Thank YOU for another record setting year!

Table to Table had another record setting year thanks to you! For the first time in our history, we were able to rescue more than one and a quarter million pounds of food in a year. You are an integral part of the Table to Table team! • You are a store, restaurant, school or wholesaler who donates the whole-some food we are able to pick up; • You are one of over a hundred volunteers who go out on routes to collect and distribute the food to recipient agencies; • You are an area recipient agency who accepts the food we rescue and use it to help those in need in our community; • You support Table to Table through your generous monetary gifts.

Every one of you plays a crucial role in the success of Table to Table. You enabled us to go out virtually every day of the year to collect and distribute great food through your support. You recognize the value of the important work we do to both keep wholesome food from going to waste and support the many agencies we serve. Agencies who provide the essential social safety net for those less for-tunate in our community.

We can see the need all around us. Just open the newspaper. 10 % of Iowans are experiencing homelessness. 18,640 adults and 4,370 children in Johnson County are food insecure. Our local social service agencies have more and more people coming to them for services.

That is why your support of Table to Table is critical. The money you donate goes through Table to Table to help our recipient agencies. Every dollar we receive for our operation yields nearly thirty dollars of impact as we distribute the food we rescue. It is an incredible return on your donation dollar. Keeping wholesome food from going to waste...getting it to agencies who serve the hungry, homeless and at-risk population...making sure it reaches those who need it the most. It is the right thing to do...

Why is food rescue important?

According to Jonathon Bloom, author of “American Wasteland”, the amount of food going to waste every day in the United States would be enough fill the 90,000 seat Rose Bowl stadium. Daily. That’s 100 billion pounds of food per year!

Imagine the impact keeping this food from going to waste would have on hunger being experienced in the country. However, when you think about this massive volume of food going to waste, it can be truly daunting...

Where do you start?

The key to addressing the issue is tackling the problem by one community at a time. Each town or city doing its part to end food waste locally. Taking action where you live.

Table to Table does this in Johnson County. We are a grass roots organization formed in April 1996 to make sure wholesome, nutritious food doesn’t go to waste. We are not a food bank or pantry. The food our volunteers collect from donors is immediately distributed to area social service agencies.

How Table to Table works

Think of a bicycle wheel. On half of the rim are our donor sites like HyVee, New Pioneer Co-op, United Natural Foods, Red Lobster and the Iowa Memorial Union on campus. We have about 40 donors in all. We are connected to them much like the spokes on the wheel.

On the other rim, are the social service agencies we distribute the food to, including Shel-ter House, DVIP, Salvation Army, Crisis Center Food Bank and Ronald McDonald House. We have 34 sites we deliver to in all. Table to Table acts as the distribution hub where all the donations flow through.

Table to Table strives to be as efficient as possible. It is our responsibility to use the dollars we receive as prudently as possible. In FY14, Table to Table’s budget was $200,431. Below is the percentage breakdown by category:

The USDA considers 1.2 pounds of rescued food to be a meal. In our last fiscal year, we rescued 1,264,984 pounds of food. This is over 1,054,000 meals worth of food distributed at no charge to agencies. According to the latest “Map the Meal Gap” survey conducted by Feeding America, the value of a meal in Johnson County is $2.72. Using this number, the minimum value of this rescued food is over 2.87 million dollars. But that only reflects part of the equation. Consider the following: The value of the meal is based on the value to the person consuming it. In other words, if Table to Table only provided the food directly to individuals, the minimum meal amount holds. However, we are able to leverage the value of the food by distributing food to individuals through our recipient agencies. In doing so, every agency realizes the value per meal as well. The savings to the agencies directly impacts their budgets by allowing more dollars to go for direct services. Distributing the food in this manner, we effectively double the monetary impact from $2.87 million to $5.74 million. When this in-kind value is considered, the chart becomes:

Table to Table charges no fees whatsoever for our recipient agencies. We totally rely on outside funding to continue our mission. We are a member agency of United Way of Johnson and Wash-ington counties. We also receive funding from the Community Foundation of Johnson County, FEMA, special events and individual donations and local business support. Below is a chart of percentage of funding by category.

Table to Table wishes to extend thanks to our FY14 community sponsors:
