COACHING STAFF

Former Wake Forest standout and Tusculum College head coach Adell Harris is in her third season as head coach of the UNCW women’s basketball program. Harris became the 10th head coach in school history on May 3, 2012.

Tasked with overseeing one of the youngest teams in the nation last year, Harris piloted the Seahawks to wins over league foes Towson and William & Mary, as well as non-conference foe Northern Kentucky. She also led the team to another solid appearance in the CAA Women’s Basketball Championship, helping her squad post a first-round victory over the Tribe before bowing out in a closely-contested contest to eventual tournament champion James Madison.

Individually, junior guard Kelva Atkins enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2013-14 as she ranked among the top four players in the CAA in points (15.8 ppg), rebounds (5.5 rpg), assists (3.2 apg) and steals (2.1 spg) en route to earning Second-Team All-CAA honors as well as All-Tournament Team accolades at both the CAA Championship and Cancun Challenge. Freshman Brie Mobley also shined by averaging 11.7 points per game to garner CAA All-Rookie Team distinction.

In her first season in the Port City, Harris led the Seahawks to victories over league foes Georgia State, Northeastern and William & Mary. She also guided the squad to an impressive showing in the 2013 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship with an opening-round triumph over George Mason and near upset of eventual tournament champion Delaware in the quarterfinals.

Harris was also instrumental in her players’ individual development during the 2012-13 season. Senior Karneshia Garrett was a Third-Team All-CAA selection as she led the team in both scoring (10.8) and rebounding (11.0) while Atkins earned All-Tournament Team honors at the CAA Championship.

Harris, 34, took over the Seahawk program following a successful three-year stint as head coach of Tusculum. She guided the NCAA Division II school to a 61-30 overall record, back-to-back Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament championships (2010 and 2011) and three consecutive appearances to the NCAA Tournament.

In 2011-12, Harris guided the Pioneers to a 17-11 overall mark as the team posted victories over defending DII national champion and top-ranked Clayton State and 2012 NCAA Champion Shaw en route to the school’s fifth straight NCAA Southeast Regional berth.

Tusculum opened the 2010-11 season ranked third in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll and finished the campaign with a 21-9 record as it captured the SAC regular season crown and repeated as league tournament champions.

In her inaugural season with the Pioneers in 2009-10, Harris guided Tusculum to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight after capturing the program’s first Southeast Region Championship. She also led the team to its inaugural post-season ranking, capping the campaign as the ninth-ranked team in the final USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Harris was instrumental in the development of many of the top players in Tusculum history. Guard Jasmine Gunn was named the program’s first consensus Division II All-American, Daktronics Southeast Region Player of the Year and SAC Player of the Year after ranking among the top-10 players in the nation in scoring (21.6) during her junior season. Gunn repeated as SAC Player of the Year the following season to finish her career second in school history and third in league history with 2,180 points.

In addition, guard Kendal Baxter set a school and league record with 105 three-pointers during her freshman season on her way to earning SAC All-Rookie Team accolades. Center Catherine Hintz earned MVP honors at the 2011 Food Lion SAC Tournament and was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional.

Prior to taking the reins at Tusculum, Harris spent six seasons at UNC Asheville (2003-09), serving as an assistant and associate head coach. She helped the Bulldogs capture their first Big South Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006-07 and mentored nine All-Big South Conference honorees, including a pair of BSC Rookie of the Year honorees in Brittany Hendley (2004) and Kyla Jones (2007).

Harris was a four-year letter winner at Wake, playing in 106 games during her career with the Demon Deacons from 1998-2002. She paced Coach Charlene Curtis’ squad with 108 assists and averaged 4.6 points per game during her senior season as co-captain. Harris, who finished her career in 10th place on the WFU career assists chart, graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology.

A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, Harris began her coaching career as an assistant coach at her alma mater in High Point, T. Wingate Andrews High School, during the 2002-03 campaign. She also served as head coach of the Piedmont X-Press AAU team from 1998-2003.

In addition to serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator, Tingley is responsible for organizing the team’s annual high school coaches’ clinic and is a liaison to the academic services office.

In her first two seasons with the program, Tingley has played a key role in the development of the Seahawks’ backcourt. In her first season, senior Tawanna Lee ranked among the top 10 players in the CAA in three-point field goals made (1.9 per game), assists (2.9) and three-point field goal percentage (.335) while guard Kelva Atkins earned All-Tournament Team honors at the CAA Championship after leading the Seahawks to a first-round victory over George Mason and a near upset of eventual tournament champion Delaware.

Last season, Atkins enjoyed a breakout campaign as she ranked among the top four players in the CAA in points (15.8 per game), rebounds (5.5), assists (3.2) and steals (2.1) en route to receiving second team All-CAA honors as well as All-Tournament Team accolades at both the CAA Championship and Cancun Challenge. Freshman Brie Mobley also shined under Tingley’s guidance, averaging 11.7 points per game to garner CAA All-Rookie Team distinction.

Tingley joined the Seahawks program in the summer of 2012 from Kennesaw State where she spent one year as an assistant coach and served as interim head coach following the retirement of head coach Colby Tilley at the end of the season. In her lone campaign with the Owls, Tingley helped the program record its first Atlantic Sun Tournament victory and played a key role in the development of Atlantic Sun Conference Rookie-of-the-Year Taylor Mills.

Prior to her time in Georgia, Tingley spent four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Seton Hall. Tingley was responsible for signing a pair of All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selections and also had a recruiting class ranked in the Top 25.

Tingley began her coaching career as an assistant at Robert Morris in 2002-03 before moving to Manhattan. In three seasons with the Jaspers, Tingley was responsible for recruiting two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team members. In addition, Tingley monitored the academic progress of the women’s basketball student-athletes, helping the program receive a No. 13 ranking in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Academic Team Honor Roll for the 2004-05.

A native of Coudersport, Pa., Tingley is no stranger to the Colonial Athletic Association. She began her career at West Virginia before transferring to Delaware. Tingley helped the Blue Hens capture the 2001 America East Conference championship and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In their first season in the CAA in 2001-02, the Blue Hens advanced to the Postseason WNIT.

A two-time Dean’s List honoree at Delaware, Tingley graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Recreation and Park Management in 2002.

Veteran coach Richard Moore is in his third season as an assistant coach with the UNCW women’s basketball program.

Moore oversees the development of the Seahawks’ post players in addition to serving as the team’s shooting coach. He also serves as the point person for all initial eligibility and enrollment for incoming players.

During his time in the Port City, Moore has had a profound impact on the team’s post players. In 2012-13, senior Karneshia Garrett was a Third-Team All-CAA selection as she led the team in both scoring (10.8) and rebounding (11.0) while ranking among the top 20 players in the NCAA in rebounds per game. Last season, freshman Ryan Flowers blossomed into one of the top underclassmen forwards in the Colonial Athletic Association, ranking seventh in the CAA in rebounding (7.7) while also averaging 6.6 points per game.

Moore joined the Seahawks from George Washington, where he spent four seasons as an assistant coach. Moore assisted in the development of four all-conference honorees for the Colonials, including three-time First-Team All-Atlantic 10 selection Jessica Adair, a 2009 draft pick of the Phoenix Mercury who was a member of the 2011 WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx. Moore also helped the squad to a Postseason WNIT appearance in 2009 and was responsible for a pair of top-60 recruiting classes, according to annual rankings conducted by ESPN.com.

Prior to joining the Colonials, Moore served as assistant and head post-graduate men’s coach for three seasons at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va. He handled basketball operations, player recruitment, development and placement, scheduling and film exchange while working with the Colonels’ post-graduate squad.

No stranger to the Tar Heel State, Moore spent nine seasons as associate women’s basketball coach at Belmont Abbey College, where he helped the Crusaders capture five Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference titles and reach four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. During Moore’s tenure, eight players received all-conference accolades and three players were recognized as league player-of-the-year.

Moore received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1989. Moore played two seasons with the Knights after beginning his collegiate career at Hagerstown Junior College and Mount Olive. He helped guide FDU to an ECAC Metro title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 1988 before serving as a volunteer assistant coach during his senior campaign.

HISTORY AND RECORDS

TRASK COLISEUM

The Raiford G. Trask Coliseum has not only served as the cornerstone of UNCW’s athletic program, but also as the region’s showpiece since the late 1970s.

With the capacity split between seating above the playing surface and the floor level, the facility seats 5,500 fans for basketball events.

The arena was officially dedicated on Nov. 26, 1977 when the UNCW men’s basketball team battled Wake Forest before a sellout crowd, losing to the nationally-ranked Demon Deacons, 83-79. It was also the site of the Seahawks’ inaugural Colonial Athletic Association victory when the team edged George Mason, 66-64, on Jan. 5, 1985.

The facility is a versatile one, serving as the home floor for the men’s and women’s basketball teams while also providing space for physical education classes. It contains three general classrooms, one lecture classroom, a physical measurements laboratory, two handball and racquetball courts in addition to faculty and administrative offices.

Recent improvements have kept the arena in excellent condition. The inside of the arena recently received major upgrades with the addition of a state-of-the-art video scoreboard as well as digital display boards on both the scorer’s table and press row.

Trask Coliseum has served as the host for several major events. The Colonial Athletic Association held its 1986 women’s basketball and 1996 women’s volleyball championships at the facility. In 1998, Trask Coliseum was the site of a Federation Cup women’s tennis semifinal match between the United States and France. Several of the world’s top-ranked women’s professional players convened on Wilmington for the ESPN-televised event.

The National Basketball Association’s Washington Wizards also called Trask Coliseum its pre-season training home for three seasons from 2001-03. Hometown favorite Michael Jordan was a familiar site on campus for those training sessions. The Charlotte Bobcats have also trained at the facility, using the site for pre-season activities on three occasions.

Numerous concert and stage performers have also appeared in the arena as part of the North Carolina Azalea Festival, including Bill Cosby, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, The Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Charlie Daniels, The Righteous Brothers, The Beach Boys, The Four Tops, Willie Nelson, Gladys Knight, and, most recently, country star Brad Paisley and pop icon Jessica Simpson.
