Attending an Ithaca College Theatre production is like getting in on the
ground floor of a great investment. You’re seeing shows of professional
quality that are designed, built, and performed by students at the very
beginning of their journey as theatre artists. The 2013–14 season is
another kind of journey for the audience—one of discovery, truth-telling,
fervent beliefs, and the captive imagination. The shows we’ve chosen this
year are intended to challenge all of us to think about what we say, how
we conduct ourselves, and what to do when we lose our way. These are
powerful stories based on incidents of fact and fiction, and the blurred
line between the two. We’ve book-ended the season with plays by writers
who were inspired (or horrified, rather) by the behavior of our fellow
human beings, and we've peppered the months in between with
compelling stories and glorious music, full of wit and passion.
As teachers, we are constantly managing the push-and-pull between
process and product. Our students are learning right in front of your eyes,
as these productions provide the laboratory for practicing their craft—
whether it’s as managers producing the shows, designers and technicians
telling the visual and physical story through sets, costumes, lights, and
sound, or actors seeking truth in performance. Our faculty and staff
lead the journey for a little while in classes, rehearsals, and production
meetings, but now you witness the product; a new part of the process
begins: how do you maintain its integrity and adapt to audience response
in the moment? All of those lessons are being taught during the week
of the performance, and they require your involvement.
Ithaca College has a century-old legacy of fostering talented young
people—our alums grace the stages and shops of Broadway, regional
theatres, film, and television. But it begins here when you, the audience,
settle in, turn off your smart phones (please!), and let the words of Anna
Deavere Smith, the magic of Stephen Sondheim, the wit of David Ives,
the charm of Chabrier, the collaborative spirit of the Civilians, and the
power of Arthur Miller affect you. The audience gives the theatre a
present and our students a purpose, and Ithaca College ensures that
theatre has a future.
Thank you for being a part of it. We couldn’t do this without you.

The Salem witch trials of the 17th century cost many people their lives
when girls in the town accused others of witchcraft. It is our belief that
the girls were pretending. They manipulated every and any spectator
they could get on their side. The girls contrived the events to get what
they wanted. Witchcraft is an “ipso facto crime” whereby people of the
court only trusted the word of the “victim.” The girls gained their power
from this and abused it. They were able to point a finger and end a
person’s life just for the thrill of it. Hangings were a form of entertainment
and, for these girls whom before this were stuck at home cleaning, it was
very exhilarating.
The life of a Puritan was based on a love of God and a fear of Satan.
Each person’s motivation was defined by this fact and it is my belief
that each action was rooted in fear. Fear of authority caused finger
pointing and name-calling. Fear of giving in caused more hangings.
Fear of losing a sense of self or even one’s life caused a stalwart of
confessions. Many people questioned their faith, and it is invigorating
to see those shifts in the characters. It takes longer for some than others.
It is our hope that audience members will be engaged by the lives of
these Puritans who actually existed in history and went through these
events whereby innocent people were hung just because they had an
enemy in the town for any given reason. In a way, it was a discrimination
that went too far.

“Words! Mere words! How terrible they were! How clear, and vivid, and
cruel! One could not escape from them. And yet what a subtle magic
there was in them! Mere words! Was there anything so real as words?”
The title character of Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian
Gray captures a universal sentiment on the impact of words. Some 62
years later, Arthur Miller would publish a play based on true accounts
of the hysteria that spun out of one word used by a group of catty
preteen girls. The word was “witch.” The play was The Crucible.
The accusers were bored young women struggling to find purpose
in the oppressive Puritan society they lived in. The accused were the
scapegoats of that society. Outcasts included anyone in the lower
socioeconomic classes, those who did not own land, or those who
exhibited “strange” behavior. The “afflicted” girls attempted to destroy
the lives of anyone they disliked by capitalizing on the town’s political
and religious tension.
“Witchcraft” was a notion that was believed by the majority to be a
severe threat to the community. Innocent townspeople lost their lives
because the local government, like that of other surrounding colonies,
believed in “spectral evidence.”
Allegations of spectral evidence, in that a person who made covenant
with the devil could take on the form of another in order to recruit others,
turned neighbors against each other. In contrast, some were accused of
engaging in “nonspectral acts of malefic witchcraft” and were able to
obtain power through general acts associated with witchcraft (spells,
curses, potions, puppets, etc.). The only way to avoid hanging was to
confess to practicing witchcraft. In essence, it was not solid, visual
evidence, but the believed intent and thoughts of the accused that was
the ground on which lawmakers based their decisions.
In researching this moment in our history, it has become overwhelmingly
clear that “witchcraft” was an incredibly complex issue that created an
excuse for many to craft a perfect storm on the town of Salem in 1692.
There is no one clear definition nor one absolute cause that can be
attributed to the anarchy that ensued in this community. The factors are
universal: class struggles, gender inequality, power quests, religious
redemption, revenge cravings, and oppression.
Since then, the notion of “witchcraft” has truly grown to be a symbol
for any issue, any word, that evokes panic and sets neighbors against
neighbors. The absurdity and length to which a single word—witch,
communist, AIDS, queer, terrorist—can bring about such destructive
connotations and powerful shifts in society is astonishing. A simple
accusation made by someone in authority (gender, class, race, etc.)
can have magical influence in creating a new reality for the accused.
There will always be an “other” that will be ostracized by society because
it is widely accepted that said “other” is disruptive to the balance of the
community. Society’s interpretation and comprehension of a specific
word associated with the “other” can be shaped through various
mediums. The medium chosen here, which you are about to witness,
is theatre. This is The Crucible, and this is what you make of it.

attributed to the anarchy that ensued in this community.

“Words!
