historically, mental illness has been poorly understood. it has been seen as a result of character weakness, an imbalance of bodily fluids, demonic possession and more. those afflicted were isolated, harshly treated and kept separate from mainstream society. •• people incorporated was founded on the belief that those living with mental illness could be ‘incorporated’ back into society. society itself could be incorporated into efforts to support these individuals. our name encompasses this belief, and 45 years of results proves its wisdom.

if it wasn’t for people incorporated, i’d still be in a homeless shelter or worse.

i wanted to live. i just didn’t know how to.

i work in a place that uses some of the newest approaches in client service. we focus on recovery and independence rather than trying to “fix” something.

they cared about me when i didn’t even care about myself.

incorporating vision, innovation, compassion and commitment for the success of each client.

i had no hope, no ambition, like i was in a dark, cold room by myself. then someone walked with me into the sunlight.

where i’m at in my life now, i didn’t think it was possible.

we work hard to put the person first, and that makes all of the difference in the recovery process.

incorporating vision, innovation, compassion and commitment for the success of each client.

the community-based programming that organizations like people incorporated provide is so important!

dear friends,It’s amazing what happens when a community comes together. At People Incorporated, we’re privileged to witness amazing things every day—things your generosity plays a big part in making possible.

In 2014, People Incorporated celebrated 45 years of providing community-integrated services and support for individuals living with mental illness. Over this time, the work of our skilled and dedicated staff coupled with the financial generosity of supporters like you have helped thousands of people take control of their mental illness and remain incorporated within the fabric of our community. We are all truly stronger together.

As we said goodbye to retiring CEO Tim Burkett last summer, the vitality of this organization was readily apparent. Our services are growing responsively to meet changing needs, and we’re well-positioned to continue our history of innovation. We look forward to what we’ll be able to accomplish together over the next 45 years.

Thank you for your dedication to our work!

thank you, volunteers! Spring marked the annual return of our tremendous roster of gardening and landscaping volunteers. Teams pitched in at People Incorporated locations across the metro to plant vegetable gardens, trim trees and bushes and manage painting and minor exterior repairs. In the fall, our handmade holiday greetings initiative collected more than 1,000 cards to brighten our clients’ days. (photos 1 & 2)

promoting understandingDuring 2014, People Incorporated helped to demystify mental illness to an interested public through a profile of Peer Support Specialist Albert Garcia in the Star Tribune, a feature story on Artability in MinnPost and a ‘Good Question’ feature in the wake of Robin Williams’ suicide on WCCO-TV 4 News.

changing mindsIn June, Dave Wellstone joined over 450 People Incorporated supporters to discuss his own struggle with mental illness at our Changing Minds Luncheon. And Kristin Berger, a Twin Cities mom, delivered a heartfelt and moving account of how her family was helped by our K-12 Day Treatment Program. More than $150,000 was contributed to support our work! award-winning workPeople Incorporated’s Adult Mental Health Urgent Care team was honored in 2014 as part of three different awards bestowed on the East Metro Mental Health Crisis Alliance. These recognitions included Provider of the Year from NAMI Minnesota, a Local Government Innovation Award from the UofM Humphrey School of Public Affairs and a Commissioner’s Circle of Excellence Award from the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

annual campaignTogether, we raised more than one million dollars during 2014 to support our work in the community!

tim burkett retiresOn November 6, People Incorporated stakeholders from across the Agency’s 45-year history gathered at the University Club in St. Paul to congratulate retiring CEO Tim Burkett. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman proclaimed November 6 “Tim Burkett Day” in the city in honor of Tim’s contributions to improving the lives of those living with mental illness. Earlier in the year, Mayor Coleman and HealthPartners CEO Mary Brainerd were presented the inaugural Tim Burkett Award for Community Leadership in Mental Health. (photos 6 & 7)

giving to people incorporatedGiving a gift to support our work is one of the most direct ways you can make a big impact on the lives of people with mental illnesses in our community—helping them to live independently, pursue their goals with purpose and hope, and make meaningful contributions to our society. Out of every dollar you give, 86 cents goes directly to client services—so you know your gift is used wisely.

For further information on the many ways to support our work, contact Heather Christopherson, VP of Advancement, at 651.288.3504 or [email protected]. Thank you for supporting our mission!

we believe in people incorporated’s mission and the importance of helping people with mental illness to live in their own homes in the community.
