2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Last year, the Maryland Food Bank distributed 36.8 million meals to food-insecure individuals — an increase of nearly 10 million from the previous year. This record growth put us through the roof, and today we have a stronger statewide presence than ever before. Still, as we survey the path ahead of us, we are grounded by the need that remains unmet.

To lead the movement and nurture the belief that together we can improve the lives of

Marylanders by ending hunger.

OUR MISSION

2014 was an extraordinary year for the Maryland Food Bank. We distributed 28% more food than

the year before, averaging more than 100,000 meals a day — nearly 37 million meals in total. The

undertaking required elevated efforts at every level of the organization, and we are tremendously

proud of the work that has led us here today.

The reality, however, is that last year’s rapid growth took place in the context of the great need that

existed — and still exists — in communities all across our state. The latest statistics confirm what

we’ve already seen statewide: between stagnant wages and underemployment, the economy has left

many people behind. Today in Maryland, hunger impacts every sector of society — from working

families stretching their budgets and veterans scarcely surviving on disability, to seniors on set

incomes and children striving to make it in school.

The fact is, hunger is affecting households that were never before threatened by food insecurity. So

as our efforts to serve the vulnerable populations of Maryland expand into new communities, the

food bank’s growth has taken on a life of its own.

While we are proud to look back on an outstanding year of food distribution, that sense of pride is

accompanied with a great sense of responsibility. Here, in one of the nation’s wealthiest states, we

have the moral obligation to preserve a basic human right for our fellow Marylanders: the right to

access adequate food and nutrition.

The Maryland Food Bank leads the charge, yet there is still much work to be done.

Last year’s unprecedented growth was largely a result of new and

expanded food sources. FY ’14 marked our first year as the state’s

primary provider for The Emergency Food Assistance Program

(known as TEFAP), and we used our distribution channels to

efficiently move USDA commodities across Maryland. In just 12

months, we also grew our Farm to Food Bank network from 55 to

70 statewide farm partners. Looking ahead, we’ve set our sights for

steady growth; by 2018 we expect to have grown our overall food

distribution to approximately 55 million pounds, with produce

accounting for at least a third of that total.

The expansion of our Partner Network played a pivotal role in

last year’s growth, providing reliable access to communities in

need. In FY ’14, we channeled food through approximately 1,250

distribution partners, establishing our presence in more than

1,000 food-insecure communities and allowing us to support

more hungry families than ever before. Still our reach is limited

by geographical constraints and, while Maryland Food Bank

branches in Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore have greatly

extended our impact, we are continually working to strengthen

and expand our network of partners statewide.

Driving the Maryland Food Bank’s rapid growth in FY ’14 was an

invisible, yet incredibly powerful force: our supporters. This past

year our network of support was more diverse than ever, ranging

from powerful corporations and professional sports teams to local

businesses, working families, and students of all ages. With the

movement to end hunger rapidly gaining strength, by 2018 the

Maryland Food Bank expects to increase its philanthropic returns

by 44% to sustain our expanding impact.
