Welcome! After nearly a year of planning and preparation, we are thrilled to welcome you to the 7th Annual AACU State Society Network Advocacy Conference. The informative agenda addresses urology advocacy, legislative updates and current socioeconomic issues sure to benefit your practice. The sessions will not only provide information, but also serve as tools to use when you return home. We hope you will share and leverage the knowledge and resources obtained at this conference with colleagues concerned about the changes happening in health care and the socioeconomic issues they are facing. We are honored to have you here and thank the AACU’s Corporate Members and healthcare industry supporters for their assistance. Speakers and panel participants similarly deserve our recognition and appreciation. For every presentation, we all know that hours of preparation are necessary. Tear Down This Wall: Engaging the Urologic Community to Minimize Intrusions on the Doctor-Patient Relationships Friday, September 19, 2014 4:45 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Liz Helms (Sacramento, CA) President/CEO, California Chronic Care Coalition Liz Helms has over a decade of experience in the public relations field including, coalition building, grassroots advocacy, strategic planning and policy development. Her vision and breathe of issues has made her a leader in the health care arena and a recognized advocate in California, nationally as well as internationally. Liz currently is the President/CEO of the California Chronic Care Coalition, an alliance of non-profit, social consumer and provider organizations united to improve the health of Californians with chronic conditions or diseases. Liz was one of the co-founders the San Diego University of Best Practices where she Coordinated and worked with all the medical groups and health systems working to make San Diego the first heart attack and stroke free zone. Liz was also instrumental in bringing the clinical pharmacist on the care team to the Right Care Initiative which won her the Michelotti Public Health Prize from the CA Pharmacy Foundation. She co-founded the TMJ Society of California, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to bringing about changes in health care practices and laws to improve treatment for TMJ sufferers. Liz has been the catalyst within the chronic disease community working with the California administration’s health policy division on health care reform, including implementation of prevention, wellness and coordination of care. In 2013 she was elected to the board of directors to the California Healthcare Performance Information System (CHPI) representing California’s consumers.

AACU Distinguished Leadership Award Presentation Friday, September 19, 2014 6:00 p.m.

The Honorable Prasad Srinivasan, MD (Hartford, CT) Connecticut House of Representatives The Honorable Prasad Srinivasan, MD, has been the president of Allergy Associates for the past 33 years. Dr. Srinivasan graduated in 1975 from Baroda Medical College, M.S. University, India. After, Dr. Srinivasan came to the United States and completed a residency in pediatrics at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he was the chief resident in his third year. He then did a two year fellowship in allergy and immunology at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. After completing the fellowship, Dr. Srinivasan joined the practice at Allergy Associates of Hartford, PC, where he has been since 1980. Dr. Srinivasan has completed his second term in the Connecticut General Assembly and represents Glastonbury the 31

st District. He is the only physician in the assembly and is the

ranking member of the Public Health Committee. He also serves on the Education and Finance Committees. He was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by Baroda Medical College Association honoring the first Indian American to serve in the State Legislature in the State of Connecticut.

The AACU Distinguished Leadership Award recognizes elected officials and executive-level appointees who support the organization’s priorities and the interests of the urologic community before state government. Recent AACU Distinguished Leadership Award Honorees:

Urology Presidents’ Forum: Best Practices to Support Organizational Growth and Effective Advocacy Saturday, September 20, 2014 8:00 a.m. – 8:45 a.m.

Richard S. Pelman, MD (Seattle, WA) President, American Association of Clinical Urologists Dr. Pelman has been a Clinical Professor of Urology with the Department of Urology, University of Washington School of Medicine, since 2000. His relationship with the department began in 1986 after establishing his private practice in Bellevue, Washington. He has served as faculty at the Seattle Veterans Hospital and Consultant to the hospital’s Spinal Cord Injury Unit. Dr. Pelman attended the University of Washington for his baccalaureate degrees in Zoology and Anthropology, as well as his Doctor of Medicine degree, graduating in 1979 from the School of Medicine. Since completing his Urology training at Boston University, he has successfully maintained a thriving private practice in Bellevue, Washington. In March of 2014, he has joined the University of Washington Department of Urology, and is practicing in their new Eastside Multispecialty Clinic. As an early advocate in men’s health, he developed the Men’s Health program for the Washington State Urology Society and is the chair of that committee. In 2009 he proposed to the American Urological Association Board of Directors the concept of an AUA Committee on Male Health. He served as Chairman of the AUA Ad Hoc Committee on Male Health until 2010, as well as having served as Course Director and Faculty for the inaugural AUA instructional course on Male Health, and subsequent courses. He is a Past-President of the Washington State Urology Society, and is also a past President-of the Northwest Urological Society. He is the current President of the AACU.

Brian S. Shaffer, MD (Portland, OR) President, Oregon Urological Society Dr. Shaffer is a board-certified urologist practicing in all aspects of adult urology. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1986 and finished his two years of general surgery and four years of urologic training at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1992. He then completed a two-year fellowship in Reconstructive Genitourinary Surgery from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1994 where he learned to apply many principles of plastic surgery to complex urologic reconstructive problems. He joined Urologic Consultants in July 1994. He is the current President of the Oregon Urological Society.

Arthur E. Tarantino, MD (West Hartford, CT) President, Connecticut Urology Society Dr. Tarantino is a practicing urologist at Hartford Healthcare Medical Group in Hartford, CT, and serves as vice-chair of the department of urology at Hartford Hospital. Dr. Tarantino received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his master’s and medical degrees from the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Rochester and his urology residency at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA. Dr. Tarantino is a past president of the AACU. He currently serves as treasurer for the New England Section of the AUA, president of the Connecticut Urology Society and chair of UROPAC – Urology's Advocate on Capitol Hill.

In-District Federal Advocacy: JAC 365 Saturday, September 20, 2014 8:15 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.

Mark D. Stovsky, MD, MBA, FACS (Cleveland, OH) Vice Chair, AACU State Society Network; President-elect, AACU Dr. Stovsky serves as Science and Technology Innovation Officer at Cleveland Clinic Innovations as well as Associate Professor of Surgery (Urology) and Staff Urologist in the Cleveland Clinic Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute. Prior to joining CCF and CCF Innovations, Dr. Stovsky was an attending urologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center where he served as Director of the Men's Health and Genitourinary Stone Center and Urology Institute Quality Officer as well as Chief of the Division of Urology and Medical Director for Urology Services at UH Richmond Medical Center. Dr. Stovsky earned undergraduate and medical degrees from Northwestern University. He also holds an MBA (strategic planning) from the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh where he was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma. Dr. Stovsky completed his urology residency training at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Stovsky is President-elect of the American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU) and Treasurer of the North Central Section (NCS) of the American Urological Association (AUA). He is Past President of the Cleveland Urological Society and the Ohio Urological Society as well as a past board member of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland/Northern Ohio Medical Association. Dr. Stovsky completed the AUA Leadership Program (2012/2013 class). He has also been honored with selection to Best Doctors in America (2010 - present).

Mark T. Edney, MD, FACS (Salisbury, MD) Mid-Atlantic Section Representative, AACU Board of Directors Dr. Edney attended Dartmouth Medical School and graduated from the Urology residency at Dartmouth in 2004. He then joined Peninsula Urology Associates, a four-man independent practice in Salisbury, MD. He has served as President of Maryland Urologists for Patient Access and Care (MUPAC), Maryland's Urology coalition, since 2009. In 2010, he was appointed to the AUA's Legislative Affairs Committee and is currently the Mid-Atlantic Section Health Policy Chair and Representative to the AUA Health Policy Council. He was the Gallagher Health Policy Scholar in 2012 and currently serves as the Mid-Atlantic Section Representative to the AACU Board of Directors.

Daniel McManus (Schaumburg, IL) Community Outreach Coordinator, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-8) Dan McManus proudly serves the residents of Illinois' 8th Congressional District as Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth's Community Outreach Coordinator. Dan grew up in the Chicago area and graduated from Villanova University with a degree in polifical science. He is a veteran of numerous local, state and federal election campaigns. Dan currently resides in West Town, one of Chicago's most multi-cultural and diverse neighborhoods. Rep. Duckworth was elected to her first term in 2012, having previously served as an Assistant Secretary in the US Department of Veterans Affairs (2009 - 2011) and as Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs (2006 - 2009). Rep. Duckworth distinguished herself as a US Army helicopter pilot, including during a tour of duty in Iraq.

Noteworthy Political and Policy Developments Impacting the Practice of Medicine Saturday, September 20, 2014 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Jeffrey M. Frankel, MD (Seattle, WA) Health Policy Chair, AACU Dr. Frankel is a practicing urologist in Seattle, WA. He is the current Health Policy Chair of the AACU, an AACU State Society Network Representative, the Chair of the AUA Western Section Health Policy Committee, and a member of the AUA Health Policy Committee. He is also a member of the AUA Legislative Affairs Committee and serves on the UROPAC Board of Directors. He previously served as President of the AACU and Washington State Urology Society. Dr. Frankel attended the University of Washington Medical School, and completed his Urology training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Jeffrey E. Kaufman, MD (Santa Ana, CA) AACU Delegate, AMA House of Delegates Dr. Kaufman is a leader in new technologies that provide cutting edge choices for all areas of urologic diseases. For 30 years, Dr. Kaufman has taught, lectured, performed research and practiced urology. He is a recognized leader in his field, named by Orange Coast magazine as one of the best urologists in Orange County, and he has held numerous leadership positions throughout the urologic community. He is a past president of the AACU, a current member of the AUA Board of Directors, AACU Delegate to the AMA House of Delegates and current President-elect of the Western Section of the AUA. As a urologist, certified by the American Board of urology since 1984 and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Kaufman treats a wide range of male and female problems in children and adults.

A Eureka Moment in California – Successful and Swift Collaboration Saturday, September 20, 2014 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

David S. Benjamin, MD (Aptos, CA) President, California Urological Association Dr. Benjamin is a board-certified private practice urologist with Monterey Bay Urology Associates in Santa Cruz, California. He received his medical degree and completed his urology residency at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda California. He is chairman of the bylaws committee of the AUA Western Section and previously served on its nominating committee. He also serves on the bylaws committee of the AUA and was a member of its Young Urology Committee. He has been a longtime officer of the California Urological Association, serving for many years as its Secretary/Treasurer and is currently President of the California Urological Association.

Eugene Y. Rhee, MD, MBA (San Diego, CA) Western Section Representative, AACU Board of Directors Dr. Rhee is the Chief of Urologic Surgery at Kaiser Permanente, San Diego, California, and the 2013-2014 AUA Gallagher Health Policy Scholar. He is the immediate Past President of The California Urological Association and a Past President of The San Diego Urologic Society. He is the Section Editor for Health Policy for Urology Practice. He serves on the AUA Health Policy Committee as the Western Section AUA Health Policy Representative, the AUA Legislative Affairs Committee and the Nominations Committee of the Western Section AUA. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Clinical Urologists as its Western Section Representative. He is also Clinical Instructor of Urology at Balboa Naval Medical Center and the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Rhee is considered an international expert in the field of incontinence, urologic reconstruction and minimally invasive techniques for BPH. Dr. Rhee earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and completed his residency at the Kaiser Permanente Foundation Hospitals in Los Angeles, California. He received both his Bachelor of Science in Biology and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Emory University. He received his MBA from The Anderson School of Management at UCLA in 2008 and is a graduate of the 2009 – 2011 AUA Leadership Class.

Stuart Thompson, JD (Sacramento, CA) Associate Director, California Medical Association Stuart Thompson, JD, joined the California Medical Association (CMA) team in March 2014 as a member of CMA's Center for Government Relations. An Associate Director, Thompson comes to CMA from the law firm Miller and Owen, where he has been practicing law for the last year and a half. "I'm thrilled to be a part of the CMA team," said Thompson. "Lobbying for the House of Medicine is something I’m looking forward to, as changing times in the healthcare delivery system have never been more exciting than now." Prior to practicing law, Thompson attended UC Hastings Law School and worked for the Trust for Public Land and at the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department. Mr. Thompson graduated from Brown University with a degree in political science.

Wes Cleveland, JD (Chicago, IL) Senior Attorney, Private Sector Advocacy, American Medical Association Wes Cleveland, JD is an attorney in the American Medical Association's Private Sector Advocacy unit. Prior to joining the AMA, Mr. Cleveland served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Texas Attorney General, an attorney in the Texas Medical Association's Office of General Counsel, and in private practice in Austin, Texas, where he represented physicians, hospitals and individual and institutional health care providers. William J. Terry, MD, FACS, FAAP (Mobile, AL) Past President, Medical Association of the State of Alabama Dr. Terry was born and raised in Mobile. He attended the University of Alabama where he graduated cum laude. He received his medical degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and followed this with two years of general surgery at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Terry then returned to Birmingham where he completed three years of Urology residency and followed this with a one-year fellowship in pediatric urology at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. He is a member of the American Urological Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Association of Clinical Urologists, American College of Surgeons, Medical Society of Mobile County, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the American Medical Association. He is also a member and past president of the Alabama Urology Society. He is presently the chairman of the Alabama delegation to the AMA and has been a delegate to the AMA for the past 20 years. Dr. Terry is board certified by the American Board of Urology and has been in private practice in Mobile, AL since 1985. His areas of interest are pediatrics and general urology.

GME in the United States: A Review of State Initiatives

Paul Rockey, MD, MPH (Chicago, IL) Scholar in Residence, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Dr. Rockey is a Scholar in Residence at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Prior to joining the ACGME in 2012, he directed the Division of Graduate Medical Education (GME) at the American Medical Association (AMA) where he provided national leadership in GME and medical workforce issues for nearly a decade. After earning a medical degree from the University of Chicago and interning at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Dr. Rockey was a solo physician at Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in Montana from 1971 to 1973. After completing his internal medicine training and earning a Masters of Public Health, he was founding director of the primary care internal medicine residency program; associate professor of medicine and health services; and assistant dean, all at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1988, he became vice president for medical affairs at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA, and associate professor and associate dean of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. In 1991, Dr. Rockey joined Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine to serve for twelve years as professor of medicine and medical humanities and associate dean for clinical affairs, including responsibility for all GME programs. He is a professor emeritus at SIU and a volunteer faculty physician at Community Health (the largest free clinic in Chicago), where he continues to mentor residents. He was recently appointed Chair of the Illinois State Medical Society’s Council on Education and Health Workforce. Dr. Rockey served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army National Guard until he retired in 2001 with 25 years of service. Paul’s hobbies include golfing, biking, ice skating and spending time with his three children and six grandchildren.

Empowering Physician Assistants to Provide High-Level, Quality Care

Todd J. Doran, MS, PA-C, DFAAPA Chief of Physician Associate Division & Program Director, The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Todd Doran is currently associate professor and chief of the physician associate division and program director in the physician associate program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Previously, he was senior associate in urologic surgery in the department of urologic surgery at Vanderbilt University from 2004-2014. He’s involved in academic teaching and clinically precepting medical, physician assistant and nurse practitioner students, as well as urology residents and fellows. He holds numerous state, national and committee leadership positions involving legislative, continuing education and clinical matters related to PA practice. Mr. Doran recently was didactic faculty at Trevecca Nazarene University’s Physician Assistant Program from 2010-2012. He received his Bachelor’s in Sports Medicine from Willamette University in 1989, Master’s in Human Performance from Oregon State University in 1997, Physician Assistant from University of Washington in 1997, and will complete his doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Policy from Vanderbilt University in May 2015. He served on active duty in the US Navy from 1995-2004, with clinical assignments including family medicine, emergency medicine, addiction medicine and urology.
