Sacred Songs of Serbia

Musicologist and conductor Bogdan Djaković makes his US début with Cappella Romana leading a program of beautiful works from the Serbian Orthodox

tradition. Dr. Djaković makes his home in Serbia’s historically turbulent northern region, which for generations has been subject to competing cultural influences. He has devoted his career to exploring the meeting of East and West in Serbian

choral music. His program presents traditional Eastern Orthodox sources filtered through Western European musical colors and techniques, creating works of

resplendent beauty.

of Byzantium—with majestic ceremonies for the cathedral of Hagia Sophia,

triumphant assertions of superiority by Westerners, and fervent prayers for the

healing of political and religious divisions.

Good Friday in Medieval Jerusalem

Cappella Romana releases its 21st recording with these performances of music for Good Friday in Medieval Jerusalem. Hear Medieval Byzantine chant,

the fraternal repertoire to Latin chant in the West, composed for 8th- and 9th-century celebrations of Holy Week in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Hymns by

Jerusalem’s great church fathers—Patriarch Sophronios, Kosmas the Melodist, and

Saint John Damascene—include the famous Orthodox hymn “Semeron krematai”

(“Today He who is hung upon the tree”) sung to its original medieval melody.

On the program

Echoes of the Renaissance

Dr. Tikey Zes (b. 1927) is the most prolific composer of Greek Orthodox liturgical music in America. Long a proponent of Zes’s music, Cappella

Romana will perform excerpts of a setting of his Divine Liturgy which Cappella

Romana released on CD last season. Preceding the Zes are selections of the Missa

MiMi by Johannes Ockeghem, who with other masters of the Renaissance inspired

Zes’s approach to modal harmony and counterpoint. Zes recorded the Ockeghem

Missa MiMi on LP with his Berkeley Chamber Singers in the 1960s, at the dawn of the modern Early Music movement.

Co-presented by Cappella Romana, Friends of Chamber

Music, and Portland Baroque Orchestra

Jordi Savall is an exceptional figure in today’s music world. One of the most multifariously

gifted musicians of his generation and a revered

viola da gamba player, he is one of the principal

architects of the current revaluation of

historical music. This program explores

the continuation of music of the

Byzantines in the Ottoman

court by Armenian, Greek,

and Sephardic musicians.

Handel’s Messiah

Portland Baroque Orchestra and Cappella Romana

PBO and Cappella Romana join forces again for their annual holiday performances

of Handel’s masterpiece oratorio, directed by renowned British conductor and

scholar John Butt.

From Darkness to Light

Alfred Schnittke’s Verses of Repentance (Stikhi Pokayanniye) is a musical tour-de- force, surpassing in virtuosity Schnittke’s more widely known Concerto for Choir.

Rich harmonies and exuberant melodies deliver these poignant words with tender to

fervent emotion, as the music gives way to an ineffable, final movement sung without words. Cappella Romana favorite Ivan Moody will conduct, completing this intense

program with Diptych by Galina Grigorjeva and his own work Anástasis on Eastertide

texts in Greek and English.
