Dear Brother Alumnus,

As The Class of 1965 prepares to celebrate the golden anniversary of the first Farrell graduation, the current Men of Farrell are living up to and indeed exceeding the expectations of those early years. Our recent Open House was an opportunity to show what it means to be a Vir Fidelis, and as always our students did a tremendous job of exemplifying the Farrell tradition.

Please view the video of four of your younger brothers explaining what Msgr. Farrell High School means to them. One word is repeated over and again: brotherhood. The unique Farrell brotherhood we share is still the bedrock of the Farrell experience, and that which is most appreciated by our present students. It is this Farrell brotherhood that challenges us to be our best academically, in service to others, in our activities and athletics, and as upstanding young men in our community. I am certain that what you will hear them say will sound very familiar. We know that Farrell has made us the successful men we are today. Our current students appreciate that their Farrell education is the key to their similar success in the future. The video may be viewed on the alumni website www.monsignorfarrellalumni.org/annual15

Yet, much has changed. I do not need to tell you that the economic realities of today are not what they were when we were students. The basic costs of operating an excellent academic institution have skyrocketed in recent years. Thankfully, Cardinal Dolan has invested 6.2 million dollars in long-overdue repairs to our facility, which now boasts new roofs, new windows and masonry in the classrooms – and no longer leaks every time it rains! This investment by Cardinal Dolan is concrete proof of his high regard for Farrell and his commitment to what we give our students.

We need your help. Over and again I hear that families cannot afford our tuition – and tuition does not cover the full cost of our operating expenses.

• We need to provide financial assistance to our younger brothers who will not be able to receive a Farrell education due to financial concerns. You may choose to direct your annual gift to scholarship assistance for a student in need. I can assure you that I investigate each request thoroughly and ascertain if there is genuine hardship. We do not have much financial aid available, and I have had to turn away too many families already.

• While the exterior repairs have been provided by the Archdiocese, the school is responsible for interior upkeep and improvements. Most of the desks in the school are the original desks from 1962 – and believe me they look it! Would you consider the gift of a desk which can be memorialized for a donation of $250? (See back of page for honoree/memorial designation.)

• Unrestricted gifts enable us to direct assistance to areas that all too often are overlooked or deferred due to lack of funding. Again, I assure you that I carefully monitor every penny we spend so that our resources are utilized wisely and well.

Again, thank you for taking the time to hear our younger brothers tell you what Farrell means to all of us. And as someone who considers it a blessing to be with our younger brothers each day – thank you for helping us to give them what we received. I assure you they are grateful.

As always, you and your loved ones remain in our prayers each morning at Mass in our Chapel and during prayers in homeroom as we thank God for your goodness to our Farrell brothers.

Vir Fidelis

Gratefully,

(Rev. Msgr.) Edmund J. Whalen, ’76 Principal
