. She was the team’s Most Valuable Runner all three seasons and became the first to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Individual Title in 1996. Fleck was a recipient of the 1996-97 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.

Jen Quale – Women’s Basketball – 1996-2000Quale was a two-time NAIA First Team All-Region selection in 1997 and 1998. She currently ranks second all-time in the St. Scholastica Women’s Basketball program with 1,574 career points. She led the team in scoring in three different seasons and was a member of back-to-back UMAC Championship squads. Quale has the most field goals made in a career in program history (624) and also ranks in the top 10 in career rebounds (497), free throws made (196) and steals (190). She was a four-time All-UMAC selection and was also named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Quale was the recipient of the 1997-98 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.

Chris Lorentz – Softball – 1997-2001Lorentz holds numerous program records for the CSS Softball team. She is the only player in program history to record at least 100 hits, runs scored, RBIs and stolen bases in a career. The two-time NAIA All-Region selection holds program records for games played in a career (183), runs scored in a career (175) and season (50), triples in a career (18) and stolen bases in a season (32) and career (109). The 109 stolen bases is tied for the Minnesota Collegiate record. She ranks second all-time in career hits (209) and is a four-time All-UMAC selection. She is a member of CSS Softball’s 25th Anniversary Team and was a NFCA Scholar-Athlete in 2001. She was also a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete nominee. Lorentz also played soccer at CSS where she was named all-conference in 1998.

Neil Runbeck – Men’s Soccer – 1998-2002Runbeck was the men’s soccer program’s career leader in points for over a decade until it was broke last fall by Joe Watt. Runbeck’s 157-point total is currently second overall. He led the team in scoring all four seasons. He holds the record for most shots in a game (14) and is tied for most assists in a game (4). His 20 goals and 15 assists during the 2001 season both rank in the top five. Runbeck was named NAIA First Team All-Region, Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, UMAC Player of the Year and Team MVP that season. Career goals was another record that Runbeck had to relinquish last fall to Andrew Jenkins. Runbeck has the second-most career goals (57) and assists (43) in program history. Runbeck was a four-time all-conference selection, including a two-time first team choice. Runbeck also played four years as defenseman on the men’s hockey team and was named to the NCHA All-Academic Team in 2002.
