Dr. Cofer was born in Beckley, West Virginia, but grew up in Chattanooga. After obtaining his undergradu-ate degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Cofer completed his medical degree at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and then served in the U.S. Navy as a naval flight surgeon with Carrier Air Wing 15 in the Pacific Ocean. He completed his residency in general surgery at UT-COM Chattanooga and also completed a fellowship in liver and kidney transplantation at Baylor University

Medical Center in Dallas. His clinical interests focus on general and hepa-tobiliary surgery. Earlier in his career, Dr. Cofer founded the liver transplant program at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Through the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society, Dr. Cofer worked to create a community medical assistance program called “Proj-ect Access,” which provides free medical care to low-income, uninsured residents. He remains involved in the program as a volunteer. Dr. Cofer is also extremely active in the surgical education community and has served as president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery. He also serves as surgeon champion for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program at Baroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

Dr. Cofer serves as the chair of the American Board of Surgery for 2013-2014.. He currently serves as professor of surgery and surgery residency program director at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine (UT-COM) in Chattanooga. Dr. Cofer and his wife, Juanita, have two daughters: Jessica Ann and Allison Jane.

Joseph B. Cofer, MD, FACS

Dr. Fraker is Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Endocrine and Oncologic Surgery at Penn Medicine. He is also Vice Chair of the De-partment of Surgery. A surgical oncologist and endo-crine surgeon, Dr. Fraker served as a senior inves-tigator at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Frakers research efforts have focused on regional perfusion to treat melanoma and soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities and metatastic tumors of the liver. His clinical practice deals primarily with surgical oncology (including melanoma, sarcoma, liver tumors) and endocrine surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreas. His clinical research protocols include isolated limb perfusion for melanoma and sarcoma, intra arterial chemotherapy for liver tumors, photodynamic therapy for intra peritoneal disease, and lymph node mapping for melanoma and breast cancer. Dr. Fraker’s research interests include mechanism of action of tumor necrosis factor, treatment strategy targeting tumor angiogenesis, regional gene therapy, and photodynamic therapy.

Dr. Fraker maintains special interest in the treatment of primary and metastatic liver tumors by resection, radiofrequency thermal ablation, intra-arterial pump for chemotherapy; and sentinel lymph node mapping; treatment of melanoma with sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy, and isolated limb perfusion; gastrointes-tinal cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum; thyroid cancer; parathy-roid disease; pancreatic islet cell tumors;

carcinoid; adrenal tumors including laparoscopic adrenalectomy; gastroin-testinal sarcomas; use of photodynarnic therapy for treatment of intraperi-toneal malignancies (carcinomatosis and sarcomatosis, including ovarian cancer).

Dr. Fraker attended medical school at Harvard University. He completed both his internship and residency at the University of California San Fran-cisco Medical School and completed a fellowship at the National Cancer Institute.

Welcome to the Association of Women Surgeons - Virginia Chapter

The definition of success is different for every individual. Family and par-enting responsibilities are as important as academic growth for surgeons and surgeons in the making.

Our chapter mission is to provide with venues of discussion to achieve success in the professional and personal arena. We aim to support the leaders of the future, and fostering a benign work environment in surgery

Goals for the coming year:

• Promote supportive environment for women in surgical programs at all career stages

• Provide opportunities for collaboration and networking

• Stimulate discussions about successfully accomplishing goals professionally and personally

During the coming year the chapter will enhance the participation of students and residents by finding champions at each institution that can aid in achieving the goals described. We will start by having our yearly lunch during the American College of Surgeons Virginia Chapter meet-ing, and explore ideas and possibilities during this meeting for further growth.
