The Artwork of Taiwo Duvall featured at the 40th InternationalAfrican Arts Festival

The 40th International African Arts Festival isundoubtedly a Brooklyn institution with globalappeal and illustrates this jubilant milestone

through artist Taiwo Duvall's mural labeled Slammin'.The mural features a percussion combo, four leapingladies and a gleeful, seated baby with upraised arms.

"The four ladies are dressed in primary colorsbecause they are simple and pure, just as we [African]are primary people," explains Duvall. "Red for theblood, blue for the sky, green for the earth and goldfor the wealth." The seated baby imitates what hesees the dancers doing.

Duvall painted the 8' x 5' mural in tribute to theBlack Arts Movement of the 1950s. In those days, hepainted and played drums. He fondly recalls his asso-ciation with master drummer Babatunde Olatunji.Presently, he is a 78-year-old elder residing in Ocala,Fl. "Forty years ago, I think I was one of the firstartists participating in the festival," reflects Duvall."The festival continues to flourish which is quite anachievement." Though absent from the park grounds,Taiwo Duvall's spirit pervades the festivities.
