OUR COMMUNITY CENTER

Thank you for your interest in joining us at the Manhattan Youth Downtown Community Center. Our goal is to provide physically engaging, culturally stimulating, community-building, and thought-provoking activities in a comfortable and nurturing setting. We love growing up with children and families and seeing first steps, first swims, first days of school, first graduations, and many more firsts, seconds, and thirds. Whether you come here as a child, adult or senior, we hope you will use and enjoy all that the Center has to offer, and thank you for helping us make this a happy place.

Alex RocheDowntown Community Center Director

WE CARE

This year, Manhattan Youth After-School Programs will care for 2,500 children in 15 Manhattan public schools every school day from dismissal until 6 PM. Our middle-school kids will enjoy free, high-quality activities this year thanks to $2.6 million in funding, and many of our younger kids will attend our fee-based elementary-school programs thanks to more than $300,000 in tuition assistance that Manhattan Youth provides to families with demonstrated financial need. We care for all of our families by keeping rates low - five days per week in our elementary grades cost only about $6 per hour. We care about quality, too; we provide kids with over 400 exciting, engaging activities across all of our schools each week.

We care during the summer, too. We will provide about $100,000 in tuition assistance for our summertime Downtown Day Camps, and nearly $25,000 in assistance for our other fee-based recreation programs. We also care for our seniors with Senior Excercise 5 days per week, for our teens and tweens with an expanding menu of programs, and our entire community with even more free programs – all of which costs us about $300,000. At Manhattan Youth we care – with more than $3 million in financial assistance and free programs this year.

AQUATICS

Our Manhattan Youth Downtown Community Center offers aquatics programs for all ages and abilities. Our full 25-yard, 4-lane pool is kept at a warm 86-88 degrees, creating an inviting environment for our swimming lessons and Family Swim.

Bubble Babies6 mo. - 2 yr. with parent/guardian

This drop-in class helps new swimmers become comfortable in and around the water. Songs and games introduce beginner swim skills (such as kicking, splashing, and blowing bubbles) and create a fun, positive experience for young children in the pool. Bubble Babies classes are drop-in and included in membership to the Center.

Begin2Swim18 - 36 mo. with parent/guardian

These beginner swim lessons offer more personal instruction and a progressive curriculum for children who are ready to take the plunge! Along with increased comfort in the water, children learn safety skills, breath control, proper body position, and basic arm and leg movements. Through a more structured class setting, swimmers begin to independently follow the lead of the instructor. After completion of the Begin2Swim program, swimmers may be ready to move up to the first level of our Pre-K Swim Lessons.

Pre K/Youth Swim Lessons3 - 5 yr./K - 5th grade

Our small-group lessons promote safety, fun, and friendship. We love incorporating a social aspect into swimming, an activity that is often thought of as an individual sport. The result is an environment where children encourage, support, and learn from one another - and simply have a blast swimming!

Middle and High School Programs6th grade and up

Our Middle and High School swim programs are geared specifically towards our adolescent swimmers. Whether new to swimming or an accomplished team swimmer, we offer a class or program for everyone!

After-School Swim LessonsK - 8th grade

Additionally, we are proud to offer our Youth Swim Lessons through our After-School programs at our various elementary and middle school programs. Please visit www.manhattanyouth.org for more information.

SWIM LESSONS AT THE CENTER:

At the Manhattan Youth Swim School our goal is for your child to have a positive, successful swimming experience. Our certified teachers come from a variety of backgrounds and have years of experience teaching swimming - each of them contributing to our program in their own special way. We follow a curriculum developed over Manhattan Youth's 20+ years of successfully teaching children to swim in Lower Manhattan, however we pride ourselves on having unique instructors, each with different personalities, teaching styles, and creative ideas. We understand that children learn in different ways and respond to different styles of instruction, and our diverse team of instructors allows us to find that perfect fit for each child.

Preschool PrepEarly childhood programs provide your child with educational stimulation in a safe environment. This class focuses on lessening separation anxiety, friendship-building, socializing, and the routine of a classroom. Now available 5 days a week. Registration required.

Songs for SeedsNamed "Best Music Class 2010” by New York Magazine, Songs For Seeds is a rockin' music program that encourages children, newborn to 5 years, to sing, dance and play along with a live, three-piece band. Kids rock out with children's instruments, as well as real drums, guitars, keyboards and instruments from around the world. Using original tunes written by well-known musician Mr. Ray, Songs For Seeds provides a fun, stimulating, interactive experience. We "travel" to a new country every week, create well-known nursery rhymes through visual art, perform magic tricks to highlight numbers and counting, and spin the animal wheel to reinforce animal names and sounds. By mixing our original kids rock 'n' roll songs with adult contemporary music, the band is sure to please little ones and their adults. To register, email [email protected].

YOUNG FAMILIES

Music Theory for TotsOur Suzuki-based Early Childhood Music Program is designed to introduce children to the fundamentals of classical music: rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, dynamics and articulation. In class, children explore instruments, play rhythmic games and learn to move to music. They also play finger strengthening, physical coordination and fine motor development games in preparation for further instrumental study. In the Suzuki approach to musical instruction, parental involvement is crucial to the musical development of the child. Therefore, we encourage parents and caregivers to participate and enjoy this exciting class along with their child. Registration required.

Make A Mess SeriesLed by our experienced head art teacher, this series of classes gives your child the opportunity to grow within their class for an accelerated learning environment. Each class focuses on one specific area of creative learning: Cooking, Painting, Science, or Crafts. Your child will acquire new skills and knowledge all while having fun! These classes require registration and are open only to members. See page 8 for class descriptions.

Kids will use their imaginations with colors and designs through this fun and inspiring art form.

Fiber Arts I & IILearn the basics of sewing in Fiber Arts I by designing and constructing hand-sewn items such as pillows, scarves, bags and stuffed animals. DANCE

BalletOur ballet program introduces students to basic ballet vocabulary while developing strength, proper alignment, musicality, and the grace that is inherent to the form. Dancers from our ballet classes are prominently featured in each semester’s dance performance.

Creative DanceThis blend of movement, music, improvisation, and basic dance steps is an introduction for the future study of dance techniques. Kindergarten and 1st grade students learn fundamentals while developing their imaginations.

Hip HopA high-energy, intense class for dancers of all experience levels. The dance studio will be hopping to today’s pop stars as students learn individual and teamwork skills that evolve into polished dance numbers.

Contemporary DanceThis challenging class explores a range of styles from around the world, ranging from contemporary to classical, street dance to ballroom, jazz funk to Broadway. Students will learn dance combinations while improving individual and group skills. The class culminates with participation in two fully-staged dance performances by Manhattan Youth’s entire dance ensemble.

PERFORMING ARTS

Glee Club Classes introduce and develop rhythm, music theory, ear-training and basic harmony from a variety of popular and classical music. In later grades, students will draw from classic rock and pop tunes as they develop their skills. The Glee Club will perform for peers during the program, and publicly at the end of each semester.

Musical TheaterLet Broadway performers introduce your child to musical theater! Each week, your child will get to take part in acting games that help develop their imagination, creativity, articulation, and performance skills. Students will work as a cast throughout the semester on musical production numbers. At the end of the semester, the class will perform onstage in front of hundreds of people!

On Camera Acting This class introduces students to appropriate scenes for film and TV designed to help actors make the change from performing on stage to acting within a camera frame. Students will learn to give intimate performances required for on-camera work. Each week, the actors get to see their own work played back and critiqued.

Cirque du TribequeStudents learn fun circus skills from Cirque du Soleil performers and gymnasts. Second & third grade students begin with acrobatics, clowning, juggling, object manipulation, and stilt-walking. Fourth & fifth grade students build on earlier skills with more advanced tricks, adding aerial work to their repertoires. After learning a wide variety of skills, each student will specialize in one or two areas, culminating in a full-costume, semester-end, circus spectacular!
