UMD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The University of Minnesota Duluth graduated a highly-touted senior class following the 2013-14 season but return an experienced squad led by four seniors that gives head coach Annette Wiles plenty of reason for optimism. Between Katrina Newman (‘14) and Hannah Rutten (‘14), the Bulldogs graduated 29.1 points per game from a season ago, but a four-member senior class will provide plenty of scoring punch as the Bulldogs look to improve on a season that saw the team go .500 in the conference and ousted from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament by a Concordia University, St. Paul team that went on to make a significant NCAA Tournament run. “To know that we had Concordia, out on the road at their place and seeing Coach Fessler this Summer and hearing that our game was the biggest challenge for them in the postseason tournament, as far as our conference, that’s as much a positive as you can take from a loss,” said head coach Annette Wiles, who returns for her sixth season. “We played them with the energy and battle-back spirit that we had. I was very proud of the women’s effort, but obviously disappointed that it had to come to an early end for us.”

WHO’S BACK? Danielle Flood and Alyssa Kerkhoff traded off guard positions throughout 2013-14, and Coach Wiles expects the pair of senior guards to lead the Bulldog offense again this year. Flood posted a career-high 12.0 points per game and shot 40.6 percent from beyond the arc a season ago, while Kerkhoff provided defense and key rebounds, second-best on the team with 5.9 boards per game. “I’m very excited about our seniors and their leadership in and out of the locker room. All four of them bring a unique spirit in all of the different dimensions of a college basketball season. You’re going to have certain leadership out on the floor. Obviously, we look heavily to Danielle and Alyssa for a lot of that leadership. They both have bounced

back and forth between the point and the 2-guard.” Additionally, UMD returns guard/forward Jessica Newman who emerged from out of her sister Katrina’s shadow last season and will now be the lone sister on the team for the first time in her career. The highlight of Newman’s season in 2013-14 was hitting a pair of go-ahead shots in the final minutes against Minot State on Dec. 14. Newman averaged 8.4 points per game a year ago and will look to provide more offensive punch in her senior campaign. Senior guard Shauni Payeur played in seven games for UMD a season ago, but her leadership goes beyond what fans see on the court. “You look at the leadership that’s brought off the court and in the locker room, Jess and Shauni certainly bring a loud voice. When you talk about all four of them as four-year players in the program, it’s exciting in terms of their back-court leadership and what they each bring to the game.” The Bulldogs boast a pair of juniors who have seen significant playing time in their first two seasons: forward Taylor Meyer and guard Taylor Dillinger. While Meyer has appeared prominently in each of the past two years as a solid post presence for the Bulldogs, Coach Wiles believes that the best is yet to come from Dillinger. “Taylor Dillinger started on and off for us throughout the year. I hope she has an injury-free season. I’m looking forward to seeing both of them in a lot of action. Their experience brings a wealth of presence.” Sophomore center Allyson Harris played significant minutes a season ago due to injuries and should see her time on the court increase this year. Sophomore forward Kenzie Kane played her best basketball down the stretch for the Bulldogs and will look to improve upon that this season, while sophomore guard Jenna Orr should continue to see time as a back-up at the point for UMD.

WHO’S NEW? UMD adds five newcomers to the roster in 2014-15, including

local product Hailey Kontny from just across the bridge in Superior, Wisconsin. Kontny was a four-year started for Superior High School and an All-Wisconsin Division I First Team selection last season. Another Wisconsin native, Amanda Hunt joins the Bulldogs after receiving All-North Shore Conference honors in each of the past three seasons while playing at Grafton High School. She is one of three 6-foot-tall players that Coach Wiles will add this season. “We know Rayna Sherow is going to do a lot for us on the inside. You talk about 2-guards, Amanda Hunt will add versatility to our three-point play, and of course, Ms. Superior. I think Hailey Kontny will add a lot. She’s a combo guard. She can utilize the ball off the dribble and provide us, hopefully, with improved defensive effort, which will be one of her hurdles

she’ll have to climb as a college player. We’re looking forward to all five of our freshmen giving us great minutes this year.” Sherow, a St. Paul native and Anna Monke of Fergus Falls round out the 6-foot group while former Osseo Senior High School star Ayo Porte checks in at 5-foot-11-inches tall. “Anna Monke is certainly a player [that will make an immediate impact]. She comes from a very successful Fergus Falls team that has dominated girl’s basketball in the state of Minnesota. She’s a player that just speaks success and winning,” Wiles said, and of Porte: “I look forward to seeing her athleticism on the perimeter as well as on the inside.”

ROMANO GYMNASIUM

For over half a century, the venerable Romano Gymnasium has been the home of University of Minnesota Duluth basketball. The UMD men have parlayed their home-court advantage into a .751 winning percentage and the Bulldog women have enjoyed even more success, win-ning at a .772 clip at the on-campus facility.

Since the 1979-80 season, UMD has posted a sparkling 321-95 mark at home, winning at least 10 games on its own court in all but 12 seasons. The Bulldogs recorded 10 or more home victories in seven straight seasons from 1984-85 through 1990-91 and set a school record with 15 home victories in 1988-89, a season during which UMD made its second straight national tournament appearance. In addition, the Bulldogs have turned in just one

losing record at Romano Gymnasium in the last 29 seasons.

The Bulldogs are also a perfect 20-0 all-time in postseason games at Romano Gymnasium, a record that included a 16-0 mark in NAIA District play in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now a member of the NCAA and one of the nation’s premier circuits, the North Sun Intercollegiate Conference, UMD continues to bring the coun-try’s top Division II teams to campus.

Romano Gym can hold up to 2,759 specta-tors since undergoing an extensive $2 million face lift following the 1986-87 season. The facility was named in honor of the late Ralph Romano, UMD’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1969 to 1983.

Annette Wiles embarks on her 21st season as a collegiate head basketball coach in 2013-14 and her sixth season as the head coach at UMD.

Since her arrival at UMD, Wiles has brought stability and success to the Bulldog program guiding her team into the post season in each of the last five seasons and to the NCAA Division II playoffs twice. She’s also produced nine All-NSIC selections, one NSIC Player of the Year, one NSIC Freshman of the Year, and two NSIC Defensive Players of the Year. In addition, 34 of her Bulldogs have attained NSIC All-Academic Team honors while the team has collectively compiled a grade point average of 3.31 during that five-year stretch.

Prior to taking the reigns in Duluth, Wiles served as the head coach at her alma mater, Fort Hays State University (Kansas) for eight seasons after coaching Bethany College (Kansas) the previous seven. Wiles now owns a career collegiate coaching record of 380-198, including an 83-58 mark at UMD.

In eight winters at Fort Hays State, Wiles guided the Tigers - who competed in both the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference during her tenure - to a record of 136-92. Wiles led Fort Hays State to its first-ever NCAA II tournament appearance in 2004-05, and helped produce 15 all-conference selections as well as three Academic All-Americans.

While overseeing the women’s basketball program at Bethany College, Wiles put together a career record of 164-49. She led the Swedes to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Tournament on four occasions, advancing as far as the final eight in 1995. Wiles finished with 20-plus wins in each of her seven seasons patrolling the Bethany sidelines, and was named the Kansas Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1999. She also coached 25 Academic All-Americans at Bethany and her 1998 club’s 3.71 cumulative grade point average was the highest of any NAIA squad. Wiles launched her coaching career as an assistant on staff at Fort Hays State for two seasons (1991-93) following the conclusion of her college playing days.

Born in Hunter, Kan., Wiles starred for four seasons at Fort Hays State and helped lead her team to a NAIA national championship as a senior in 1990-91. A two-time NAIA All-American and member of both the Tiger Sports (class of 2000) and RMAC (2003) Halls of Fame, Wiles graduated as Fort Hays State’s leader in career points (2,407) and rebounds (961). Her outstanding collegiate playing career was recognized when she was one of 12 players selected to the RMAC All-Time Women’s Basketball Team.

Wiles, who makes her home in Duluth, received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Fort Hays State in 1991, and earned a Master of Science in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration two years later from that same institution.

STEPH REITERaSSiStant coacH, SecondSeaSon

Four years after putting the wraps on a rewarding playing career at UMD, Steph Reiter returned to her alma mater in May 2013 to take over as the Bulldogs’ assistant coach. Reiter, a native of Coon Rapids, Minn., and a Blaine High School alumna, has been employed since last July as the director of women’s basketball operations at North Dakota State University, where she was involved with team travel

coordination, video exchange, recruiting correspondence and overseeing community service event. Prior to joining the Bison staff, Reiter was a University of Sioux Falls graduate assistant coach for two seasons

(2010-12) and her responsibilities included film exchange, preliminary breakdown of scout, monitoring academic progress, coaching the junior varsity, and assisting in practice and game preparation. She began her coaching career in an assistant role at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Upper Iowa University, serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator for the Midwest region and its academic supervision during the 2009-10 season. Reiter, 27, was a member of the Bulldog basketball program for five seasons (she sat out all of 2005-06 with a knee injury) and started 22 of 113 games in the backcourt. In addition to securing NSIC/North Central Conference All-Academic honors on three occasions, she also made the dean’s list all 10 of her semesters at UMD. Reiter, who co-captained the Bulldogs as a senior in 2008-09, graduated from UMD in 2009 with a B.F.A. degree in graphic arts and, three years later, earned a Master’s degree in business administration from Sioux Falls.

HAILEY HOUSERGraduate aSSiStant coacH, FirSt SeaSon

Hailey Houser joins the UMD women’s basketball staff as a graduate assistant for the 2014-15 season. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Houser graduated this past spring after a four-year playing career at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Houser received a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and criminology and will be continuing her education in UMD’s Masters of Education program.

“Hailey is a great addition to our coaching staff,” said Wiles. “Her NCAA Division I playing experience, and ability to teach our post players, will prove to be an important asset to our team.” While playing for the Kangaroos, Houser earned Summit League academic all-conference honors, as well as being named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, and last season, Academic All-Western Athletic Conference. Additionally, she coached AAU summer teams Kansas City Dell Lamb Running Angels 13 & Under in 2011 and the Kansas Eclipse 13U, 14U, 15U, and 16U the past two seasons. Houser was selected to be a part of the “So, You Want to be a Coach?” program at the 2014 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) national convention in Nashville.

UMD WOMEN’S BASKETBALLNSIC PLAYER OF THE YEARF Carly Boag - Minot State

Boag finished the 2013-14 NSIC season ranked as the leader in scoring (20.9), rebounding (10.7), field goal percentage (57.7) and steals (66) while leading the Beavers to a tied for fifth place overall and second in the NSIC North Division. Boag was a dominate force, scoring 30 or more points in conference games three times, 20 or more 14 times and recorded 11 double-doubles. She finished with 39 points, breaking the Minot State single game record for points, and pulled down 18 rebounds against Southwest Minnesota State – the same night she became the Beavers’ all-time career scoring leader with 1,718 points. During that weekend, she averaged 33.5 points per game and 18.0 rebounds per game to secure her second NSIC Player of the Week honor in 2013-14. It was the fifth time in two seasons she was named the conference’s Player of the Week. Boag also broke the NSIC’s single-season scoring mark with 460 points, surpassing Minnesota Duluth’s Jheri Booker’s record of 431 points set in 2009-10. She is ranked third overall in NCAA Division II in active career scoring average (18.5) and rebound average (10.4).

NSIC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEARG Emily Schulte - Augustana (S.D.)

Schulte is averaging 13.7 points per game this year for the Vikings. Schulte currently is averaging 2.8 steals per game this season for Augustana, with a 2.7 average in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Schulte’s 2.8 steals per game average ranks 22nd nationally as of Feb. 25. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native snatched a career-high seven steals this year against Sioux Falls on Jan. 24. Schulte has had 15 games this season in which she has recorded at least three steals. The senior guard been especially tough on the defensive end in the NSIC, with five games of at least four steals in conference play. Schulte also has displayed her shot-blocking abilities this season, sending back a career-high three shots at St. Cloud State on Feb. 1 earlier this year. Schulte’s 15 blocks this year mark a new career high for blocks in a season for her. With her 73 steals this year, Schulte became the only women’s basketball player in Augustana history with three seasons of at least 70 steals. The former O’Gorman High School standout currently ranks fourth all time in Vikings’ history with 237 career steals. She is only one of 10 players in team history with 200-or-more steals in her career. On Feb. 14, Schulte became just the eighth player women’s basketball history with at least 1,000 points, 300 rebounds, and 300 assists in her career.

NSIC FRESHMAN OF THE YEARC Sam Knecht - Sioux Falls

Sam Knecht’s first year with the Cougars program was a success as she started each of the 19 games that she played in. During conference play, Knecht averaged 8.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 0.9 blocks per game while also shooting 37.9% from the field. She was able to play her best when the stakes were the highest as she averaged 12.0 points and 12.5 rebounds in the Cougars two showdowns with crosstown rival Augustana. She also recorded five double-doubles in NSIC play this year. Knecht’s biggest strength comes on the boards where her rebounding average (7.6 rpg) and offensive rebounding average (2.95 rpg) are the top among all freshman players. She also reached double-digit scoring marks ten times during conference play and hit double-digit rebounds in six games.

NSIC COACH OF THE YEARCurt Fredrickson - Northern State

Curt Fredrickson won 21 of 744 career victories this season on his way to a NSIC North Division Title. In his 35th season at the helm of the Wolves, Fredrickson has been named NSIC Coach of the Year four times (1991-92, 1996-97, 2010-11 and 2013-14). His Wolves earned their first national ranking this season since the 2007 season as they reached as high as No. 17 in the nation. The Wolves NSIC North Division Title is the first of any kind at NSU in any sport since 2005. NSU exceed expectation this season, as they were picked to finish ninth overall in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll and fifth in their division. Their 17-5 mark was good enough for third overall in the NSIC and was a three game cushion in the NSIC North Division final standings.
