President’s Report Envision Tomorrow.....the slogan and the philosophy behind a major initiative to renew the Sarnia

campus infrastructure to assure success of Lambton College for generations to come. Planning for this

campus renewal project, the largest in College history and supported by the work of The Lambton

College Foundation, was a highlight of 2014-15.

With significant community participation, concerted advocacy effort was focused on securing grant

funding for a planned Centre for Health Education and Sustainable Care. By year end, a significant

financial commitment to the project was made by the County of Lambton in support of a large

Federal/Provincial grant funding proposal.

A modern, spacious Recreation and Fitness Complex was also in the planning stages, in concert with the

Lambton College Students Administrative Council.

In 2014-15 a Strategic Mandate Agreement between Lambton College and the Ministry of Training,

Colleges and Universities was signed. This document clearly articulates the strengths of Lambton

College and its strong connection with the communities it serves. As the County’s only post-secondary

institution, the Agreement recognizes the College’s responsibility to provide a comprehensive range of

academic programs and credentials, while defining Lambton’s areas of programming specialty.

MTCU Financial Health & Sustainability Funding enabled critical efficiency improvements to enhance

service to students and increased administrative efficiency College-wide.

MTCU Productivity Improvement Funding supported two major projects: a new Academic Program

Prioritization, Revitalization and Rationalization policy focused on quality and relevance of College

programming; and development of online courses offered through Ontario Learn, supporting the

College’s fast growing online education focus.

Along with all Ontario colleges and universities, Lambton College drafted a policy and protocol on sexual

assault and sexual violence, with input from students, legal experts and community organizations.

With financial assistance from the Ontario Centres of Excellence, the College launched The Cube, a

centre to encourage and support entrepreneurialism within the student body and across the broader

community.

The College celebrated student success: the winning performances of our Fire Combat Challenge team;

award-winning ICET students; the dedicated work of the Enactus group; and record-setting season of

the mens’ basketball team. Together with the Students Administrative Council, the College supported

critical mental health initiatives through the inspiring, student-led jack.org chapter.

Quality was at the forefront at Lambton as the college system in Ontario prepares for a new

accreditation process in the coming years.

Lambton’s significant research portfolio continued to expand, with a focus on support for the region’s

burgeoning bio-industry.

The College looks to an exciting future, building on the strong performance of the past year and decades

of service to students and community.

Academics A number of new programs were offered in 2014-15, in both full-time and part-time delivery:

Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management, a two-year Ontario College Diploma program that

trains students in the pursuit of new opportunities to sustain a competitive and viable enterprise.

Global Business Management is a one-year Ontario Graduate Certificate program that prepares

university and college graduates for a career in the field of business.

Business Management-International Business, a two-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program,

provides graduates with specialized career expertise, technical knowledge and skills in international

business

Event Management and Fundraising is a one-year program designed to prepare graduates for the new

and growing field of event organizing and management.

An agreement between the College and the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA), the first of its kind

between ABSA and an Ontario college, enables the college training and practical time experience of co-

op students and graduates of Lambton College’s Chemical Production & Power Engineering Technology

(CPET) and Power Engineering Technology – Chemical (PETC) programs to be recognized in Alberta,

allowing for seamless transition into the province’s workforce.

The General Machinist apprenticeship program was offered for the first time in 2014-15.

Lambton College celebrated the first graduating class of students to receive their Bachelor of Commerce

or Bachelor of Business Administration degree through the college’s special partnership with Nipissing

University.

An enhanced pathway with the University of Windsor will grant Lambton College students to pursue the

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree following successful completion of the college’s Practical

Nursing program.

Health Care Management and Leadership Development Board of Governors certificate was offered on a

part-time basis in 2014-15.

For 2015-16, Lambton’s nationally recognized Chemical Production & Power Engineering (CPET)

program will be modified to include Industrial Bio-Technology courses to equip students with skills and

knowledge for career opportunities in the growing field of renewable chemicals.

With funding provided through MTCU’s Financial Health & Stability grant, the College developed and

implemented a new Academic Program Prioritization, Revitalization and Rationalization policy which

outlines a model that objectively assesses and prioritizes academic programs on the basis of established

criteria that consider the need and demand for programs, their operational efficiency and effectiveness,

alignment with College priorities, and the quality of the programs.

Lambton College was awarded MTCU Productivity Improvement Fund (PIF) grants in support of the

College’s Mobile Learning strategy. The funds helped to establish a training lab for faculty professional

development regarding the new technology, as well as to fund development of online apps for college

orientation and remedial math courses, along with gamification of six College courses.

The College also received funding to develop six online courses that will be shared with the Ontario

College system.

Together with students, alumni and parents the College celebrated the 10th anniversary of the

Community Integration through Cooperative Education (CICE) program and the tremendous impact this

program has had on the lives of its students.

The Cube, an on-campus entrepreneurial hub which assists students and local citizens to achieve their

goals of becoming entrepreneurs or corporate innovators was launched in partnership with Enactus

Lambton, funded by the Government of Ontario’s On-Campus Entrepreneurship Activities (OCEA)

program.

After celebrating over 40 years of providing quality early learning and child care to the Sarnia-Lambton

community, it was with heavy hearts that the doors of the Lambton College Early Childhood Education

Centre closed in the summer of 2014.

Convocation 2014 honoured the largest graduating class in College history.

Students

Lambton College students continued the tradition of giving back to community, both at home and

abroad.

In partnership with the Lambton Kent District School Board, Lambton’s carpentry apprentice students

constructed sheds to provide homes for animals at the local Kinsmen Children’s Animal Farm.

Second Year PN students traveled to Guatemala to provide nursing care as part of an international

clinical experience.

Students enrolled in Lambton College’s Information Technology (IT) programs participated in a pilot

project funded through the Ontario Centre of Excellence Voucher for E- Business (VEB) program, that

paired students and faculty supervisors with five local businesses to help develop and implement E-

Business plans to increase visibility and market share.

Enactus Lambton College claimed a series of coveted titles at the 2014 Enactus Canada National

Exposition in only the team’s second year. Enactus Lambton claimed first place for the Scotiabank

EcoLiving Green Challenge National Champion, the TD Entrepreneurship Challenge and the Unilever

Sustainable Living Plan Project Partnership for work transforming the rural village of Kasaka, Zambia

through their One Seed project. The team also earned the Walmart Women’s Economic Empowerment

Project Partnership National Champion for Strength in Numbers, a financial education program

delivered at a local women’s shelter.

The Lambton College Student Administrative Council (SAC) had a very busy year. In addition to updating

its Constitution and by-laws, the students actively supported Mental Health initiatives such as Jack.org

and Clara’s Big Ride, as well as getting behind a Goodwill drive. SAC was active in the First Year Student

Experience as well as a number of social justice causes.

Students from a number of Skilled Trades programs again helped to construct a Habitat for Humanity

home for a Sarnia family.

2014-15 continued the Lambton College Firefit Combat Challenge team’s winning tradition with

students and coach earning recognition. At the National competition, student Chris Shanks earned the

title of Canadian Rookie of the Year. In Women's Tandems, Sarah Nabi and Vanessa Maciukewiczs

earned a bronze medal, while the Men's Relay team took the gold medal in the college division. Coach

Ian Van Reenen, a Lambton College alumnus, was named the 2014 Canadian Firefit Combat Challenge

Champion.

A group of Instrumentation & Control Engineering Technology students brought home a number of

awards from the 2015 Instrumentation & Controls ISA competition held at SAIT in Calgary.

The Lambton College Men’s Basketball Team capped the most successful season in College history with

a trip to the 2015 OCAA Men’s Basketball Championships.

Research

Lambton College continues to “punch above its weight” in terms of applied research. The College

ranked seventh in funding among Ontario Colleges, quite an achievement for a small college. A number

of new research initiatives kicked off in 2014-15.

The Fire & Public Safety Centre of Excellence commenced a research project to test the effectiveness of

a partner company’s novel ozone technology on professional firefighting gear, with funding through the

Ontario Centre of Excellence and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Lambton College received funding from the Applied Research Tools & Instruments program, to purchase

infrastructure for four R&D initiatives, ranking the college third in the country in terms of total funding

for this program. The projects funded include: development of a Water Analysis Laboratory,

Development, Characterization and Optimization of Nano-Engineered Materials for Green Energy

Conversion and Storage, Additive Manufacturing and 3D Digitizing Technologies for the Bluewater

Technology Access Centre (BTAC), as well as funding for a Distributed Monitoring and Control System.

In support of significant regional effort to diversify the local economy, Lambton College submitted a

$2.3M proposal to NSERC-IE for development of a Bio-Industrial Process Research Centre. This Centre

would support establishment of a unique "Biohybrid and Chemistry Cluster" in the region, to take

sustainable feedstock, such as agricultural products and wastes and turn these renewable resources into

value-added chemicals and energy.

Funding was received to support an OCE-VIP project in collaboration with an IT company, for

development of an Android-based solution to control a remote energy management system that can

detect unused devices, identify energy waste and notify the user. Another project supported by OCE-

VIP funding was to develop an Innovative Accelerated Corrosion Technique for Industrial Protective

Coatings Based on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy in partnership with a local machine shop.

Lambton College joined forces with Sarnia Lambton Economic Partnership to present the Sarnia-

Lambton Water Symposium, featuring a presentations from agencies involved in the development of the

Ontario water sector as well as Sarnia-Lambton based organizations. Technical presentations showcased

the community’s capacity in the water and wastewater area, and the College’s expanding research

capabilities pertaining to water-related projects and technologies. Established by Lambton College in

2013, the Lambton Water Centre is funded by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of

Canada’s Five Year Innovation Enhancement Grant.

Quality Lambton’s Quality Assurance process, now in its sixth year, requires comprehensive, third-party reviews

of every post-secondary program every six years. Since initiation of the QA program, fifty reviews have

been completed, with only programs recently in operation yet to be reviewed. Internationally delivered

programs were brought into the QA process over the past year. Partner sites at locations domestic or

international at which Lambton programs are delivered are now effectively incorporated into the

Lambton College QA process.

The Practical Nursing and Chemical Production and Power Engineering Technology programs were the

first to undergo a second comprehensive program review during 2014-15. Over the past year, five

program reviews, covering six programs, completed the recommendation implementation stage of the

review process.

Program Quality Assurance Process Audit (PQAPA) requirements now extend to all College credentials,

including part-time studies and Board of Governors certificate programs, and significant progress toward

achievement of expectations was made.

Preparation for the PQAPA move to accreditation was a key focus of work throughout 2014-15.

Lambton College volunteered to pilot the new accreditation process and standards and be assessed

against same in the last PQAPA audit. Work on Lambton’s response to the evolving audit process,

expectations and standards, and development of a self-study report continued throughout 2014-15 in

preparation for an April 2015 audit.

Facilities

Dedicated space created to house “The Cube”, a hub to encourage student and regional

entrepreneurialism was officially opened by The Honourable Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and

Innovation and Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities in January 2014.

A new corporate training facility was created for the Learning and Training Solutions department in

space formerly occupied by the Early Childhood Education Centre.

Accessibility upgrades were implemented across numerous campus buildings.

IT network upgrades continued, ensuring students’ on-campus and remote access to curriculum as part

of the College’s Class+ Experience.

Detailed functional plans for the Centre for Health Education and Sustainable Care and the

Recreation/Fitness Complex were compiled, with input from students, faculty and the community. The

new Health facility is intended to house all health-related programming, enabling sharing of resources

and providing Work will commence on the project to construct these important new campus buildings

immediately following announcement of funding applied for through the Build Canada – Small

Communities Fund.

The Lambton College Foundation

“Envision tomorrow” was chosen by the Board of Directors of The Lambton College Foundation as the

theme of the largest fundraising campaign in the College’s history.

During 2014-15, the College initiated a major $45M campus renewal program, aimed at revitalizing the

College’s infrastructure and academic equipment.

Envision Tomorrow encompasses construction of two major new buildings as well as a program to

maintain the currency of equipment used in Technology and Health post-secondary programs.

A grant application in the amount of $20M was submitted in late 2014 to the Federal and Provincial

Build Canada-Small Communities Fund for construction of the Centre for Health Education and

Sustainable Care. In March 2015, the County of Lambton demonstrated its recognition of the

importance of the College to the economic health of the County by supporting a gift to the College in the

amount of $5M over 6 years.

The Lambton College Students Administrative Council renewed their support of a planned Recreation

and Fitness Centre, which will house varsity and intramural sport as well as a new student fitness centre.

By year end, planning for a major fundraising initiative was underway, with strong volunteer support

and a planned 2015 official kick-off.

The Foundation and Alumni Association held a number of public initiatives in support of financial

assistance for students and college projects.

The popular Corks, Caps and Cuisine celebrated its tenth anniversary. A very successful Distinguished

Awards Gala recognized a number of individuals for personal achievement and contribution to Lambton

College including: Norma Cox; Lakeside Process Controls Ltd.; Gerry Eede; Dr. Maike Luiken; and Allison

Vickerd.

The College is grateful to the dedicated members of The Lambton College Foundation for over twenty

years of support for students.

Financial Results

For the year ended March 31, 2015 Lambton College recorded a surplus of $1,839,843. Continued

strong enrolment, expanding international student activity, and focus on control of costs contributed to
