HEAD COACH ANTHONY SKILES

Anthony Skiles joined the Albright Athletics staff as the Lions’ head men’s and women’s cross country coach heading into the 2013-14 school year.

In 2013, the Lion women won the Penn State-Harrisburg Invitational, placed second in other races, and earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors with an outstanding team GPA of 3.34.

Skiles, who holds a USATF Level1coachingcertificate,is also an assistant with the

men’s and women’s track programs (indoor and outdoor), where he coaches distance runners.

A local product, Skiles attended Wyomissing Area High School before graduating with a degree in history and politi-cal science from Kutztown University. He was a member of the Bloomsburg University Division II cross country team before transferring to Kutztown.

Skiles led Wyomissing to the 2004 District 3-AA cross coun-try title, later placing 26th overall at the PIAA state meet.

Skiles spent the last two years as the women’s cross country and men’s/women’s club track assistant coach at the Univer-sity of West Florida.

While at West Florida, Skiles coached men’s sprinters, women’s middle distance, women’s steeplechase and women’s cross country athletes. He coached one school recordholder,fiveAll-GulfSouthConferencerunners,andfiveAll-SoutheastRegionalperformers.

The women’s cross country squad won the Gulf South Conference in 2011 and 2012, qualifying for the NCAA championships in both seasons.

SkileswastheheadtrackandfieldcoachatArchbishopWood High School in the spring of 2011, where he coached sprinters, distance runners and jumpers.

Archbishop Wood sent three relay squads to the prestigious Penn Relays meet, set two relay school records, and had threefemalequalifiersforthePIAAstatechampionships.

Skiles was also an assistant coach for one indoor season at St. Hubert’s High School in Philadelphia, with the women winning the Philadelphia Catholic League Indoor champion-ship. He was an assistant with the Wyomissing women’s cross country team when they won the 2008 District 3 championship.

SEASON OUTLOOKSWOMEN The Albright women’s cross country team enters 2014 looking to buildoffapromisingfirstseasonwithnewheadcoachAnthonySkiles. In 2013, the Lion women placed in the top two at three different invitationals. Albright won the Penn State- Harrisburg Invite despite a DQ to the top Red and White finisher,andalsoplacedaclose second at Penn State- Abington and Lancaster Bible. The Lady Lions also excelled in the classroom, earning USTFCCCA All-Academic honors after seven of eight rostered runners maintained a GPA over 3.2. WhiletopfinisherCarolineVazzana has graduated, the Lions return juniors Tamahra Sheard and Karen Gasior along with a promising group of freshmen.

TheAlbrightmenstruggledwithnumbersinSkiles’firstseason,and did not record a team score in any 2013 competitions. Skiles is beginning to build a squad however that can look for higher individual placings this year and sustained team success in the

near future. The Lions feature returners from three different varsity sports, including sophomore Trent Thorne. Thorne was Albright’stopfinisherinfiveraces last year, and is joined bytrack&field’sMuhammadHaras and junior swimmer Mitch Cain- who has helped Albright to consecutive MAC championships in the pool. Leading the rookies is Cedar Crest freshman Chad Bom-gardner, who could place highly at collegiate meets this fall.
