OUR MISSION

Ho‘ōla Nā Pua is committed to meeting the unique needs of

underage female sex trafficking victims through the utilization

of individualized, comprehensive, and restorative therapies.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to provide girls who are rescued or have escaped

from the abuse of sex trafficking with a home, a path to

restoration and healing from their trauma, an increased sense

of self-worth, and the confidence and ability to successfully

reintegrate into their family and the community.

WHO WE ARE

Ho‘ōla Nā Pua is a Hawai‘i-based, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization

whose mission is to provide underage female victims of sex

trafficking with a pu‘uhonua (a safe place) where they can begin

to heal from their physical, spiritual, and emotional abuse.

Our volunteers work tirelessly, networking and collaborating

with government officials, health care professionals, and

representatives of the justice system, social service agencies,

faith-based communities, state regulatory agencies licensing

institutions, and foundations, and other community members

in Hawai‘i who share our mission to improve the lives of

these underage victims. We are an active member of the

Hawai‘i Coalition Against Human Trafficking Task Force.

OUR APPROACH

Ho‘ōla Nā Pua’s fourfold approach to addressing sex trafficking

includes:

• Refuge and Renewal – providing a long-term licensed

residential facility for underage sexually exploited females

• Education and Awareness – promoting community awareness

about the issue

• Decreasing Demand – supporting legislation that protects our

keiki

• Limiting Supply – conducting school awareness, prevention

and outreach programs

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Thank you for being a part of the Ho‘ōla Nā Pua team that is bringing light into dark places and

watching new life come forth. Your support inspires us to remain steadfast to our mission and vision.

I want to share with you the story that will forever be etched in my heart and motivates me to press

forward everyday in this massive restoration effort for underage girls who have been exploited.

At 14 years old, a young girl was identified as a sex trafficking victim after just one weekend out on the street. During those 48 hours missing, this child was lured, recruited, and exploited. While we celebrated the physical “recovery” of this child, the true recovery process had not even begun. The reality that this child was not the same as the one who left home 48 hours prior, became apparent. Traumatized, confused, and angry, her life would never be the same. Her innocence had been stolen. Dreams of the future and achievements she hoped for were shattered. Upon identification, the services and interventions needed were disjointed and chaotic. She was spiraling and a net was not in place to catch her. Shortly after treatment, she returned to the streets. She entered the all too common cycle of running and being locked up. Over a three year span, I visited this child in detention homes and the corrections facility. The system had nothing to offer her besides imprisonment, but her victimization and traumatization didn’t stop just because she was removed from the streets. She required a very specific intervention beyond what was available. It was in these moments that I grew determined to change that.

This child is now a young woman, and she is still struggling within a life of exploitation. Her situation would likely look much different now if she had received the proper intervention at 14. She needed more then, and new girls every day need more now. She is only one of thousands of girls who need hope, healing, truly believe that sad and desperate stories like this one can have beautiful outcomes.

Innocence can be restored and healing can take place. We are committed to this!

CONTINUED FORWARD MOVEMENT

2015 marks a year of great accomplishments and milestones for Ho‘ōla Nā Pua. We are planning

for even greater things in 2016. Ho‘ōla Nā Pua is committed to having a positive impact against the

sexual exploitation of children and developing a sanctuary of hope, healing, and renewal for children

who have been trafficked. The heart of our work is the abused and traumatized girl who needs to

know she has value and a purpose. Because of the level of awareness and training of Ho‘ōla Nā Pua

volunteers, girls are being identified daily as victims of this crime. While we celebrate victims being

found and rescued, the reality that a long term rehabilitation home that comprehensively and

holistically meets their unique needs cannot be underestimated. Our facility has been named Pearl

Haven and will provide these young girls with a safe place, a sanctuary where they can shine and

find new life.

PEARL HAVEN SITE DEVELOPMENT

Plans for our new facility have cleared numerous hurdles: including the approval of the Certificate

of Need by the State Hospital Planning Board, approval of the Environmental Assessment by

the State Department of Land & Natural Resources and the securing of the lease for the home.

Thanks to a grant from the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, the site survey, permitting, and perimeter

fencing were installed with irrigation, perimeter landscaping,

and security systems to follow in 2016. In order to complete

the engineering and apply for building permits in 2016, our

amazing team of volunteer architects (Dennis Furukawa, Anna

Grune, Jamie Emberson, and the Chaminade School of Interior

Design) created the design for the Pearl Haven renovations.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION

School Prevention Outreach Program: has expanded and we have reached over 6,000 students in local schools about

the danger of sex trafficking and the Department of Education is

now considering a module to address this problem.

P.E.A.R.L.S. Program: Over the past year we have worked to

finalize our special treatment facility program and prepare the program for licensure under the

Department of Health. Our program was developed by Dr. Shantae Williams and Dr. George

Rhoades along with our Ho‘ōla Nā Pua leadership and is called P.E.A.R.L.S (Providing Evidenced

Based Assessment and Intervention for Adolescents Recovering from a Life of Sexual Exploitation).

Starfish Mentoring Program Development: For the past few years, we have been working on an

informal basis to help adolescents who have been identified as trafficked victims (to date we have

worked with approximately 12 girls). We are now proud to announce that our Starfish Mentorship

Program is ready for implementation. The formalized program has been under development with

our professional multi-disciplinary program development team for the past several months. This new

structured health centric-trauma informed mentorship program allows us to provide survivors with

one-on-one support from a trained mentor. The program includes a menu of opportunities such as

recreational experiences and referrals to individual and group therapies, specializing in therapeutic

modalities for these victims. We have received some initial grant funding to help us formally launch

this program and are currently screening and interviewing potential mentors. 2016 will be a year

of great transition for the Ho‘ōla Nā Pua team as we strategically continue to move from vision to

reality. Thanks to generous donor support, we have hired our first group of paid staff to assist with

volunteer and fundraising coordination, allowing us to enhance community outreach and train

hundreds of volunteers.

We anticipate wonderful and exciting things in 2016.

Thank you for having the courage to take a stand against this injustice in our community

and being a part of the solution, Our success and forward movement would not be

possible without our donors and volunteers. We need your strong support in order for us to

provide a home for these precious lives.
