Oak Ridge Trojan Lacrosse

Introduction

The primary purpose of this handbook is to introduce Oak Ridge students and parents to the women's lacrosse program. A major aspect of this handbook explains the rules, guidelines, and expectations set forth by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), Oak Ridge High School's Athletic Department, and the Trojan women's lacrosse coaching staff. It is the responsibility of each interested women's lacrosse player and their parent/s to read and understand the contents of the handbook, so you know what is expected of you and what you are challenging yourself to be a part of. For further clarification of any of the handbook's contents, please discuss the matter with the coaching staff as soon as possible and definitely before tryouts.

Vision Statement To develop disciplined student/athletes of character who strive for educational and athletic excellence.

Coaching Objectives 1. Develop student athletes who are committed to personal excellence and team success on and off the field. 2. Provide an inspirational and motivational environment where preparation, practice, and hard work generate legitimate opportunities for success. 3. Emphasize the importance and development of fundamentals and techniques necessary for positive experiences in lacrosse and in life.

Core Values Respect: Respect yourself, teammates, coaches, opponents, officials, equipment, facilities, your school, your community, and the game. Commitment: Demonstrate a TEAM mentality through attendance, participation, preparation, and healthy living in both academics and lacrosse. Teamwork: Teamwork divides the work and increases success. It is the fuel that enables common people to attain uncommon results! Teamwork breeds support, compassion, and caring that inspires and helps overcome pressures, hardships, or fatigue. It is a reward, a challenge, and a privilege to be a contributing member of our TEAM! With selflessness, respect, commitment, and a no-excuse attitude, you will find success, enjoyment, and pride in being a Trojan.

3. Absolutely NO hazing of any one or group of players.

4. Maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (G.P.A.), but aim for higher. 5. ASK QUESTIONS! And, LISTEN to responses.

6. Coaches open door policy: We are here for you, talk to us when needed.

7. Trust coaches to make decisions that are appropriate and fair for the team.

PLAYING TIME/STARTING POSITIONS

Please note that it is our desire to play as many players as possible. Consequently, we feel it is important you understand how we will decide starters and playing time. 1. Lacrosse ability • Consistency of Execution: The ability to CONSISTENTLY execute skills,

tasks, and assignments throughout practice and games as you have been coached. Even if skills and tasks are up to par, not following through with assignments will adversely effect playing time.

• Toughness: Lacrosse is a contact sport and it must be played with mental and physical toughness.

• Hustle, Effort, Tenacity: 100% at all times. "Play as if it is the last game every time."

2. Contribution to the Overall Team: Lacrosse is a true TEAM sport. If you are not helping the team you are hurting the team. This goes for both on and off the field. 3. Attendance: General Expectations: Attendance will be a significant part of your role on both JV and Varsity. Failure to attend practice can and in most cases will affect the experiences of the team. We expect 100% attendance, however there will be conflicts and emergencies that may arise, therefore communicate with coaches when unable to attend. Excused absences: Any player who is absent from school or leaves school early due to illness will be excused from practice and there will be no formal penalty for such absences. However missing repeated practices due to illness or other reasons can lead to an inability to be prepared for the games and could result in decreased playing time. Tardiness: All players should be ready to start practice at the specified time. That means cleats, eye guards, mouthpieces, attire, and stick with a ball in hand when practice starts. Repeated tardiness will negatively affect playing time. Injuries: If you are injured/hurt, you must notify your coach as soon as possible, preferably before practice or games. You are expected to attend all practices, even if injured/hurt, unless you receive permission from your coach via email or text to be absent, tardy or leave early. When you are hurt, you are expected to take care of injuries responsibly and keep coaches informed on your status. Attendance Violations: Repetitive missed practices will result in progressive disciplinary action

PARENT/COACH RELATIONSHIP

Both parenting and coaching are extremely difficult vocations. By establishing an understanding of each position, we are better able to accept the actions of the other and provide greater benefit to the children. As parents, when your child becomes involved in the Oak Ridge Athletics and the lacrosse program, you have the right to understand what expectations are placed on your child with clear communication from the coach. Communication you should expect from the coach: Philosophy, player expectations, team requirements (fundraising, special events, off season suggestions, etc.), procedures should your child be injured during participation, discipline that results in the denial of your child’s participation, etc. Appropriate concerns to discuss with coaches:

• The treatment of your child mentally and physically • Ways to help your child improve • Concerns about your child’s behavior

Coaches are professionals. They make judgment decisions based on what they believe to be the best for all students. Certain things, including the items listed above, can and should be discussed with your coach. Other things should be left to the discretion of the coach. Issues not appropriate to discuss with the coach:

• Playing Time • Player positions • Team strategy • Other student-athletes

There are often situations that may require a conference between the coach and the parent. The player will be invited and involved in these meetings. To resolve the problem, we must have everyone’s help and involvement. If there is a concern: Have your son or daughter talk to the coach one on one (this is part of growing up). If this doesn’t resolve the issue, the parents should call to set up an appointment with the coach. If the coach cannot be reached, call the athletic Director, Steve White at (916) 933-6980 ext. 3044. *Please do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a game. These can be emotional times for both the parent and the coach. Meetings of this nature usually do not promote resolution. If the meeting with the coach did not provide a satisfactory resolution: Call and set up an appointment with the Athletic Director to discuss the situation. At this meeting, the appropriate next step can be determined.

Athletes Nutritional Expectations

Be prepared, fueled and hydrated before all practices and games. The things we put in our bodies are the fuel that drives us and if that fuel is of nutritional value and contributes to a healthy mind, body, and soul, only then can you demand the most out of your body, while reducing injury, lack of concentration, and fatigue concerns.

TROJAN PRIDE It is a privilege to be a member of this lacrosse team and to be an Oak Ridge Trojan. The time, effort, and energy we all spend in making our program a success is based on a strong conviction that lacrosse and an education will provide some of your greatest values and most rewarding moments. Take pride in everything you do as part of our program, for in lacrosse as in life, the success you enjoy will result from the effort you are willing to give to be the best you can be. Oak Ridge High School Lacrosse is committed to PRIDE and EXCELLENCE. Remember what you represent as an Oak Ridge Trojan every time you step on the field or wear the Trojan uniform. Remember you are setting the example for those who will follow in your footsteps. You are an Oak Ridge Trojan always and forever.
