Welcome to the 2014 Illinois Water Polo All State and Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. It’s been another great season. Tonight is our opportunity to honor the athletes, coaches, and Hall of Fame inductees, as they take their place in history as being the “Best of the Best”. Congratulations on a tremendous season to all our award winners as we prepare recognize them this evening.
This year, IHSA Water polo had a stabilizing year with 79 boys’ teams, and a decrease to 69 girls’ teams. This was due to funding, and the lack of qualified coaches, to take on the teams. As we wrap up our thirteenth season, we have increased the boys’ teams by 25%, and the girls’ teams by 30%, since our inception by the IHSA. Our future focus must start to turn to downstate teams coming on board for the sport to maintain healthy growth. With new schools, and new pools, being built each year along with the efforts of your Illinois Water Polo, and Midwest Water Polo boards, we are still tapping into the potential our area has with nowhere to move but up. It’s a true indication of the dedication, and efforts, that our athletes, and coaches, give each year.
At this time, I would like to take a moment to thank the following individuals for their efforts on Illinois Water Polo in putting all the details of this event together along with all the other things they do to keep Water Polo moving forward in Illinois. A very special thank you to Barry Jones for compiling the Slide Presentation for our event tonight!! Special thanks to our officers, Perry Korbakis (Vice-President), Carol Macola (Secretary), Mark Menis (Treasurer). Committee representatives are: Tim Caldwell (Communications), Eddie Prystalski (Fundraising), Andy Barry, Bill Walztoni, Jeff Wimer, Pat Bauer, and Rich Norman (Hall of Fame), Garrin Kapecki (Masters and Scholarship), Noah Himmel (Player Recognition), Perry Korbakis (Referees), and Sally Stelnicki (Banquet). Our Liaisons are Heriberto “Beto” Garcia (Chicago Park District Liaison), Tim Daniel (USWP Liaison), Barry Jones and Rick Shapiro (College Programs). Running our leagues are Rob Lindgren (Summer League) and Eddie Prystalski (Fall & Winter Leagues).
Enjoy the event this evening and make sure to check out our “NEW” web site for future events and activities with Illinois Water Polo at: www.illinoiswaterpolo.net.

PLAYERS UP FOR CONSIDERATION FOR DAVE PERRY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Colleen Barron, Fenwick High School - Colleen has played water polo for the Windy City Club since 6th grade. She was a four year varsity starter at Fenwick and on three State Championship teams. As a sophomore, she was first team All-Sectional and second team All-State. In her junior year, she was first team All-Sectional and All-State. Colleen has demonstrated good leadership skills through her motivation and strong work ethic. She had an excellent senior year and will represent the Midwest well when she heads to play water polo at Bucknell University this fall.
Megan Hofer, Victor J. Andrew High School - Megan has been involved with waterpolo since 6th grade and has been a four year varsity starter at Andrew High School. She holds the team record for the most goals and most assists in a single season. Megan is also the team’s all-time leading scorer, all-time assists leader and two-time MVP. Her hard work and determination have certainly paid off as the coaches awarded her the most votes at this year’s LWC sectional. Megan will play at Iona College next year.
Karrie Kozokar, Mundelein High School - Although she never played water polo until high school, Karrie left a successful softball career and became a varsity water polo player her freshman year! In her four years, she led the team to state tournament twice. She has been a team captain and a member of MHS’s SALT (student-athlete leadership team) for three years. She led the team in goals her during her sophomore and junior seasons. In her sophomore year, she was first team All-Sectional and third team All-State. In her junior year, she was first team All-Sectional and All-State. Karrie will be playing water polo at Indiana University this fall.
Zach Roper, Carl Sandburg High School - Throughout his four years as a member of Carl Sandburg, Zach has exhibited a competitive edge that is second to none. As a junior, he was second team All-Sectional. As a senior, Zach led his team throughout a very up and down season. His leadership and desire to win helped the team peak at the right time and win their sectional tournament to advance into the elite eight in the state tournament. Zach has demonstrated the ability to involve all of his team mates into the game and, as all top players can, make the key play when needed. Zach will be playing polo at Iona College this fall.
Tammy Stelnicki, St. Ignatius College Prep - Tammy is a four year varsity starter who has been with her team at state in every season, including the 2013 State Championship team!! This year, she was the captain of the 2014 IHSA State Runner–up team. Tammy is a two-time All-American selection, three time All-State team selection, and four time All-Sectional team selection as well as a four time All-Conference team member. As team captain, Tammy led by example and supported her teammates. Her hard work, dedication, and love of the game will serve her well at Arizona State University next fall.
In 2011, Illinois Water Polo lost a legend.
In its 2nd year, the IWP Board of Directors is proud to honor Coach Perry with the awarding of scholarships in his name. The funds awarded to each athlete are intended to help support the Illinois Water Polo athletes who aspire to continue playing in college. The award challenges players to
“Dream Big” and strive for their full potential.
